Top Ten Tuesday: Shows I Wish Had Not Gotten Cancelled

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Shows I Wish Had Not Gotten Cancelled!

Once upon a time, I used to watch A LOT of TV. However, I am reluctant to start any new series, because I have trust issues. Why? Because networks have cancelled too many of my favorite shows. There are many that got axed right when they were picking up speed, and others eliminated without tying up loose ends. Below is a list of some of the shows Kiersten and I both wish had not been cancelled.

Kiersten's Picks
  1. The Nine Lives of Chloe King - I have a lot of feels about this show. It ended on such a cliff hanger!!! I know that this show was actually based on books, but I've heard that it was vastly different than the source material. Someday I'll actually sit down and read the movie script they released so I can find out what happens.
  2. Jane by Design - I really loved this show when it was on! Fashion is something I really like, so a show about a girl who was pretending to be an adult working in the fashion industry was so fun! And another cliff hanger ending - they find out she's a high school student in the last episode, but we never find out what happens!!! Not okay.
  3. The Carrie Diaries - This show is another one that is based a book, and I've heard it's pretty cute! (I think I definitely own this book). Like with Jane by Design, Carrie works in fashion, which is fun. I also just really liked her and the love interest. He's so great.
  4. Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 - I'm forever bitter about this show being cancelled. This show is honestly GOLD. The humor is so good. James Van Der Beek plays HIMSELF, and it's HILARIOUS. This show is on Netflix and I highly recommend checking it out. Still waiting on a revival.
  5. Sweet/Vicious - I absolutely LOVED this show! I thought the main characters were really cool and that the concept was kind of edgy. I think I've seen some YA releases from the past year or so that have a similar vibe, but that does not stop me from being angry that this show was cancelled after only one season.
Sam's Picks

  1. My So-Called Life - I love Angela and her angst, Ricky and his messy life, and even hot-mess Rayanne. You might hear this over and over again, but I really feel like this show was hitting its stride, and now I will never know if Angela and Jordan make it.
  2. Pushing Daisies - From the very first episode, I was captivated by the creativity of this show. It was fun and quirky, and had this ethereal quality about it. As a fan of Fuller's Dead Like Me series, it came as not surprise how much I loved this show.
  3. Pitch - My heart broke in half, when I heard this one was cancelled. I loved this story of a woman breaking into men's sports, and all the trials and obstacles she had to navigate.
  4. Veronica Mars - VMars was and will always be one of my favorite TV characters. Kristen Bell was perfection as this young PI, and she was not only supported by an amazing cast of character, she was given compelling storylines with whip-smart dialog.
  5. Kyle XY - I really wish we had gotten one more season or a movie wrap up, because all I am left with is NO ANSWERS! Kyle and his earthly family were fabulous, and I really miss them.

What completed series have you still not finished?

  1. I never seem to watch anything new until I'm sure there are at least two seasons to watch! So many American networks seem to cancel things after one series so I was just getting into something and bang, it was gone! Now I wait and grab cheap box sets once I'm sure there are enough episodes to enjoy! I still haven't watched finished Lost, Nikita, Lost Girl, The Following and a ton of other things!

    1. I watched all of those except Nikita - all fabulous. I think with Netflix, people have changed their viewing habits drastically. I do think, that with all the outlets for shows, they are not as fast to cancel, but I still wish for that some noticed was given to serialized shows, so they could wrap it up. For instance, though I am sad The Shadowhunters was canceled right when it started getting good, I am glad they are getting a movie special to wrap it up. I hate wondering what could have been.

  2. Jane by Design! I adored that show and was sad when it got cancelled. I loved VMars and Kyle XY too. Did you hear about VMars coming back to Hulu?? I really hope this news is true!

    1. I was a fan of Jane too. It was so fun and adorable. I can't even think about Kyle without getting grrrr-angry. I did hear about Veronica Mars. I think Bell is on board too, which makes me happy. I have to tell you, as long as Rob Thomas has stories to tell, I want them. I read both the books (fabulous) and really enjoyed the movie too.

  3. My So Called Life ❤ gone too soon. I had Alex Inc and Champions cancelled this year and thought they were both cute with lots of potential.

    1. Gone way too soon. I get that they gave it that other season, but it was never sold properly. --sigh-- I thought Alex Inc was cute, but because it was a half hour sitcom, its cancellation didn't hit me as hard as a serialized 1-hour show with season long arcs does.

  4. I have to admit I haven't seen any of these before! I don't watch a lot of series, and because I don't the ones I do end up watching are usually by recommendation. Which means they are REALLY popular and not likely to be cancelled. I can't think of a series I was in the middle of watching when it was abruptly cut off. But I can see how that would be so frustrating and sometimes even saddening :(

    1. I have just given up or only started new sitcoms, because they don't tend to have cliffhangers

  5. The only one that I seem from your list is Kyle XY. I thought it pretty good too. Timeless is one that I am really sad that got cancelled. My husband even watched it with me and liked it.

    1. I have not really invested myself in any new series, because I feel like I am a harbinger of doom for all shows. I thought Timeless looked great though

  6. I haven't thought about The Nine Lives of Chloe King in a long time, but I was sad about that show getting cancelled too! And I loved almost every show on Sam's list (except I hadn't heard of Pitch---I've never been much of a sports person).

    1. I kind of want to read the Chloe King books because I loved the show so much and would love to know what happened. Pitch was so much more than a sports show. That's why I loved it so much.

  7. I haven’t seen any of these. I’m really terrible at watching TV. I usually watch a few episodes of something and then get bored and distracted and never go back to it.

  9. I'm really wary of shows now. Even if I start something, I might not give it my full attention and commitment because in the back of my head I know someone will rip it away lol

    1. Same. I have some serious trust issues with TV, and have been reluctant to start any hour long shows, which are usually serialized

  10. It broke my heart when Pushing Daisies was cancelled. I loved that show so much. It may be my favorite show ever. Pitch and Sweet/Vicious deserved better. I was so disappointed they were cancelled.

  13. I was late to the Veronica Mars game but I totally commiserate with everyone over the loss of the show! LOVED the movie revival though! And the added two books was fun...though I still need to read the second one! Realllllly hoping Hulu can pull off a continuation/revival! I'll be subscribing to that one lickety split when that happens! *fingers crossed*

  16. I loved The Nine Lives of Chloe King and I had no idea that they had released a script! Kyle XY was such an interesting show. I hated the cliffhanger it ended on. What's worse it that I ended up watching it years later not knowing it got cancelled and that it ended on a cliffhanger. I can't even explain why I didn't bother to google articles about it before I got invested in it :/

    1. Chloe King had one fabulous season. I keep thinking I might read the books, but I am never sure how closely the shows match. I like when the networks give the shows notice that they will not be renewing, and the writers have an opportunity to wrap it up, like they are doing for Shadowhunters. Unfortunately, I watched all these shows as first-run episodes, and always kept my fingers crossed they would be renewed, but alas, my hopes were for naught.

  17. A long time ago, there was a series called Jericho that I couldn't wait to watch every week. Then they cancelled it. I watched every episode before it got cancelled. Fans resurrected it... but I never saw one of the newer episodes because I got busy and never got back into it.

    1. Jericho was good. I remember that one from its first run. Buffy and Veronica Mars were two series that were also sort of resurrected, but it was right away (they went from the WB to UPN), and I like when networks "save" a show I love. It happened with Nashville too.

  18. I never could get into The Carrie Diaries, although I loved Sex and the City back in the day. I haven't actually seen any of the others! I was super bummed when Heroes and Gossip Girl were cancelled!

    1. I thought The Carrie Diaries was adorable. I read and really liked the first book, though I never finished the second one. I was a super-fan of Heroes, but never embraced its second coming. I don't know if there was too much time between the first and second iteration or what.

  19. I've only watched My So-Called Life and Pitch, but I wholeheartedly agree with you that both of them were cancelled way too soon.

    1. Both only got one season, and that is not long enough to get a following. I wish they had been Netflix series or even on a cable network, because they give their shows a little more time to grow, normally.

  20. Loved My So Called Life! Wasn't fond of Rayanne, but maybe if the show went on she could've been redeemed? Guess we'll never know. Veronica Mars! Another favorite. I really liked the movie they put out. Wrapped things up pretty well, but I just noticed in the comments that it may start again? I wish they didn't cancel Buffy even though it was wrapped up. Spike! How could they do that?!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rayanne was a hot mess, but she served a purpose in the metamorphosis of Angela Chase. The VMars movie was great, and actually continued a lot of the things Thomas started in the books. I was ok with Buffy, because it DID get to wrap up, though, I feel like there were more stories to tell.

    1. It was such a great show. I loved the mysteries, Veronica's snark, the great characters. I was all in.

  23. Pitch was cancelled too soon and I will never be over it! I loved that show it was so good! A female athlete making it in a male sport was awesome and I'm sad just thinking about it. I agree Veronica Mars was awesome but at least it never went on too long like some shows. Sometimes take better to have a cancellation too soon than a show to get ruined. One obvious choice missing from both lists is Firefly! That show never got the chance it deserved and it was such a brilliant show.

    1. I was really disappointed that Fox didn't give Pitch its second season. It deserved better. I thought Thomas did a great job keeping Veronica Mars fresh. You had seasonal mysteries, plus a mystery each episode. It kept it moving, and I will forever love all the characters on that show. I never watched Firefly. I know it was a huge fan favorite, but it really wasn't something that caught my eye when it was on.

  26. I get so MAD when shows are cancelled before their time- especially when they end on a very rude cliffhanger. Okay, you might not know this one (no one EVER does so my fingers are crossed that you do) but AMERICAN DREAMS. It was set in the mid-late 60s, it was awesome. And my all-time most hated cancellation, Timeless. I haven't watched any of these except a few episodes of My So-Called Life, but I am so sorry they were cancelled! Love your take on this topic!!

    1. Ha! I talked about American Dreams with someone else this week. It was so good. Timeless has popped up several times this week too. It looked good, but I commitment issues when it comes to TV

  27. Two decades later and I’m still bitter about My So-Called Life. LOL Seriously though, it was a travesty that it was cancelled after one season. I can’t believe the ratings weren’t there because it was *so good.* Angela’s angst and pulling away from her mother, the relationship between the parents, Ricky (loved him and several of his episodes broke my heart), and of course Jordan Catlano! :)
