Five Star Friday: April 2020

On the first Friday of each month, I will share my five-star reads from the previous month. Fingers crossed, I have lots of books to tell you about.

April has been very, very, VERY good to me! I think this is the most 5-star books I have had yet in a single month. Maybe it's the universe trying to atone a bit for our situation. Whatever it is, I am happy to have found all these wonderful books. I read a total of 35 books and had 8 that earned a 5-star rating.

Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for:

Top Ten Tuesday: Plus Sized

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Plus Sized!

This week's topic is Books I Wish I Read as a Child. I have struggled with my weight my entire life, and was only thin and acceptable, when I adopted disordered eating strategies, which resulted in in-patient treatment. I know there were books, which featured plus sized characters, when I was younger, but they were are prevalent as they are these days. Not only is there more fat in YA, but I love that the focus of the stories isn't solely about their size. The books I list below were are all fantastic, and feature some amazing young women, who I would have loved to have "met" when I was younger. *Each are linked to review

Discussion: Does It Have to Be Heavy?

This Week’s Topic:
DOES IT HAVE TO BE HEAVY?

I make no secret of being the queen of the light and fluffy. I love books, that lean on the lighter side, but make no mistake, being lighter doesn't necessarily mean that the books are devoid of any depth.

Top Ten Tuesday: Riot Grrrls!

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Riot Grrrls!

This week we are supposed to feature book titles that would make great band names. Maybe it's because so many of my favorite bands are emo or indie, but when I was looking through my read shelf, almost every name seemed like a great band name. In fact, some of the book titles were actual band names. Then, I was thinking some reminded me of bands, Three Dark Crowns made me think Three Dog Night. Eventually I decided many of the titles would be great names for Riot Grrrl bands. Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, L7, Hole, Le Tigre, 7 Year Bitch, Bratmobile, Care Bears on Fire - loved them all. As always, I have read and enjoyed the books I am featuring, and provide a link to my reviews.

Top Ten Tuesday: Outside YA

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Outside YA!

Today, we are supposed to highlight books we don't usually feature. WLABB was started as a YA blog, and I try to stay true to the founding bloggers vision by featuring mostly YA books. But, I do read outside of YA, and I have encountered some real gems, which I want to scream about. Without further ado, here are some brilliant middle grades books I have read, in the recent past, which deserve some of my love.

Top Ten Tuesday: They Made Me Do It!

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

They Made Me Do It!

This week's topic is books I bought/borrowed because ________ (fill in the blank). I have talked about my obsession habit of searching high and low for new books, so I do feel as though I have my finger on the pulse of what's new. However, I am not always sure, if I want to commit, and read the book. Therefore, my spin on this topic is listing some books, which I was convinced to read, because of fellow book pushers. These were all wonderful, and I enjoyed them immensely. So, a big thank you for helping me decide.

#AmReading YA

I don't always find connections between the books in this feature, but I happened to read these two, almost consecutively, and found some commonalities between them. Both are male/male romances, featuring characters, who were forced out of the closet. Though Date Me, Bryson Keller was lighter than Man Up, each book dealt with the homophobia that still, unfortunately, exists, and struggles with identity.

Five Star Friday: March 2020

On the first Friday of each month, I will share my five-star reads from the previous month. Fingers crossed, I have lots of books to tell you about.

I don't know what to say about March. It was quite a month, that's for sure. I was able to finish 38 books with a whopping 5 getting the full five-star treatment. Three dealt with mental health issues, while the other two took on grief, and four were OwnVoices, which is a point of view I really appreciate.

In a Nutshell Reviews: The Summer Throwback Edition

In a Nutshell Reviews are my version of mini-reviews, because sometimes, you just want the highlights. Last week I was searching for books on the lighter side, because my life seems to be playing out like a dystopian novel. I was happy to pull both of these oldies, but goodies, from my shelves, and both were hits!
