Sundays with Sam - The Sunday Post

Sundays with Sam is a combination of Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews.

My Week in Review

Happy Sunday! I hope the week was kind to you. Mine was uneventful.

I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but part of my job is reviewing this weekly report of complaints collected at the bank the previous week to see if there are any we need to file on the brokerage side. The report is over three thousand entries, but I had the eclipse to thank for my report being a bit smaller than it was last week. No lie. Everyone was too busy watching the eclipse to complaint. The complaints on the report for that Monday was 79, the next day about 800. Amazing, right?

I found something out this week that made me kind of sad. This ad came up on Goodreads for Kobo readers, and it prompted me to check out the kindle prices. I will use my Oasis until it dies, but I am already past the average life of the device. But what I found out was that the Oasis is no more! I guess it happened last year, but Amazon discontinued it. I have zero interest in the Scribe. It's too big and I would be paying for features I don't care for in my reader. I guess when the time comes, I will just get a paperwhite. I will miss the Oasis.

Stacking the Shelves

I didn't get much this week, but I did get two of my anticipated reads. I LOVED Emma of 83rd Street, so I was really happy to be approved for the follow up. I got a widget for The Slowest Burn which was on my TBR and a book I was looking forward to reading.

Read Last Week

This was a good week. I was able to check off a few items for my reading challenges, and I had another five-star read. I really enjoyed Spencer's debut, In a New York Minute, so I expected good things from her latest release, but it was even better than I thought it would be. I fell in love with the camp setting, the focus on friendship, and a romance between two people who have been pining for each other for decades. But there was more! The main character's personal journey was a really wonderful one, and the happy tears were flowing by the end.

I am such a fan of Rosen's books, so I requested this one without reading anything about it. I was so excited to discover that she brought us back to the world of her last book, On Fire Island. I loved that characters in that book so much, and it's just such a treat to get to spend more time with them.

I am not too far into Esme Cahill, but it's good so far. I think it may have a magical element.

  1. That's so funny about the complaints!!
I think when my kindle dies (I have a voyage which was discontinued a while back) I'll be switching to a Paperwhite. I wouldn't use all the features (most of the features) of the Scribe either.

    1. I cannot get the engineer/science person out of me, and I am always looking for trends or how streamline things. That corollary of the eclipse with complaint volume made me chuckle. They higher end paperwhite is the same as the one below it, just way more memory (which I don't need) and wireless charging which is cool, but not sure it's worth the price. It has a micro USB charger now as well which I think means I will be back to one charger for my phone and kindle. This was a plus for me.

  2. Wow, that's a huge jump in complaints! 😂 I've had the Oasis for a couple of years now but I also ended up buying the Paperwhite Signature at the end of last year because my Oasis battery life was so poor. That's the only thing that I really disliked about it cos I ended up having to charge every day. I'm quite happy with the Signature though—the screen is slightly bigger than the regular Paperwhite and the battery life is amazing. The werewolf book looks interesting and I also have Whiskey Business on my TBR so I'm keen to see what you think of that one. I hope you have a great week ahead!

    1. I do have to charge mine a lot, but it wasn't like that in the beginning. That's a thing that happens with electronic devices as they get older. I think my daughter gave me my Oasis in 2015/2016, so it's been a while. Good info about the signature though

  3. I have no interest in the Scribe either but ly paperwhite doesn't always log into our (more advanced) wifi!

    1. Huh. I don't usually have an issue with the wifi at home.

  4. I don't think I would do well reading complaints, I get frustrated with complainers. Interesting that the eclipse day had such a small number. I bought myself a paperwhite last year for Christmas and like it. I like that I can read it while floating in the pool as it is supposed to be water resistant. I haven't dropped it in though. I am looking forward to reading the Rom-Commers soon. I hope you love it. Have a great week, Sam.

    1. It's better to be reading the complaints than listening to them. I feel for the reps who actually have log all these complaints. I will definitely be getting a kindle, just trying to decide if I want to get the paperwhite or the paperwhite signature.

  5. There is no more oasis!? I love my oasis!! I'm so sad. Glad you had at least 1 days of low complaints.

  6. The jump from 70 to 800 complaints is hilarious -- I'm glad you got even a tinyyy break from that. I'm sorry about Oasis as well! I miss my ereader as well, but haven't committed to getting a new one yet. I just read on the Books app on my phone for now. 😭

    1. I love that people took time out from complaining to watch the eclipse. I am so old school and like having dedicating devices for each thing. I am happy my iPod still works and whatnot.

  7. LOL that Antarctic scientist! Can you imagine having a colleague like that in the middle of nowhere?

  8. That is crazy that it went from 79 to 800! I guess you need eclipses more often!
I did not know they had discontinued the Oasis! I'm sad, too. I have one and love it. I'll have to do more research when I have to get a new one. I'll use this one until it dies as well.
You are going to love Center's book. I just know it. I am on hold at the library for Adams's book. I need it!

    1. Amazing how an event such as that kept people from complaining. Love it! So, I am not alone in not realizing the Oasis was gone. Adams' book was cute. Didn't knock me out the way The Cheat Sheet did but it was close.

  10. Yay for the eclipse! From the sound of it people have too much time on their hands to complain! I have a Paperwhite and have had one for a while. I got the waterproof one since I sometimes read in the bath, in or by a pool. With splashing kids it's a necessity! I love the sound of Seven Summer Weekends! I plan on downloading it.

    1. You would be shocked to see how many multiple complainers there are, too. The report is my least favorite part of my job. It's just endless complaints that we sort through for three days, and of the 3000+, we file maybe 4 or 5. I think the kindles are all waterproof now, no? I do believe the Oasis was the first, but I have had that one since 2015 or 2016. I forget when the kid gave it to me. I like Rosen's books so much, and Seven Summer Weekends was such a treat to all of us who shed tears reading On Fire Island.

  11. FWIW, I've really enjoyed having paperwhites over the years. I'm on my third, and I really feel like this current one is my favorite one so far. The battery life is fantastic, and I take it everywhere with me!

    1. My first Kindle was a paperwhite, and I know they are much better now. I don't mind recharging, though I had to charge my paperwhite every day too.
