Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for:
Faith: Taking Flight
Julie Murphy
Series: Faith Herbert Origin Story, #1
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Graphic Novel
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Release Date: July 7, 2020
Goodreads
From Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin', comes the first in a two-book origin story of Faith, a groundbreaking, plus-sized superhero from the Valiant Entertainment comics.

Faith Herbert is a pretty regular teen. When she's not hanging out with her two best friends, Matt and Ches, she's volunteering at the local animal shelter or obsessing over the long-running teen drama The Grove.

So far, her senior year has been spent trying to sort out her feelings for her maybe-crush Johnny and making plans to stay close to Grandma Lou after graduation. Of course, there's also that small matter of recently discovering she can fly….

When the fictional world of The Grove crashes into Faith's reality as the show relocates to her town, she can't believe it when TV heroine Dakota Ash takes a romantic interest in her.

But her fandom-fueled daydreams aren't enough to distract Faith from the fact that first animals, then people, have begun to vanish from the town. Only Faith seems able to connect the dots to a new
Why I want to read this book

Why do I want to read this? Let me list the ways:
  1. Julie Murphy wrote it. I like Murphy, and have enjoyed her books. She has impressed me with both her YA releases (Dumplin', Puddin', Ramona Blue) and her middle grade book, Dear Sweet Pea
  2. Superheroes are a hot commodity. Right now, we can all use a hero to root for.
  3. A plus-sized superhero! I was just talking about plus-sized visibility last week, and Julie Murphy is an OwnVoices author, who always gives good rep. I also don't believe we have too many books about overweight superheroes, so, YEAH!
I trust that Murphy will deliver a story that is sweet and charming, and will delight me.

Life After Juliet
Shannon Lee Alexander
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Entangled: Teen
Release Date: July 5, 2016
Goodreads
Becca Hanson was never able to make sense of the real world. When her best friend Charlotte died, she gave up on it altogether. Fortunately, Becca can count on her books to escape—to other times, other places, other people…

Until she meets Max Herrera. He’s experienced loss, too, and his gorgeous, dark eyes see Becca the way no one else in school can.

As it turns out, kissing is a lot better in real life than on a page. But love and life are a lot more complicated in the real world…and happy endings aren’t always guaranteed.
Why I want to read this book

I love, loved, LOVED Love and Other Unknown Variables, so I was excited to hear it had a companion. I went out, and bought the book, and then obviously, never read it. Aside from the fact, that I wanted to get back to this world, I also want to be with Becca as she grieves the loss of her friend. I am actually crying a bit as I remember Charlotte, so I anticipate tears, but also something wonderful for Becca.

What are you waiting on?

And I love that you are featuring "old" new books as well. I mean, we pick up a book because we're excited to read it, right? Even if it's not a new release!

    1. I paired CWW with backlog to force myself to read one backlist book a week. So far, I have stuck to it. I know there was one I set aside, but it was more a me, not the book sort of situation. My head just needed something super light.

  4. The Julie Murphy book sounds wonderful! I recently read Dumplin' and watched the Netflix movie, loved both, and am looking forward to reading more from her. I love the idea of a plus-sized superhero and I've also been saying I want to try reading some graphic novels, so this might be a good place to start. Great picks this week!

    1. That adaptation, though not exactly like the book, was fantastic! I had tears in my eyes by the end of the movie, and was all pumped up. Loved it! I have dabbled in graphic novels, recently reading Almost American Girl and I borrowed Sticks and Scones from the library (I love this series)

    1. I didn't request it, because not all the e-versions of graphic novels are user friendly. I hope, when it comes up, it has the pop up windows, because I really want to read it.

    1. Murphy is a big OwnVoices author. She writes about big girls and she wrote about a bi girl, because those are parts of who she is. I like what she brings to her stories. The insight and personal experiences make them that much better.

  16. Julie Murphy is an author that I really love as well. Faith just sounds like it is going to be fantastic and empowering. The graphic novel format is exciting as well. I hope that we both love it. :)
