Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for:
The Henna Wars
Adiba Jaigirdar
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Release Date: May 12, 2020
Goodreads
When Dimple Met Rishi meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this rom com about two teen girls with rival henna businesses.

When Nishat comes out to her parents, they say she can be anyone she wants—as long as she isn’t herself. Because Muslim girls aren’t lesbians. Nishat doesn’t want to hide who she is, but she also doesn’t want to lose her relationship with her family. And her life only gets harder once a childhood friend walks back into her life.

Flávia is beautiful and charismatic and Nishat falls for her instantly. But when a school competition invites students to create their own businesses, both Flávia and Nishat choose to do henna, even though Flávia is appropriating Nishat’s culture. Amidst sabotage and school stress, their lives get more tangled—but Nishat can’t quite get rid of her crush on Flávia, and realizes there might be more to her than she realized.
Why I want to read this book

Whoever wrote that synopsis had me at the first line. I am such a fan of Menon's WDMR books, so of course, I want more books like that. I love the rivals-turned-lovers trope too. But, there's more! These two also shared a past friendship, and it's a well known fact, that I like characters with a history. Finally, we are getting an OwnVoices perspective, which I will always whole-heartedly support.

Under Rose-Tainted Skies
Louise Gornell
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Mental Health
Publisher: Clarion Books
Release Date: July 7, 2016
Goodreads
At seventeen, Norah has accepted that the four walls of her house delineate her life. She knows that fearing everything from inland tsunamis to odd numbers is irrational, but her mind insists the world outside is too big, too dangerous. So she stays safe inside, watching others’ lives through her windows and social media feed.

But when Luke arrives on her doorstep, he doesn’t see a girl defined by medical terms and mental health. Instead, he sees a girl who is funny, smart, and brave. And Norah likes what he sees.

Their friendship turns deeper, but Norah knows Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can walk beneath the open sky. One who is unafraid of kissing. One who isn’t so screwed up. Can she let him go for his own good—or can Norah learn to see herself through Luke’s eyes?
Why I want to read this book

I put this book on my TBR back in 2016, because mental health books rank high on my favorites list. I read a lot of fantastic reviews, but I just never got around to reading it. I finished an incredible mental health book the other day, and was looking for something to pair it with. This title jumped out at me, because of the high ratings, and also, because it seems to feature a bit of romance, which I will always say yes to.

What are you waiting on?

  1. Sam the first blurb is indeed really really seducing but I confess that I would fall for the cover only! Total book cover whore here 😉

    1. Carole, I loved that book so much. There was the one harrowing part, which put me in a panic, but it was such a pleasure to read. I always like to read OwnVoices work, when it comes to mental illness too. There is not one-size-fits-all, but it's an honest and realistic depiction.

  16. I also really want to read The Henna Wars and it sounds so important but also cute. I also have Under Rose Tainted Skies on my kindle but never read it either... oops... will see what you make of both of these ^.^

    1. Rose-Tainted Skies was wonderful! Loved it so much. I was *this* close to signing up for a blog tour for The Henna Wars, but I have way too many review books for May/June. I do hope to read the book some other way, because I love the sound of it.
