Animal Crossing Gets Literary

Hello, friends! I hope you are all hanging in there during these times of self-isolation. Out here in Chicago, we've been pretty much shut down for almost two weeks now. As a home body, this time has definitely flown by for me! Especially due to the recent release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. To celebrate the new game, I've recreated some of the most iconic outfits from YA books!

Celaena Sardothien: Heir of Fire - Sarah J. Maas

Here we see that Celaena is enjoying the island life. She doesn't have a bow here, but she is still a good shot with her slingshot.

Putting together this look ended up being difficult particularly because of the intricate patterns and limited color palette in the design editor.

Lena Duchannes: Beautiful Creatures - Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

It's her 16th birthday and Lena is struggling with the dichotomy of good and evil! While the Beautiful Creatures movie wasn't particularly true to the book, I do feel it holds up as a movie on its own. Plus, the soundtrack is incredible.

In the interest of using a palette with a flesh color to simulate the neckline on Lena's dress, I had to miss out on a wider variety of gray-scale colors.

Annabeth Chase: The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan

It looks like Annabeth is waiting for seaweed brain to finish up his son of Poseidon nonsense. Maybe a game of capture the flag later?

This design was a bit ambitious since there aren't that many pixels allowed in a custom design AND the way the pixels attach can be a bit unpredictable. Overall, I think the orange color really does resemble the Camp Half-Blood t-shirt (and I guess the design vaguely resembles a winged horse).

Nina Zenik: Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo

Nina is ready for the big heist and hoping everything goes according to plan!

Obviously our friendly villagers are a bit more modest and a bit less curvy than our girl Nina, so I couldn't quite replicate the silhouette. BUT, I did make this meme using reactions (potentially a spoiler???):

Katniss Everdeen: The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen from District 12 is going to twirl for us! The Girl on Fire!

Katniss has so many great dresses throughout the series, but I decided to go with this classic. I went through many different ideas for how to do the flames, but this is the one I felt worked the best for the effect.

Hermione Granger: Harry Potter and... - J.K. Rowling

It turns out that you can still hang out inside and study all day even on an island getaway! You can find Hermione in the study pretty much at all times.

Obviously had to take a stab at a Hogwarts uniform for this series! The pleats were a bit difficult and there was no gold on the palette, but I think it ended up looking pretty good. Plus, I was able to get this meme going using reactions:

Lara Jean: To All the Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han

Last but not least, we can see Lara Jean excitedly checking her mail. There's just something so magically about a physical letter!

This one is my absolute favorite of the whole design series. This outfit worked super well since the silhouette perfectly matched one of the options for the custom design editor. I'm so obsessed with it that I've had my character wearing it ever since I finished it!

-----

I hope you've enjoyed my Animal Crossing YA book dress up! This was definitely a fun and challenging exercise, getting to know how the editor works and figuring out the styling with my currently limited wardrobe (the Able sisters haven't set up shop on my island yet). Maybe I'll make another set of bookish outfits soon!

- Kiersten

  1. What a fun and creative post! This put a big smile on my face and was a great pick me up. I'm in Southern California, and our whole state is on lockdown too. My favorite little character you created was Lara Jean. She is too cute!

  2. LOL, I don't have a clue about Animal Crossing, but these were fun (and apparently, as accurate as they could get).

Here in Italy we've been shut down for a little more than 2 weeks as well. I hope you're doing well...or coping at least!

  4. THIS IS THE BEST!!! What a wonderful use of your time in quaratine. XD I don't have a Switch, sadly, so I'm living vicariously through everyone else's Animal Crossing New Horizons experiences. Is it amazing?

    1. I really like it! I haven't played much since back on the DS but I really like it now that I have friends (and it seems like everyone on the internet) who play too

  5. Ah! I want a Switch so bad, but don't have one, so downloaded the app on my phone, and am not really impressed enough to buy a Switch and join the game. This is so cool, you make me reconsider my thought of buying one again!

    1. The phone app is really different from the Switch game! It has some similar concepts of fishing, catching bugs, and decorating your camp, but with more options/story in New Horizons

  6. Aww this is such a cute post! I love the Lara Jean character haha. I don't have a switch so I haven't gotten into Animal Crossing myself, but I've been seeing a lot of people playing it lately, especially in the book blogging community.

  8. This is a really cute idea! My boyfriend has been obsessively playing for the past several days. Not like there's much more to do anyway lol. I've just been using the time to keep up on reading/blog posts.

  9. Oh. My. Gosh. I LOVE that you did this!!! Haha! I haven't gotten Animal Crossing yet! But, I need it so bad! I'm worried that once I get it, I'll have to fight the kids for it, though! ;)

  16. These are very cool! I'll admit, I know nothing about animal crossing and don't think I'm overly inclined to learn, but I love how it's providing a lot of distraction and entertainment for people at the moment as we're all in varying degrees of social-distancing. :)

  19. I'm sort of out of the loop as far as understanding Animal Crossing lol My husband bought an Oculus Quest for Christmas and I was supposed to get the Switch but didn't get around to it. So I've been playing his games instead.

But those outfits and characters are adorable and spot on!

  20. Oh my goodness I love this post so much! I grew up playing Animal Crossing new leaf on my DS and switched over to a 3D DS just so that I could play the new version of that on there. I cannot afford a new switch at the moment but if I could I would because the game looks so amazing! I love seeing the outfits you made and they are so accurate <3

    1. We played on both the DS and Wii. I was almost setting clocks to try and play during the times of availability. I did catch every fish and bug. Kiersten did an incredible job with the outfits. She was explaining what she did, and obviously, I was awed, because I am awkward and not good at that sort of thing

  21. Oh my GOODNESS I am in love with this post and I have no idea what Animal Crossing even is really! It reminds me of my The 100 Sims and anyone who thinks along those lines is my kind of people. They look SO MUCH like their characters! You did such an amazing job, I am so impressed!!

    1. Animal Crossing is one of the best time sucks I have ever taken part in. It's a SIM type game. You make stuff, you do stuff, you make friends, you change your clothes, and whatnot. I like the freedom of it.

  22. Oh. My. Goodness. I am in LOVE with this post!! I have to show it to my kids, even though they won't get many of the bookish references. They've been all about Animal Crossing lately!!
