Can't Wait Wednesday

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for:
Chlorine Sky

Mahogany L. Browne
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Poetry
Publisher: Crown Books for Young Readers
Release Date: January 12, 2021
Goodreads
A novel-in-verse about a young girl coming-of-age and stepping out of the shadow of her former best friend. Perfect for readers of Elizabeth Acevedo and Nikki Grimes.

She looks me hard in my eyes
& my knees lock into tree trunks
My eyes don't dance like my heartbeat racing
They stare straight back hot daggers.
I remember things will never be the same.
I remember things.

With gritty and heartbreaking honesty, Mahogany L. Browne delivers a novel-in-verse about broken promises, fast rumors, and when growing up means growing apart from your best friend.
Why I want to read this book

I have been having great success with novels-in-verse and was immediately drawn to this one, when I stumbled upon it. And if you promise heartbreak, you know I want to read it even more. I also love seeing more friend break up books. If I've said it once, I've said it a million times, so many people experience this, and I think it's important to see characters go through that sort of thing too.

Frankie

Shivaun Plozza
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Publisher: Flatiron
Release Date: March 23, 2016
Goodreads
Shivaun Plozza’s debut novel, Frankie, is a genre-hopping, darkly funny novel about searching for the truth, finding yourself, and falling in love

Frankie Vega is angry. Just ask the guy whose nose she broke. Or the cop investigating the burglary she witnessed, or her cheating ex-boyfriend, or her aunt who's tired of giving second chances.

When a kid shows up claiming to be Frankie's half brother, it opens the door to a past she doesn't want to remember. And when that kid goes missing, the only person willing to help is a boy with stupidly blue eyes, a criminal record, and secrets of his own.

Frankie's search for the truth could change her life, or cost her everything.
Why I want to read this book

I won Tin Heart, also by Plozza, in a Goodreads giveaway, and I loved the book so much, I knew I had to read more of her work. Frankie had been on my TBR for a while, but I didn't actually buy it for quite a some time, and obviously, it's been sitting unread for a bit now. But, the time is now! I am so intrigued by Frankie. I really want to know why she's so angry and what happened in her past, and I anticipate this being full of feels, because Plozza is good at that.
What are you waiting on?

  5. Novels in verse actually really put me off, but I am learning they are great in audiobook form so Chlorine Sky looks good and a friendship break up in the book? Thar is a book I want to read. I’ve seen a couple of other bloggers read Frankie so I added it to my TBR but still haven’t got around to it. I hope you enjoy.

    1. I feel the narrator would have to be really good. Jason Reynolds and Elizabeth Acevedo narrated their own books in verse, and I have heard amazing things about those.

  6. Purely based on the cover I'd go with Frankie Sam!

  7. I haven't actually heard of either of these before. The first one sounds good, except for the poetry part, I don't do so well with those books unfortunately. But I'll be sure to put it on an order list for my students. Thanks for sharing, and for stopping by my Wednesday post earlier!

  8. Frankie is new to me, but it sounds cool - I love when books don't fit into a neat genre box.

  10. I have Tin Heart on my oldie stack. I love the way Books From the Backlog helps motivate me to grab one off the shelf. I've not read a novel in verse yet so I'm curious about your WoW pick.

    1. Tin Heart was so wonderful! I hope you pick it up one of these days. I joined Books from the Backlog for accountability, and I have read my pick each week. There were a lot of gems on my shelf too.

  13. Chlorine Sky sounds really good and I agree that we need more friend break up books. That's a very real thing that so can be so painful. I think having it represented in books is good so people going through it don't feel like they're the only ones.
