Sundays with Sam - The Sunday Post

Sundays with Sam is a combination of Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews.

My Week in Review

Another quiet week for me, but my co-bloggers did some cool stuff. Kiersten went to see Mean Girls the musical in DC, and Noor went to a signing event for Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart. I am pretty jealous of both of them.

Did you see the free-reads Simon Teen is featuring. Lots of great ones. I know I marked two days on my calendar, but will I be able to do read it in one day?

I saw this ad on Goodreads, I clicked it, and have been watching Zac & Mia: The Series. I really enjoyed the book, and think they did a great job adapting it (so far).

I signed up to do Top 10 of 2017. It looks like fun. Is anyone else thinking of doing it?

What I Read Last Week

I had a delightful reading week! I read my first 2018 book, and it was excellent. Down and Across set the bar pretty high for 2018, and I hope it stays there.
  • Preservation by Kate Canterbary (audiobook): Canterbary tricked us Walsh fans with the heroine. I was not expecting that! Well played, Kate.
  • So Over You by Kate Meader: I love hockey romances and was excited to find a new series through this book. Great hero, great heroine, second chance romance, and lots of soapy drama. Loved it!
  • Like a River Glorious by Rae Carson: There were a lot of really tough things to get through in this one, but I loved seeing Leah learn more about her power and the ending was so good. ★ 1/2
  • Down and Across by Arvin Ahmadi: This was such a wonderful coming of age story. I really enjoyed being in DC with Saaket as he searched for his "grit", and I will forever sing the praises of endings like this. I smiled so hard, tears fell out of my eyes. ★ 1/2
  • Here, There, Everywhere by Julia Durango, Tyler Terrones: This was such a sweet and adorable story of first love, but also about friends and family, nurturing those important relationships, living for today, and holding onto the good memories. And the ending!!! It was so precious and left me blubbering.
  • Irresistible You by Kate Meader (audiobook): Remy DuPre was an incredible hero. Gosh! I totally want my own "Cajun werewolf" now. Remy and Harper had great chemistry and the family focus was pretty special. Really a great intro book for this series, even if I read it after the second book.
  • The Sweetheart Sham by Danielle Ellison: It was fun getting to know Culler and its denizens. This was a very sweet story about first love and friendship, but also about being honest with those you love as well as with yourself. I am looking forward to reading more of the Culler residents' stories. ★ 1/2

What I Am Currently Reading

As a Kasie West fangirl, I am overjoyed to be reading her newest book, and I have to agree with some of the reviews I have seen, it seems like she is back in fine form. I was so taken with the way "the list" was constructed, and Abby is sarcastic and funny, but Cooper is making me nuts. I just started Van, so not much to say, but me + hockey romance = a good thing.

What I Plan to Read

Trying to read those last December review books. Then I can break into Jan ARCs!!! I am pretty excited to return to Juniper Falls, especially after seeing Nick raving about Breaking the Ice.

    1. I really want Kiersten to do a post on it, because one of her friends from SU is in it, and I bet she had a little different experience because of that. I hope to see the show when it opens in NYC. The West book was awesome. She's back! I loved Abby so much, and the ending was great.

    1. My reading weeks usually look good, because I don't list my DNFs, and I will DNF if I am not enjoying a book.

    1. The challenge will be reading the book in one day. Luckily, the two I want to read are available on days I am not working, so it is totally doable.

  6. Wait, there's a Mean Girls musical and I didn't know about it??

I would love to read a book a day in December, perhaps I should ask my boss for some time off! Haha!

    1. Mean Girls is on tour right now, but it will be on Broadway next year. I am thinking it will be great, because Tina Fey produced it and was really involved. The two books I want to read are available on two days that I am off (Starfish and Tash Hearts Tolstoy). I put them on my Google calendar so I don't forget.

  8. I loved So Over You, too! I got a copy of the first book Irresistible You as well, it was on sale for .99cents so I couldn't resist. May have to add the audio version. I've read and enjoyed Julie Cross so I'd like to check out Breaking the Ice. I like that Top Ten of 2017 idea! May have to jump on the bandwagon! :)

    1. I have to say, Meader writes fantastic heroes. I loved both Remy and Vadim. This is the second book in Julie Cross' Juniper Falls YA series. I liked the first one a lot, but I think this one is even better. If you have the time, you should do the top ten week. It looks fun, and I love end of the year things. The more the merrier.

  9. Ohh so glad you loved Down and Across, it is one of my most anticipated books of early 2018 for sure. I can't wait to read it :)
I'm glad you got Turtles from the library, I hope you'll enjoy it :)
    happy reading! :)

    1. Down and Across was fabulous! That is the first time I ever visited First in Line and was able to guarantee a book using my points. I usually am too late, but I happened to check the site BEFORE they sent out the notification email.

  10. I'd be jealous about the Mean Girls musical too! I'd love to see that someday. Looks like you've gotten some awesome books - I'm curious about Truly Devious!

    1. Noor really enjoyed Genuine Fraud. I have not gotten to it YET, but some day it will happen. Review for both Fraud and Turtles have been mixed, so I decided to just dive in and read it. I got it from the library, so if it disappoints, at least I didn't pay for it.

  13. Ooo Truly, Devious?! I'm so jealous. You'll have to let me know how it is! I love Maureen's books!! And yes, the ending of Down and Across was fanatic! That epilogue left me with all the feels. I was so happy with how everything ended. Thanks for bringing Top 10 of 2017 to my attention! I'm going to sign up for it now. Have a great week, Sam! :)

  14. I didn't even know there was a Mean Girls musical. I bet that was fabulous!

And wow, you had a great reading week. I only read 1 and a half books so I'm a bit envious, lol.

    1. I am so happy I mentioned Mean Girls. I want it to do well and stay open a long time when it hits Broadway. If you had a 3 - 3.5 hour daily commute, you would get a bunch of reading done too, and remember, two are audiobooks. Audiobooks have been so helpful in whittling down my TBR, because I can listen as I drive, run errands, fold laundry, etc. I am not able to listen to very complex stories; I get lost in SFF audiobooks, but I knock out my contemporary romances that way.

    1. They did a really good job with the web series. I watched 5 episodes so far, and they were great. I like that they are short, so I can watch one here and there, and it doesn't take too much time.

  16. If I could read a book in a day, I'd take advantage of Simon Teen's promotion. Alas, I don't think I can do that. But they have some really good titles too! Can't wait for Kasie West's newest. I actually just preordered it about a week ago. Hope you enjoy this upcoming week!

    1. I can do it with a contemporary, if I don't have work. Fingers crossed I can tackle Tash Hearts Tolstoy and Starfish in one day, because those are the ones I am going to try and read. I loved KWest's new book. It made me very happy.

  17. Oh, that's a really interesting promotion from SimonTeen. I tried checking it out, but it seemed like you can only read the on the PC, so I'll pass, but the idea is amazing.

Anyway, have a great week :)

  20. The Top 10 of 2017 looks like a lot of fun. I need to take a good look at my 2017 reads before signing up. I'm not sure I read enough 2017 releases to play along. I'm looking forward to Breaking the Ice - I enjoyed the first book so much. May try to pick that one up next.

    1. I struggle with top 10s, because I have so many loves, but I love doing year end things, so I'm going to try. Breaking the Ice was good. I really liked Fletcher. Man, he was complicated and stubborned, but him and Haley together was wonderful.

  21. IDK what Preservation by Kate Canterbary is about but that cover makes me not even care lol!! I'm looking that up ASAP. You've accomplished so much!! That's amazing!! I do good to read one a week these days. How awesome that you met an author!! I have yet to meet one but hope to one day!! Great post <3

    1. I love Canterbary's books. The Walshes are a fairly damaged family, but they have each other to lean on when they need to. I read during my commute, 3 -3.5 hours a day, five days a week. If my eyes felt better, I would read more. I actually have met E. Lockhart (Yallfest 2015), but that is Noor, one of my co-bloggers. I am so boring now and do nothing but work.
