Sloth's Choice Awards - Favorite Backlist Books of 2023

It's time to celebrate my year in books. I will be spreading my favorites throughout a bunch of categories, but these are all favorites. For more of my favorites, check out my Five Star Friday posts. Today I will be sharing.....
Favorite Backlist Books!

We all love a new release, but I have been finding so many older gems that I missed due to whatever reason. Some of these books have been languishing on my Kindle, unread, while other I sought out after finally discovering the author. Nothing like being able to binge a catalogue, am I right? Here are some of my favorite books NOT published in 2023. I actually found a LOT of these were from new-to-me authors, and I read several books from their catalogues.

  1. One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid (2016)
  2. Oona Out of Order by Magarita Montimore (2020)
  3. You, Again by Lauren Layne (2022)
  4. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen (2007)
  5. The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick (2019)
  1. The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce (2017)
  2. The Bookstore Sisters by Alice Hoffman (2022)
  3. The Measure by Nikki Erlick (2022)
  4. The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa (2021)
  5. The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane by Kelly Harms (2013)

    1. This was a heartbreaking book, but I liked where she took the story. It made sense.

  2. I am glad that you were able to get to some many backlisted books. I love exploring older books. There are so many gems out there to read that seem to get forgotten.

  3. Several of my favorites weren't published in 2023 either. I enjoyed Love Spells as well, and it's my first experience reading Hoffman.

    1. I don't know Love Spells, but Bookstore Sisters was an incredible short story. I wished it was a full length book

  5. I think I read... three backlist books this year? How sad is that? And none of them was above a 4 star. So can I say "none"? I'm gonna hah. Glad you found a lot of good ones here though!

    1. Oh, no! That's so sad. Though, I understand you have less time for backlist with all you have on your plate right now. I have gotten really lucky finding a new to me author and then diving into the backlist.

  6. I read One True Loves this year and loved it. I will read more of her backlist, but her newer books are not for me.

    1. That book was so emotional. I wasn't sure if I would be ok but was very happy with the choices TJR made for these characters. My first TJR was recent, Carrie Soto, and it was amazing.

    1. It was emotional, for sure, but it was done well, and I was good with how the story went.

  8. Thank you for reminding me about Oona Out of Order! I forgot I had that on my TBR but I've heard a lot of great things about it and I should probably read it soon :) Great list!
