Top Ten Tuesday: Life's a Beach

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Life's a Beach!

We recently celebrated (or mourned, in my case) the first day of summer, and when one thing I associate with summer is beach reads. Now, I am not a beach fan, but I love beach reads, or at least my idea of what a beach read should be. For me, they are books that lean towards the lighter side. They are generally fun and uplifting, and leave me with a smile on my face. Basically, I am describing the type of books I like to read all the time, but tend to be associated with those carefree summer days. The following are a list of YA books, some old, some new, which I plan to read this summer.

Blog Tour: Natalie Tan's Book of Luck & Fortune

Natalie Tan's Book of Luck & Fortune
Roselle Lim
Genre: Fiction, Magical Realism
Publisher: Berkley Books
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Goodreads
At the news of her mother's death, Natalie Tan returns home. The two women hadn't spoken since Natalie left in anger seven years ago, when her mother refused to support her chosen career as a chef. Natalie is shocked to discover the vibrant neighborhood of San Francisco's Chinatown that she remembers from her childhood is fading, with businesses failing and families moving out. She's even more surprised to learn she has inherited her grandmother's restaurant.

The neighborhood seer reads the restaurant's fortune in the leaves: Natalie must cook three recipes from her grandmother's cookbook to aid her struggling neighbors before the restaurant will succeed. Unfortunately, Natalie has no desire to help them try to turn things around--she resents the local shopkeepers for leaving her alone to take care of her agoraphobic mother when she was growing up. But with the support of a surprising new friend and a budding romance, Natalie starts to realize that maybe her neighbors really have been there for her all along.

Discussion: Required Reading

This Week’s Topic: Required Reading

Several weeks ago, Sophie was talking about assigned reading. Don't get me wrong, as a lifelong reader, I felt like this was an intrusion. How dare the teacher dictate what I was supposed to read! Believe me, I was the first to cry foul, when a new book was assigned.

Highly Anticipating - YA Releases!

This year has been packed with amazing releases, and there are a TON I am still looking forward to. I like to keep track of these lists, and so far, I have read 9/10 books from my previous YA anticipating post and 6/10 from my adult anticipating post. Today, I will be sharing ten YA releases I am looking forward to reading in the second half of this year. December is sort of slim pickings, but I do have a book, which I will feature in an upcoming Can't Wait Wednesday post.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Goodreads
A high-achieving teen who's determined to become a fighter jet pilot is matched up with an accused criminal at an elite military boarding school in this YA novel. Paige knows exactly what she wants—to graduate from Wallingford Academy and become a pilot in the US Air Force. She’s inherited her father’s no-nonsense attitude and whip-smart intelligence, all of which have made her the perfect Wallingford cadet.

Logan has spent the last five years doing as little as possible. Once a star basketball player and one of the most popular boys at school, he now spends his days playing video games. When a friend borrows his car and commits a crime, Logan takes the fall and ends up at Wallingford as part of his court order.

When Paige is asked to mentor Logan, it’s the perfect opportunity to prove her leadership skills—but she doesn't account for the feelings that start to develop or the baggage from Logan's past which could threaten her future.

Discussion: What Type of Reader Are You?

This Week’s Topic: What Type of Reader Are You?

I would say that most of you, who visit are serious readers, and we share a love for lots of different kinds of books. After reading many Top Ten Tuesday posts this past week, I started wondering about the type of reader I am. Like, if I had to commit to one type of book, what would I pick?

Unpopular Bookish Opinions!

As readers, we are very passionate about things relating to our beloved books. As a hardcore YA contemporary reader, I constantly feel alone in my likes and loves, but I have many other opinions, which are not widely shared as well.

Discussion: Book Adaptations

This Week’s Topic: Book Adaptations

YA books have been going from page to screen for quite some time now, but it seems like there have been a slew of announcements following the success of Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before. I will admit, I do not watch a great deal of TV, but if you base the movie on one of my favorite books, I will watch it.

This week, I was treated to a stupendous announcement:

Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Genre - YA Contemporary

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

My Favorite Genre - YA Contemporary!

You may have noticed that I read a LOT of contemporary novels. I read middle grades, adult, new adult, and young adult contemporaries. I am not sure whey it is my favorite genre. Maybe it's because of the wide array of topics they cover, or it could be that I am simply more comfortable reading a story that takes place in a time and space somewhat, if not wholly, familiar to me. Whatever the reason, I would love to share some YA contemporaries I enjoyed this year, which I haven't featured recently. Trying to spread the love. This was NO easy task. I shifted through over 100 YA contemporaries I read this year, and leaned towards those I felt were under appreciated. I hope you find a gem in the bunch that sparks your interest.

Blog Tour: No Place Like Here - Christina June

No Place Like Here
Christina June
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Publisher: Blink
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Goodreads
Ashlyn Zanotti has big plans for the summer. She’s just spent a year at boarding school and can’t wait to get home. But when Ashlyn’s father is arrested for tax evasion and her mother enters a rehab facility for “exhaustion,” a.k.a. depression, her life is turned upside down.

The cherry on top? Ashlyn’s father sends her to work with a cousin she doesn’t even know at a rustic team-building retreat center in the middle of nowhere. A self-proclaimed “indoor girl,” not even Ash’s habit of leaving breadcrumb quotes—inspirational sayings she scribbles everywhere—can help her cope.

With a dangerously careless camp manager doling out grunt work, an overbearing father trying to control her even from prison, and more than a little boy drama to struggle with, the summer is full of challenges. And Ashlyn must make the toughest decision of her life: keep quiet and follow her dad’s marching orders, or find the courage to finally stand up to her father to have any hope of finding her way back home.
