In this delightfully heartwarming novel, an elderly dog is determined to help his grieving owner find a reason to go on after loss. Now, if only he’d stop getting in his way by being so very . . . human.
Harold may be an aging mutt—but Amelia May, the romance novelist who adopted him, taught him a thing or two about the human heart before she died. And she also left Harold with a final to help her partner, Miguel, find love again.
Trouble is, the grief-ridden recluse rarely goes out, not even to the bookstore he and Amelia owned together. Now it’s in danger of going under, and when a renowned author doesn’t show up for his event, it pushes the store’s already precarious finances into the red. In a final attempt to save the bookstore, Miguel and Harold set out to find the no-show and insist he fulfill his obligation. But instead, they’re greeted by Fiona, his sunny yet secretive sister.
Fiona is intent on protecting her brother’s privacy—and to Harold’s horror, she doesn’t like dogs. But her precocious eleven-year-old daughter, who's also named Amelia, immediately befriends Harold . . . who can’t help but wonder if his Amelia was right when she said there are no coincidences in life.
Harold’s quickly running out of time to accomplish his mission, but if he can just convince his infuriatingly stubborn person to let Fiona in, he’s certain Miguel will find something far more important than a missing his own happy ending.
Uplifting, smartly observed, and hilariously insightful, Dog Person is as undeniably charming as its beloved narrator, Harold, and offers a much-needed reminder that while not all love is unconditional, it is still always worthwhile.
Harold was lucky to have been rescued by Amelia over a decade ago and enjoyed a wonderful life with her and her mate, Miguel. It had been six seasons since they lost Amelia, and Harold knows he is running out of time to fulfill her final wish - to help Miguel find love again. When fate steps in and brings Fiona into their lives, Harold is determined to see those two fall in love.
This was such a sweet and heartwarming story told from the point of view of an aging dog. Harold was a doll, and I adored all his thoughts, random and on task. We all know, in our hearts, that our pets understand us, so it was fun to hear everything from Harold's perspective. I loved that Harold had a partner in crime in Fiona's tween daughter. The dynamic between those two was fantastic and brought many smiles to my face as they worked their matchmaking magic.
I feel like this book will definitely appeal the dog lovers out there, but there is also a LOT of book love as well. A big part of this story was a plan to save the bookstore (don't bookstores always need to be saved?). The bookstore was Amelia's dream, and Miguel, consumed by grief, sort of let things go there. But I had faith in Miguel, Harold, and the staff of the bookshop. They had great energy and a love of books to power them through.
I have to admit that I shed quite a few tears, and I did appreciate this story of love, loss, friendship, community, and grief. It was a touching tale packed with humor and warmth which tugged at my heartstrings.

What if everyone in the world found out who their soulmates are at the same time?
Olivia Adler’s life is a behind-the-scenes job she loves in a bustling newsroom, an engagement to golden-boy Wells, and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to create the documentary she’s always wanted to make.
Then one sleepless night, everything unravels. One message on Wells’s phone shatters her engagement. A second message—an anonymous global email quickly dubbed Soulmail—shakes the world.
Delivered to every individual’s inbox, Soulmail reveals the name and birthdate of your soulmate. Suddenly, love as we know it is rewritten overnight…and Olivia accidentally becomes the face of it all when she reports on the story live and goes viral.
With millions watching her every move, Olivia resolutely refuses to open her Soulmail. She’s not ready for fate to make her choices—especially not now. But when she crosses paths with her childhood best friend—the boy she loved and lost—everything she thought she knew about destiny, timing, and love comes into question.
Is true love written in the stars…or something we choose for ourselves?
What would you do if you received an anonymous email telling you who your soulmate was? That's the question everyone in this world asked themselves when they found soulmail in their inbox.
This tale was told from the perspective of Olivia who was propelled from behind the scenes to in front of the camera when her last minute hosting gig coincided with the soulmail drop. This instant fame accompanied discovering her fiancé was having an affair. While her personal and professional worlds were changing, so was the world at large. The soulmate emails were infiltrating all areas of life, and it became Olivia's job to report on it.
The concept of this book reminded me of several I have read, most notably, The Measure. Your Soulmail Is Attached was lighter as pondering the idea of a soulmate is not as heavy as how long you will live, but it was interesting to think about how people dealt with access to this information. Did they want to know? How would it affect their current relationships? What would be considered a soulmate? How would dating and marriage change? I thought Smith did a great job looking at this from all different angles. This made up most of the first part of the book.
I felt like the book switched gears at one point and began to focus more on Olivia. The story felt a little different. Not bad, just different. Olivia found herself in quite a situation, and she had many big decisions to make. There were aspects that made things difficult for her, but I was crossing my fingers that she would make the right choices all along.
Overall: Your Soulmail Is Attached was an interesting and thought provoking exploration of the idea of soulmates and how knowing this information could affect one's life.
