Your Own Worst Enemy

Release Date: November 13, 2018

Three candidates, three platforms, and a whirlwind of social media, gaffes, and protests makes for a ridiculous and hilarious political circus in Gordon Jack’s second highly satirical novel. Perfect for fans of Andrew Smith and Frank Portman. They say that with great power comes great responsibility. Unless you’re student body president at Lincoln High School. Then you get all the responsibility but none of the power. And the three candidates running for president know all about that.

Stacey Wynn is the front-runner, but she didn’t count on Julia Romero entering this race. Julia is challenging Stacey for the title while also putting the moves on Stacey’s campaign adviser and only friend, Brian. And then there is Tony Guo, the way outsider. Tony is usually oblivious to the school’s political campaigning, as he’s oblivious to anything that isn’t about getting high and drinking all the Space Cow chocolate milk he can stomach. But when his favorite beverage is banned at school, a freshman political “mastermind” convinces Tony to become the voice of the little guy. But what kind of voice is that, really?

If this were an ordinary high school election, the winner would be whichever candidate was the most popular. But this year, each candidate may have to sink to a new low to win an election that could change the course of...very little.
I know you're thinking, "Sam! You hate politics!", and this is true. However, when it comes to books, I only get perturbed when the author sneaks politics into a book, which is NOT about politics. This is clearly a work of political satire, and I am therefore mentally prepared for it.

And you know, satire is usually funny. Many early reviewers are likening this story to the movie Election, which was absolutely hilarious. And, like, lampooning politics is pretty alright with me, as long as they keep it fictional.

Based on the synopsis and reviews I have read, I feel as though I could enjoy this book.

What are you waiting on?

    1. This sounds more satirical and more geared towards teen issues, so I am hopeful it turns out that way

  3. That cover is super cute, and after the nonsense going down over here in Australia, I would like the right person to get elected to something lol

    1. That movie was hysterical. Witherspoon was amazing. I just think politics are out of control these days. The effort and money people are putting into hate campaigns could be put to such better use, and as a moderate, I feel alone in this world. 😆

    1. My thoughts exactly. I am certain there will be something of contemporary politics in there, but I feel like it will be fleeting and will focus more on the funny.

    1. I cannot really think of one, where it was the main focus, but it played a big role in the second Aurora Skye book.

  18. I like this separating of politics and political satire. However, I love both of those, and this book sounds like a lot of fun! I love how Tom is a character who decides to run because his favourite drink is banned xD I'm so rooting for him :P

    1. I like the fun side of it. The real side is riddled with distorted stories and half truths and way too much bias.

    1. If this is Strohm-funny, then it will be fabulous. I have not read the authors previous work, but reviews keep saying funny, and I love funny.
