Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.
This week I can't wait for
Three Days in June by Anne Tyler

A new Anne Tyler novel destined to be an instant classic: a socially awkward mother of the bride navigates the days before and after her daughter's wedding.
Gail Baines is having a bad day. To start, she loses her job—or quits, depending on whom you ask. Tomorrow her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and she hasn’t even been invited to the spa day organized by the mother of the groom. Then, Gail’s ex-husband, Max, arrives unannounced on her doorstep, carrying a cat, without a place to stay, and without even a suit.
But the true crisis lands when Debbie shares with her parents a secret she has just learned about her husband to be. It will not only throw the wedding into question but also stir up Gail and Max’s past.
Told with deep sensitivity and a tart sense of humor, full of the joys and heartbreaks of love and marriage and family life, Three Days in June is a triumph, and gives us the perennially bestselling, Pulitzer Prize–winning writer at the height of her powers
I had read a book a while back by Tyler and been meaning to read more. When I saw the synopsis for her upcoming release, I immediately added it to my TBR. I feel bad that the main character is having such bad luck, but I welcome the opportunity to see her rise from the rubble as I cheer her on. Comeback stories always pump me up, and this one promises to be filled with humor, joy, and heartbreak which I am a fan of.
Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance by Alison Espach
Published by Henry Holt and Co. on May 17, 2022
Age/Genres: Adult Fiction
Goodreads
For much of her life, Sally Holt has been mystified by the things her older sister, Kathy, seems to have been born knowing. Kathy has answers for all of Sally’s questions about life, about love, and about Billy Barnes, a rising senior and local basketball star who mans the concession stand at the town pool. The girls have been fascinated by Billy ever since he jumped off the roof in elementary school, but Billy has never shown much interest in them until the summer before Sally begins eighth grade. By then, their mutual infatuation with Billy is one of the few things the increasingly different sisters have in common. Sally spends much of that summer at the pool, watching in confusion and excitement as her sister falls deeper in love with Billy—until a tragedy leaves Sally’s life forever intertwined with his.
Opening in the early nineties and charting almost two decades of shared history and missed connections, Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance is both a breathtaking love story about two broken people who are unexplainably, inconveniently drawn to each other and a wryly astute coming-of-age tale brimming with unexpected moments of joy.
Espach's most recent release is getting a TON of great buzz. Obviously, there is a long wait at the library to check out The Wedding People, so I thought I would sample her backlist first. I read the synopsis and wanted to immediately know what happened. What tragedy is linking Billy and Sally to each other? I am intrigued. I also like stories that span many years where I get to know the characters and become deeply invested in their lives. I think this leans literary which can be hit or miss for me, but I believe the story will hook me.

DeleteI'm adding both of these to my TBR! The Anne Tyler book sounds like a heartwarming and funny story about family dynamics. I hope you read lots of great books this year.
ReplyDeleteI am always here for the heartwarming. Hope you get a chance to check them out.
DeleteBoth sound really good Sam!
ReplyDeleteThis is my little foray into literary fiction. Notes was good for the most part. The open ending made me nuts, and it had those vulgar moments that I find all over literary fiction.
DeleteI love stories about weddings, so Three Days in June really appeals to me!
ReplyDeleteI usually cry at the wedding too
