Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for:
Love in English

Maria E. Andreu
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Release Date: February 2, 2021
Goodreads
Sixteen-year-old Ana has just moved to New Jersey from Argentina for her Junior year of high school. She’s a poet and a lover of language—except that now, she can barely understand what’s going on around her, let alone find the words to express how she feels in the language she’s expected to speak.

All Ana wants to do is go home—until she meets Harrison, the very cute, very American boy in her math class. And then there’s her new friend Neo, the Greek boy she’s partnered up with in ESL class, who she bonds with over the 80s teen movies they are assigned to watch for class (but later keep watching together for fun), and Altagracia, her artistic and Instagram-fabulous friend, who thankfully is fluent in Spanish and able to help her settle into American high school.

But is it possible that she’s becoming too American—as her father accuses—and what does it mean when her feelings for Harrison and Neo start to change? Ana will spend her year learning that the rules of English may be confounding, but there are no rules when it comes to love.

With playful and poetic breakouts exploring the idiosyncrasies of the English language, Love in English tells a story that is simultaneously charming and romantic, while articulating a deeper story about what it means to become “American.”
Why I want to read this book

This one just called to me. The cover was adorable, the synopsis talks about 80s movies, and it's set in my home state. All of that sounds great to me. I sense a love triangle, but am hopeful it's done well or maybe doesn't last long. Regardless, I am looking forward to spending a year with Ana as she learns to navigate her new home.

The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, & June

Robin Benway
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: April 3, 2010
Goodreads
I hugged my sisters and they fit against my sides like two jigsaw pieces that would never fit anywhere else. I couldn't imagine ever letting them go again, like releasing them would be to surrender the best parts of myself.

Three sisters share a magical, unshakeable bond in this witty high-concept novel from the critically acclaimed author of Audrey, Wait! Around the time of their parents' divorce, sisters April, May, and June recover special powers from childhood--powers that come in handy navigating the hell that is high school. Powers that help them cope with the hardest year of their lives. But could they have a greater purpose?

April, the oldest and a bit of a worrier, can see the future. Middle-child May can literally disappear. And baby June reads minds--everyone's but her own. When April gets a vision of disaster, the girls come together to save the day and reconcile their strained family. They realize that no matter what happens, powers or no powers, they'll always have each other.

Because there's one thing stronger than magic: sisterhood.
Why I want to read this book

Honestly, I bought this book because Robin Benway bought it. It's that simples. After reading Far From the Tree, I actively sought out Benway's backlist, and this was one of the titles I picked up. Aside from that, this is a story about sisters, and sibling stories are always winners for me. The whole synopsis has me feeling feels and giddy with anticipation.

What are you waiting on?

  3. I haven't heard of Love in English, but I just added it to my TBR! I've had a copy of The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, & June sitting on my shelves for years. While I've been on hiatus, I've been trying to read a lot of the books I've had instead of requesting new ones - I've had good luck so far. :) Missed you!!!

    1. That's one of the things I love too. I am always on the lookout for the next great book. The Benway book was good. Different from her other books I have read, since there was special powers involved, but at its heart, it was a story about sisters and it was very sweet.

    1. This is my 4th Benway book, and it was quite different from the others because of the magical powers involved, but I liked it. It was a story about sisters and their bond.
