Review + Playlist: The Graces - Laure Eve

The Graces
Laure Eve
Series: The Graces, #1
Genre: Magical Realism, Paranormal, Young Adult
Publisher: Amulet Books
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Goodreads

Thanks to Amulet Books for the eARC I received via Netgalley!

This post is long over due, and I am ashamed of myself for waiting so long to review this glorious book.

The Graces follows River as she snakes her way into the inner circle of the Grace family. The Graces are a super beautiful, super mysterious, and super beloved family in a small town. Being the gorgeous, mystery-shrouded beings that they are, everyone in the town kind of thinks they're witches, and they don't really do much to dissuade people from thinking that because they are too gorgeous and mysterious to appease such peasant rumors. Basically, think of the Grace family kind of like how the Cullen family is introduced in Twilight (I never read the books but I've seen the movies, and that's going to have to be close enough for this comparison).

River is by no means an easy character to like - homegirl has A LOT of internalized Issues. But as soon as I realized that we never actually get to know River's real name (River is a name she decides to call herself early on in the book), I was immediately intrigued by the mysterious and unreliable nature of our narrator. It becomes very clear through the book that River will do Anything to become part of the Graces' inner circle, and she does some pretty terrible things along the way. I've seen a lot of reviews saying that River is not likable, and while she is definitely not a great person (read: she's definitely chaotic evil, which can come across as being a bad person), I kind of liked her ruthless passion - how much she was willing to do for what she wanted, what she thought she deserved. I think she's a bit of an antihero, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of her.

Then there's the Grace family. Fenrin, Thalia, and Summer are the siblings of the Grace family, the first two being twins and Summer being the younger sibling who is in River's grade. These characters had many layers to them - on the forefront, there was how much they loved being revered in their town, worshiped for being these awesome, supposedly-magical beings, but deeper, there was this yearning for connection that wasn't built from idolization. I thoroughly enjoyed as the layers were peeled back from these characters, showing a rawness in them that was so different from River.

Besides the magic of the characters themselves, there's such a magical feeling in the way the world is built in The Graces. The way that Laure Eve describes everything in the world was so enrapturing - I found myself feeling magnetized, drawn deeper and deeper into the world that she built, yearning for just a little bit more of that magic through every page. This book was chilling in a way that's similar to another book that I love: The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle.

Overall, The Graces is an absolutely captivating story of magic, mystery, and desire. There's friendship, family, romance, and so much more packed into this book, and I absolutely loved every second of it. I highly recommend this book to readers looking for something that feels eerily magical. I can't wait to see what Laure Eve has in store for The Curses!

Playlist Inspired by The Graces

I've always had a passion for making playlists (I personally think that I should have been a part of the mixtape generation because I absolutely love the idea of making mixtapes and giving them to people and yes I have definitely done that with mix CDs and playlists), but I've never made a book inspired playlist before. UNTIL NOW! While I was reading The Graces, I found that the tone of the book really inspired me and made me think of specific songs, so I decided to put together a full playlist and share it here! The playlist is as follows:

1989 Book Tag

I'm very vocal about the fact that I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan, so when Kiersten showed me this book tag (seen on Downright Dystopian, created by Reviews from a Bookworm) I knew I had to do it!

1989 Book Tag!

Welcome to New York
A Book with LGBT Themes
You can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson
John Green & David Levithan
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Amrutha mentioned this book in her section of our last Top Ten Tuesday (books that celebrate diversity) and this was the first book I read by both John Green and David Levithan (I'm like 98% sure of this so if you ever see me contradict myself about this I'm not lying I'm just wrong on one of my accounts) so it jumpstarted my love for both authors. Anyway, the writing in this book is fantastic and one of the protagonists is gay and so is the best friend of the other protag and all in all it's an excellent book that I highly recommend.

Blank Space
A Book that hit you right in the feels
(but was totally worth it)
You can tell me when it's over if the high was worth the pain
The Book Thief
Markus Zusak

Ahhhh there are so many of these!! The Book Thief is one of the most prominent though so I'm going with this one. I reviewed it almost two years ago (wow has it really been that long?? I'm due for a reread) and the haunting feeling of the book has never left me. Every time anyone mentioned the book I get all the emotions again and I can honestly say that this a book that has stayed with me since I closed it the first time and will continue to stay with me for years to come. It felt like a punch to the gut but the good kind and I implore you all to read it if you haven't already.

Blank Space
A book you hated but loved the cover
Darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream
Anatomy of a Misfit
Andrea Portes
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

The first book I thought of when I saw this prompt was this one which Amrutha and I did a double review of a while back where we both agreed that it was pretty on the outside and really really terrible on the inside. And it just made me so sad because honestly, it has such a pretty cover and and such a nice title and the actual book is just terrible and a few hundred pages of whining which honestly doesn't even make sense. Sigh, books that have nice covers but are terrible make me so sad because I honestly really frequently judge books by their covers because covers are supposed to entice you!!!! Don't entice me to a bad product!!!! Entice me to dynamic characters and fluid writing!!!!! Sigh.

Blank Space
Your latest Book Boyfriend/Girlfriend
I've got a blank space baby and I'll write your name
Harry Potter
JK Rowling
Sirius Black
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Okay, so I realize this isn't a "latest" obsession and I probably should have put one considering I'm so fickle that I have a new fictional crush every week but I really wanted to take this opportunity to discuss how in love I am with the idea of Marauders-era Sirius black. Yes, I know the books haven't given us all that much to work with in that regard but the fandom has come up with such an elaborate idea of what Marauders-era life was like and it's all pretty consistent and I'm i love with Sirius Black, we were made for each other bye.

Style
A timeless classic you love
We never go out of style
The Catcher in the Rye
J.D. Salinger

I don't even remember when I read this book but I really really fell in love with it. Sometimes when I say I say Catcher in the Rye is one of my favorite books I feel like I sound like one of those pretentious dudes who lurk in cafes and think they understand the world better than most and really resonate with Holden Caulfield because they think everyone is a phony except them but honestly I hope I don't because I just really liked the book, I liked the way it was written and narrated, and I could reread it again and again because it just stuck with me.

Out of the Woods
A book which had vivid world building
The rest of the world is black and white, but we were in screaming color
Graceling
Kristin Cashore
Graceling Realm, #1
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

While some high fantasy series like Lord of the Rings or A Song of Ice and Fire go super hardcore into world-building, I wanted to talk about Graceling because I thought Kristin Cashore did a great job integrating her story and plot progression with the world-building. In my review, I focus mostly on the characters and the writing, because the world wasn't thrown in my face and wasn't too much to handle. It flowed as a part of the story and didn't feel like a separate entity which was really nice. I'd still call it vivid though because the world created was intense -- people had Graces (skills they were exceptionally good at), and the protagonist was Graced with killing. It was so interesting to see the type of world they lived in and what the dynamic between all the different people was.

Out of the Woods
A book where things weren't exactly how they seemed
The monsters turned out to be just trees
Beatrice and Virgil
Yann Martel
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This book was interesting to say the least. I read it and reviewed it about a year and a half ago and I'd like to reread it because it's 100% one of those books where you get something different out of it each time you read it. It's also a love it or hate it book and I definitely enjoyed it. It's not exactly how it seems because the story has so many layers to it besides the simple "a man receives a letter in the mail, here is the letter." It leaves you with a strange feeling at the end, and I definitely feel like this is characteristic of Martel because the ending of Life of Pi was also a very reality-questioning one.

All You Had to Do Was Stay
A book you were eagerly anticipating, but ended up
being disappointed by
You were all I wanted, but not like this
The Kill Order
James Dashner
The Maze Runner 0.5
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Okay, just want to preface this by saying I wasn't totally disappointed, I didn't completely dislike it, I just didn't love it. I'd give it, maybe 2.5 stars out of 5? There's a chance that if I read it again my opinion could change but as of now that's where I stand but I can see how people would like it. For me, there was too much going on and I wasn't invested in any of the characters because they weren't the ones I spent three books getting attached to and I just got bored which was impressive considering that there was so much happening. I don't know, it just wasn't for me, but it was kindof cool to see how everything began though.

Shake it Off
A book/series that everyone seems to love but you can't help but hate
The haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
A Game of Thrones
George R. R. Martin
A Song of Ice and Fire, #1
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I DO NOT HATE THIS BOOK OR SERIES. I needed to write that in all caps before I started this. What I meant by putting this here is that I feel like there are so many people who I talk to about the show and they're like "yeah the book is so much more intense/so much better, you should read it!" and I think "wow I should read ASOIAF" and I have the series and I've tried to read it twice and it's just so heavy that I can't do it. I don't know what it is, because people have said that Eragon was too descriptive for them and I read that fine and LOTR is pretty high on the fantasy and I'm cool with it but this is another level and I just can't get through it and I really wish I could because I love the show but every time I start reading I think of what else I could be reading.

Shake it Off
A book/series you love that everyone else seems to hate
The haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Allegiant
Veronica Roth
Divergent, #3
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Everyone hates Allegiant and the ending of Allegiant and Veronica Roth for everything she did with Allegiant. I am one of the few people who don't share those feelings. I actually wrote a very positive review for it and looking back on that review I'm not sure everything I wrote there is still entirely consistent with how I feel now -- I still would say I perceived the book positively but I think now I'd be a little more critical about it and see a bit more of the negatives with it. In either case, I still was overall satisfied with it and with the ending, unlike most people.

I Wish You Would
A book/series you know you will always love
I wish you knew I'll never forget you as long as I live
Harry Potter
J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I know this is the basic answer but honestly, this is the book series that I'll always come back to. It's just become such a central part of my life -- I literally grew up with it, from seven years old to now. And the other day on my Timehop, I saw that it was the eight year anniversary of Deathly Hallows and it felt like the first moment all over again. And the other week I got into an argument with a friend about Snape (by the other week I mean every time we talk) and I just felt so invested in the idea of all these characters that I knew this was a series I'd hold in my heart forever.

I Wish You Would
An upcoming release you wish you could have right now
I wish you were right here right now
Lady Midnight
Cassandra Clare
The Dark Artifices, #1

I knew you were all waiting for Cassandra Clare to show up on this list and here she is. I think this is an appropriate place for her, don't you? I am absolutely dying to explore these new characters, to get to know Emma and Julian, and I am especially interested in the way the Fair Folk are involved in this book as I've always been quite interested in faeries as a general concept. I just really like the idea of a Shadowhunter series set in the same realm and era as TMI but focusing on different but slightly related characters. It's a new and refreshing way to take on the Shadowhunters while still giving us the setting we know and love (and maybe some of the in-jokes?? who knows).

Bad Blood
A character you once loved but grew to hate
Now we've got bad blood, you know it used to be mad love
The Hunger Games
Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This is like, the most unpopular opinion of them all but I'm really not a fan of Peeta? I liked him in the beginning, when he was really sweet and kind but then it just became too much and it was really annoying and his relationship with Katniss just seemed forced and incompatible to me and I just got really annoyed with him as a character. I don't know what it is, but he just got on my nerves. And while I do feel like Katniss would have gotten so much more done and so much more efficiently if she had zero boys slowing her down, obviously he was still helpful to their team, just in a really annoying way.

Bad Blood
An author you haven't forgiven for what they did to your
favorite characters/books
Did you have to do this? I was thinking you could be trusted.
Did you have to ruin what was shiny, now it's all rusted
Gone Girl
Gillian Flynn
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I will never get over the ending of Gone Girl. I will never forgive Gillian Flynn for the way it ended. This isn't even one of those situations where the fan is harassing the author like "why didn't you end the book the way I wanted you to?????" or "why did you kill off my favorite character don't you know this reading experience is all about me?????" That ending was just so wild, by literally not being as wild as the entire rest of the book. I mention how furious I am with it in my review. Honestly, the book is still excellent and one of the best books I've ever read but I'll never forgive her for doing that to me at the end.

Wildest Dreams
A book that was far too predictable
I can see the end as it begins
Tape
Steven Camden

Amrutha and I reviewed this a few months ago and I know between the two of us it's definitely mentioned how predictable this book is because it was honestly ridiculous how easy it was to know exactly what would happen. The connection between the two main characters, which we weren't told until the end, was easy to figure out from just the blurb, and if you didn't read that, then the first few pages. A few chapters in, and you understand the way he's going to try and parallel their stories and have them connect but fail really hard at it. Read our full review for a longer description of how this book was predictable and all the other ways it didn't reach our expectations, but please don't read the actual book.

Wildest Dreams
A book/series that you wish could have gone on forever
Nothing lasts forever but this is getting good now
The Infernal Devices
Cassandra Clare
The Infernal Devices
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Ugh, these books are just so good. Everything about them is so intense, the language is so beautiful and Cassandra Clare demonstrates how varied her writing can be -- the narration of The Mortal Instruments is so different from The Infernal Devices but both offer compelling stories and writing. Not only that, but her characters have such depth and are so wonderful. I fell in love with every single one of them (especially Will. I should have written him as my fictional crush, sigh. I used to have a Tumblr URL dedicated to him and everything. Double sigh). I just wish I could have kept reading forever and ever about this set of characters.

How You Get the Girl
One of your favorite books where they "got the girl"
That's how it works, that's how you get the girl
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
Jennifer E. Smith
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This was such an adorable book and I loved it so much. It was definitely one of my favorite books where they "got the girl" (well the girl "got the guy" because the girl was the protagonist) for quite a few reasons. One of them is a little strange, but it's because the book -- well most of it, including the beginning and their getting-to-know-each-other-ing -- takes place on an airplane and an airport and I really like those things so I just really liked the whole idea of this book even more because I just fell in love with the idea of sitting next to someone who could potentially be the love of your life on an airplane. Besides that, it was an excellent book and super cute and I just felt giddy when I read it so definitely a favorite romance.

This Love
A book that completely shocked you
In darkest dreams, in wildest dreams, I never dreamed of this
Gone Girl
Gillian Flynn
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I know I already used Gone Girl once and I really didn't want to do repeats but I really feel like this is the most appropriate book to put here because honestly it was such an insane and shocking book and I feel like Gillian Flynn deserves hella credit for that so she should get a section where I mention that instead of talking about how I'll never forgive her. It was just so unpredictable, the characters were so wild, something would happen and my mouth would open in shock because I would just not be expecting it.

I Know Places
A book you thought you loved but quickly came to hate
Loves a fragile little flame it could burn out
Twilight
Stephenie Meyer
Twilight, #1
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I think everyone needs to acknowledge that their Twilight phase happened, and it was real, and that we should move past it. Anyway, seventh grade was clearly a bad time, because I was really into it: Twilight merch, midnight movie premiere, getting into fights over Edward and Jacob. Oh, I was terrible. I can't tell you exactly when I came to my senses but I know it was before the second movie came out because I know I didn't see it and it was a deliberate decision, so I'm going to say I spent about a year in this phase.

I Know Places
A book you didn't want to be seen reading
Something happens when everybody finds out, see the vultures circling dark clouds

I don't have an answer for this one because when I'm reading a book it means a. I've decided to read that book or b. it's a textbook and in either case I don't have a problem being seen reading it???? If the book turns out to be bad, then it's bad, but I didn't know that going in and I'm not the one who wrote it, so if it's something I chose to read, then I'd read it in public.

Clean
When the wait between books made you forget
everything that happened
The drought was the very worst, when the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst
Partials Sequence
Dan Wells
Partials Sequence
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Okay, this one is actually my fault. The wait between the books isn't actually longer than normal books, but I read the first book a super long time ago (I reviewed it and everything) and I never ended up reading the second when it came out and in that time the third came out too???? Noor what???? I own the second one too, and I've been meaning to read it forever and I don't know why I keep picking other books over it because I loved the first one so much I thought it was amazing but I'm a terrible person and I remember the plot and especially the important things but I'm going to read a plot summary of the first book before I start the second one anyway.

Clean
A book/series you wiped from your memory
By morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean
Those Girls
Lauren Saft
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

When Kiersten reviews a book lower than both Amrutha and I (especially Amrutha though) you know something is wrong with that book. I just want to pretend I never read Those Girls, that the things that happened in that book were not things I read about. It's working out pretty well. The points of view of the three main characters are already flying out of my brain and melding into one blob -- oh wait, they were already basically the same. It's still working though, the scarring left by the book doesn't seem to be too permanent and I think I'll be okay if I never think about this book again.

Discussion: 2015 Reading Goals and Challenges

Kiersten's Goals & Challenges

As 2015 begins, I've decided to define some reading goals and challenges I'd like to complete throughout the year! I normally just read whatever whenever, but after seeing so many people posting goals and challenges, it's gotten me kind of excited to take part in some as well! Here's what I'll be up to in 2015.

 Bout of Books 12
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 5th and runs through Sunday, January 11th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 12 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team
I'm really excited to be participating in Bout of Books 12 since it will be my first read-a-thon! Also, since I'm hoping to be more active in the book community on Twitter this year, I think Bout of Books will be a nice way to transition in and meet new bookish people.

Goals are optional for Bout of Books, but I've decided to set a few small goals for myself. As far as reading goes, I'd like to finish Chaos by Sarah Fine, which I started yesterday. Finishing Chaos will also tie into one of my goals that I mention later on in this post! The other books I'd like to finish during Bout of Books are Stories from the Shadowlands by Sarah Fine, which is a collection of novellas and extra content related to the Guards of the Shadowlands series, and This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales. My mom picked up a signed copy of this for me at one of the Fierce Reads tour stops AND she also picked up a signed copy that I'll be giving away later this year! Wooooo!!! If I finish all three of these books and still have more time in the read-a-thon, I'm hoping to read either Phantom's Dance by Lesa Howard or The Lost Chalice by Anita Clenney. As for non-reading goals, I'd like to catch up on some reviews I have yet to write for books I've finished lately and stay active in the Bout of Books challenge community.

For updates on how my Bout of Books is going, check out my Twitter!

 TBR Jar
After watching Katytastic's TBR Jar video, I was inspired to take part in the challenge as well! For this version of the TBR Jar, the pieces of paper in the jar are actually categories rather than specific books. My jar will have 12 challenges in it and I'm hoping to do one each month! While I liked some of Kat's challenges, I decided to change a few to better fit my reading tastes. My challenges are as follows:

Read a completed series with more than 3 books
Catch up on an unfinished series
Read a series finale
Read a 2015 debut
Read a new-to-you author
Read a book that's free for Kindle on Amazon
Read/watch a book and its adaptation
Read a book with 500+ pages
Read a book someone else picks
Read a book that's been on your TBR for more than a year
Read an old ARC that you never got to
Read a print book that you own

I have yet to actually make said jar yet, but once I do, it's going to be awesome! I'm really excited about this because I feel like it's going to challenge me to read books I've been wanting to read but wasn't necessarily motivated to do so. I'm also hoping it'll help me read some books I already own, so that's a plus! I'll be announcing all my TBR Jar picks on my Twitter, so stay tuned!

 Other Goals
Some other reading goals I have for 2015 are in regards to series and debuts.

For series, I'd like to complete at least 8 series that I've already started. Looking through my "Read" shelf on Goodreads, I noticed a lot of open series (Also because I'm terrible at reading finales because I don't want it to be over, and, I don't know, I'm just weird like that. I think Allegiant scarred me.) Since I'm currently reading Chaos by Sarah Fine for Bout of Books, I'm already on to a good start!

For debuts, my goal this year is to read at least 5 debut novels that are released in 2015. Tomorrow, in our first Top Ten Tuesday post, I'll be talking about my top 3 anticipated debuts for 2015, but there are a ton of great debuts coming out this year to look forward to! I think it's nice to read new authors' works because sometimes I can get stuck in a rut of just reading one author over and over. You never know if you'll find a new favorite!

If you read our We're Back! post a few days ago, you'll know that We Live and Breathe Books took an unexpected hiatus at the end of last year. As I'm getting back into blogging, I'm hoping to be much more active in the community. To me, this means trying to be more social on Twitter versus just liking things as well as reading and commenting more on other blogs. I follow so many great blogs and I just don't feel like I show them enough love so this will be a great way to show that appreciation. Additionally, I'd like to review every book I read (outside of school related things) in 2015. I have so much regret over not writing reviews for books I've read, whether it was before I started blogging or just because time passed and I never got to it. There are books that I really liked and every time I want to express my enjoyment, I can't because I never wrote a review! As long as I stay on top of my reviews rather than putting them off, I think I'll be able to accomplish this.

My last goal of 2015 is to buy less books. As a Kindle reader, I am a serial one-clicker. It's a problem. I once bought an entire 8-book series because all the books were on sale as a Kindle Daily Deal. I have not read said series. (...Ok, I acknowledge the fact that I am a sad human being and I might as well set the money on fire. I'm not proud of this - I just couldn't resist the sale!) Anyway, as a Kindle reader, it's so easy to hoard books because they don't take up space in your home! Kindle Daily Deals are also so affordable that when I see a good book on there, I just have to have it. Instead of binge buying Kindle books this year, I'm going to be a lot more selective about which Kindle Deals I actually purchase (only ones I really want) and I'm going to stray away from buying ebooks that are a bit pricey unless it's a new release of a book I'm highly anticipating (ex: Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare). On top of that, I'm also going to do that whole library thing! As it turns out, there is a large selection of ebooks available through my library and reading library books is free. I like the idea of owning books (I really do. I'm the same way about having physical CDs rather than mp3 files.), but even though they don't take up any space, it really does get too pricey, especially since I'm a college student and I'm hoping to study abroad in Florence this Summer. My mom also subscribes to Kindle Unlimited, so I can read books there as well.

So those are my reading goals and challenges for 2015! In regards to my different reading challenges, I'm also going to make a challenges page to keep you updated on how I'm doing. Happy reading!

- Kiersten

Noor's Goals & Challenges

A lot of people set New Year's Resolutions. This year, I want to set New Book Resolutions and set a few goals and challenges for challenges for myself instead of reading books on a whim partially because I think it'll be fun and partially because it'll motivate me to keep blogging when I get busy. So here are some of the bookish tasks I want to accomplish:

 Bout of Books 13
Like Kiersten, I'm planning on participating in the Bout of Books read-a-thon. However, I'm currently getting up to winter break shenanigans visiting a friend in Dallas and so I'll be participating in the next one, taking place on May 11 th - May 17 th (just in time for my summer break woo).

Because this is so many months away, I haven't decided which books I'm going to read because I don't know which books I'll have read by then so I'll update you closer to the challenge about which books I'll be marathon reading! I think I'll try to aim for four books, because that's my favorite number and I think it's a nice number to go for and maybe I'll ad a fifth bonus book to try and go for as a stretch goal.

I'm really excited to do this and also, if you visit the Bout of Books blog and look at the Schedule tab, there are various challenges you can do and post about and most of them sound really interesting. I'm sure for the next read-a-thon there'll be different ones but I'm also sure they'll be just as interesting so I'm going to try to do as many of them as possible because they sound like they would enhance the experience.

 TBR Jar
This is another one that I'm doing that Kiersten already wrote about: the TBR Jar Challenge, based off Katytastic's TBR Jar video. Kiersten already explained the way it works with the categories, so here are my 12 challenges! I kept six of Kat's and added six new ones to mix it up (also I stole two of Kiersten's because I really liked them).

Read a 2015 debut novel
Read a book that someone else picks
Read a book you DNF'd/gave up on
Read a new-to-you author
Read a book that is not a novel
Read/watch a book and its adaptation
Read a book that's been on your TBR for more than a year
Read an old ARC that you never got to
Read a book you think you'll hate
Read a book solely judging it by its cover
Read a book by a close friend's favorite author
Read a book a member of WLABB reviewed that you haven't read

I'm so excited to make my jar and do this challenge because I love cute things like this and anything involving mason jars and the various projects you can do with them and this is another thing that'll motivate me not only to read consistently but to read things I might otherwise have put on the back burner so this should be great!

 The Rory Gilmore Reading List
So, I'm a huuuuuge Gilmore Girls fan. I used to come home from school every day and the first thing I'd do would be watch it on ABC Family and then I'd go upstairs and continue my life of other things. Rory Gilmore was, and continues to be, an inspiration to me. When they put the show on Netflix, I intended to marathon it as soon as I finished watching Arrow, the show I'm currently watching. Rory Gilmore loves to read. Rory Gilmore lives in a world of books. Rory Gilmore is, and there is no other word that describes her so perfectly, bae. And so, someone went and compiled a list of the 339 books that have been mentioned on the seven seasons of the show.

So, this isn't really a 2015 goal, because there's no way I'm reading all 339 books this year (although I have read some already so I have a bit of a start) but it's just a general ongoing goal in my life. Now that I have this list actively in my possession available to reference I can work on completing it at my own pace.

I created a Rory Gilmore Reading List page on my Tumblr where I'll be keeping track of my reading so if you ever want to see how I'm doing you can check there or if you want to read with me (or race me) that's where I'll be updating my list.

I really like this challenge because I can decide my own pace so when I'm swamped with work I can hold off on reading but when I don't know what to read I have a list of over 300 books to choose from, and it's based off one of my favorite shows so finishing it, however long it takes, will give me such an immense sense of accomplishment.

 Other Goals
One other goal I have for 2015 is to be more organized. I have this really bad habit of walking into a bookstore, buying an armful of books, and then sticking them in my bookshelf haphazardly (don't worry they don't get hurt) which wouldn't be the worst thing except I do this on a way-too-often basis and now my bookshelf is crowded with dozens upon dozens of books I haven't read in stacks that have no rhyme or reason to them. I should also mention that I don't have traditional bookshelves which would maybe alleviate some of the mess but I have what looks like a wood cupboard built in to my wall (it's actually pretty cool and partially why I chose the room in the house that I did) and it has three (technically four but the fourth doesn't really count) rows of shelf space that are really deep. So I can just put my piles of books everywhere and a) if I close the closet door no one will see and b) it can get messier because there's space for it. Right now it's absolutely atrocious and I have the issue of not being able to find anything and also not knowing what books I own and don't own. Sometimes when someone mentions a book, it'll be one I've heard so much about I won't remember if I bought it or I just think I did because it's so popular. So my goal is to organize my severely chaotic mess of books and maybe that way it'll help me figure out what I want to read during 2015, rather than my usual "this is at the edge of the bottom shelf and looks good" method. Also, I can figure out what books I should visit on my TBR list because half my shelf is a giant TBR list and having it out in front of me would be wise.

Another goal is to be more efficient with my reading and reviewing. When we took our surprise hiatus, for me the reason I hadn't read a book for pleasure since my review of Follow Me Through Darkness and the beginning of winter break was because I just started to get so swamped with work. It was awful, I would be writing around two papers every night on top of all the reading I had to do and the random work for my other classes. It was really stressful and of course I had other obligations as well and having time to read fell away. However, I know next semester is going to have just as much work and I don't want to fall into the college grind again and give up blogging because I do legitimately enjoy it and don't want to stop every time life catches up with me. So my goal is to be more efficient not just with blogging but with my time management skills and figure out how to make time for reading books while still doing the work I have assigned. I don't have to be reading a book every week, but I'd like to make sure I'm still actively consuming literature because the past few months were mentally brutal and taking away time to read killed me even more. Hopefully I sort myself out in 2015!

Other than that, I'd like to take this year to vary up my reading list and read lots of new and interesting books!

Best of 2014

As 2014 comes to an end, we decided to reminisce on our favorite releases this year. There have been so many great books, whether they were anticipated sequels, series endings, or new series beginnings. To celebrate these loved releases, we've decided to share our best of 2014 picks with you!

Kiersten's Picks

The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone
Adele Griffin
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This book absolutely took my breath away. I was unsure about this book going into it, but this was hands down my favorite release of 2014. Adele Griffin did an incredible job creating such a real character that I genuinely felt like our world was worse off without her. For more of my praising this book, check out my review!

Heir of Fire
Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass, #3
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I was a huge fan of both Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight (review here) and Sarah J. Maas did not disappoint with Heir of Fire (review coming soon!). This series just keeps getting better and I cannot wait to see what Sarah J. Maas has in store for us next. A must read series!

Falling Into Place
Amy Zhang
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Amy Zhang's debut, Falling Into Place, was absolutely incredible! For someone so young, Amy Zhang has impeccable insight and I loved the way she told the story. For more of my thoughts, check out my review!

Noor's Picks

City of Heavenly Fire
Cassandra Clare
The Mortal Instruments, #6
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Did you really expect this not to make the list? After investing so much time and so many tears into this series, the final installment of the Mortal Instruments just about tore me apart in the best way. While I'm not the one who reviewed it on our blog (I didn't read it the second I got it -- I know, shocking!) we do have a review up by Marlon and I think his five star rating will give you a sense of how great the ending to this series was!

Since You've Been Gone
Morgan Matson
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This book was the definition of the perfect summer read. I loved it especially more because I wasn't expecting it to be anything superb but it caught at something inside me and pulled me in and definitely became one of my favorite releases of the year and a book I'd recommend to everyone. For three doses of opinions coming at you, check out the triple review we did back in June!

Leaving Time
Jodi Picoult
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I absolutely adore Jodi Picoult books (I went through such an intense phase a few years back where the only thing I ever read were her books) and after meeting her at BEA and getting an ARC of this newest one, I wasn't disappointed. Not only was it about my favorite animal, but it was just SO well done. Amrutha and I reviewed it so check that out and see what all the fuss is about!

The Iron Trial
Holly Black & Cassandra Clare
Magisterium, #1
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I don't even want to get into how great this book was. The level of phenomenal was just astounding. Although, that's to be expected when two authors of such high caliber get together and write. Check out our triple review for gushing and incoherency.

Marlon's Picks

Blood of Olympus
Rick Riordan
The Heroes of Olympus, #5
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

While I haven't done a review for this yet (It's coming, I promise! Here's some Cover Cosmetics from Kiersten instead), I thought the Blood of Olympus was a fantastic book. It is markedly less incredible than the last two books, and there was definitely a lot more that could have been done, but the humor, the witticism, all of the Rick Riordan charm is still there and. Though it didn't win over many in the fandom, who would have liked a more "mature, unclean," ending, it was one of the only books of this year I really invested much into and it gave me back.

The Iron Trial
Holly Black & Cassandra Clare
Magisterium, #1
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Goddamn this novel was exceptional children's literature. I absolutely loved its subversive use of tropes (as you can see in the triple review) . Mostly, I was blown away by the exceptional pairing of one of the strongest world builders in YA fantasy, Cassandra Clare, and one of the most interesting storytellers, Holly Black. I can't wait for the next one!

Afterworlds
Scott Westerfeld
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I still think of this book in detail months after having read it. Westerfeld has really honed is craft and understands his field and it shows so perfectly in this book (double review here). A powerful tool for those who wish to catch a glimpse  of the world behind the books, this is a great start. AND GOD THE META!

City of Heavenly Fire
Cassandra Clare
The Mortal Instruments, #6
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Until this point, I regarded Clare's work on the Infernal Devices trilogy to be her best storytelling. I was wrong. City of Heavenly fire is a behemoth of a novel, with twists and turn, tension, some of the most hilarious lines I've ever read -- all the good stuff I could have wanted. If there's anything to say about Cassie, it's that she knows how to write a last book! (review here)

Amrutha's Picks

Sway
Kat Spears
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

Love love love this! This is probably one of the most telling, honest teenage boy-PoV novels I have ever read. Sway is unexpectedly good, filled with great writing. Go check out the review and definitely read the book!

Since You've Been Gone
Morgan Matson
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This book is so summery and perfect: it put me into the summer mindset which I desperately needed and so much appreciate. It's all about friendship and personal growth and cutesy romance and I absolutely adored it. You can read the review here!

To All The Boys I've Loved Before
Jenny Han
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

I've loved Jenny Han since I discovered her first novel, Shug, when it first came out. Her writing stuns me every time, and this book is no different. I absolutely recommend this novel, as well as everything this woman has ever written and will ever write.
