Top Ten Tuesday: Riot Grrrls!

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Riot Grrrls!

This week we are supposed to feature book titles that would make great band names. Maybe it's because so many of my favorite bands are emo or indie, but when I was looking through my read shelf, almost every name seemed like a great band name. In fact, some of the book titles were actual band names. Then, I was thinking some reminded me of bands, Three Dark Crowns made me think Three Dog Night. Eventually I decided many of the titles would be great names for Riot Grrrl bands. Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, L7, Hole, Le Tigre, 7 Year Bitch, Bratmobile, Care Bears on Fire - loved them all. As always, I have read and enjoyed the books I am featuring, and provide a link to my reviews.
  • Jane Anonymous by Laurie Faria Stolarz - The movement was about female empowerment. To me, this is like serving notice, that women will NOT be anonymous.
  • Between the Notes by Sharon Huss Roat - Notes make me think of music, which makes me think this would be a good band name. It's that straight forward.
  • Breathe, Annie, Breathe by Miranda Kenneally - This title reminded me of the band, Dance Gavin Dance, and therefore, I thought it would be a good band name.
  • Our Wayward Fate by Gloria Chao - Not so specific to a female centric band, but it screams band name to me.
  •  Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes - This pumps me up. Like, we are her, and it's us against the universe, you know?
  • Beautiful Mess by Claire Christian - I just kept picturing Courtney Love coming unhinged, when I saw Hole at Lollapalooza about a year after Kurt Cobain's death.
  • All the Bad Apples by Moïra Fowley-Doyle - Maybe not Riot Grrrl specifically, but I could imagine a punk band with this name, which falls in line with the spirit and feel of the music.
  • Ordinary Girls by Blair Thornburgh - Another one, inferring that these girls are anything BUT ordinary.
  • We Are the Perfect Girl by Ariel Kaplan - I like the idea of this, because, to me, it means all of us are the perfect girl.
  • Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake - This just jumped out at me as a great name for a band, and by containing the word "girl" it qualified even more for this list.

Favorite band?

  1. Girl Against the Universe is an excellent band name. I would totally listen to them, would expect lots of brilliant feminist tunes. And I love All The Bad Apples as a band name as well. I could definitely see it as a punk band.

  4. We've talked about this before, but, despite being the same age, our music tastes are so, so different. LOL I think I only recognized two of the band names you mentioned up top (Hole and Bikini Kill - but I couldn't name a single song haha). I love how you went with a whole theme within a theme. Jane Anonymous is the one that screams band name to me. I can so see it being a real band.

    1. From the tunes you post on Sundays, you seem to lean pop/nuwave-ish? I was more punk/emo/grunge/alternative. I think Hole was pretty big, because of the one degree of separation from Kurt Cobain, but Bikini Kill wasn't, so gold star for knowing them.

    2. Yep, that's exactly right. I was into a lot of British pop/new wave bands. All thru the 80's. And when the 90's came with all the grunge and emo stuff... I just checked out completely. LOL

    3. I like British alt rock aka modern rock (DM, the Cure, etc). There were some great singer-songwriters in the 90s. I was into a lot of indie stuff then, and well, I am emo for life, and I passed that gene on to my kid

  8. I like All the Bad Apples! I think the ingredients to a good title are probably pretty similar to those of a good band name.

    1. Agreed. Something sort of catchy and not too long, though some defy the length thing.

  10. I LOVE what everyone is coming up with. Book titles sort of lend themselves to good band names.

Our Wayward Fate and All the Bad Apples stand out but I love them all.

  14. I like Jane Anonymous a lot, and Our Wayward Fate is nice too. I was scrolling through the comments and saw you and Tanya above talking bands- yeah I love how diverse previous decades were musically, in a lot of ways. And so many cool band names! Bikini Kill is a good one. :)

    1. I think every decade is diverse, even if it's not playing out in the media. Those genres and sub-genres don't go away, you just have to look harder. I used to subscribe to music magazines, and CMJ would send a disc each month. I loved it, because I found so many awesome bands that way. I guess the kids troll YouTube now?

  16. Wow, you're right - these would ALL make great band names! I haven't read any of them, but some of them intrigue me just because of the title. Amazing what a great title can do.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Every book up there rated 4.5 - 5 stars for me. They were all so good. I am surprised you have not read any of them, though, because you read quite a bit of YA.

    1. This topic had me thinking of the evolution of band names too. How once upon a time, the names were pretty simple The + some noun or the person's name, and now, we have band names that could be book titles and vice versa.

  19. Beautiful Mess is my favorite from your list but you are right. I had a hard time narrowing it down!

  20. Care Bears on Fire is such a brilliant name! Sort of like demonic care bears or something!
