Top Ten Tuesday: My Favorite Genre - YA Contemporary

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

My Favorite Genre - YA Contemporary!

You may have noticed that I read a LOT of contemporary novels. I read middle grades, adult, new adult, and young adult contemporaries. I am not sure whey it is my favorite genre. Maybe it's because of the wide array of topics they cover, or it could be that I am simply more comfortable reading a story that takes place in a time and space somewhat, if not wholly, familiar to me. Whatever the reason, I would love to share some YA contemporaries I enjoyed this year, which I haven't featured recently. Trying to spread the love. This was NO easy task. I shifted through over 100 YA contemporaries I read this year, and leaned towards those I felt were under appreciated. I hope you find a gem in the bunch that sparks your interest.

What is a recent YA contemporary
you want to scream about?

  6. I have There’s Something About Sweetie on hold at the library now. From all the reviews I’ve read Sweetie just sounds like a character that I want to read about. And one who could be super relatable.

    1. Sweetie was a great addition to the YA field. Her whole story wasn't utterly unique, but her perspective was something different. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. That book broke me. It's odd I rated it so high, because I am all about the endings going my way, but Solomon kept it hopeful and I was able to understand what she was doing there. Still would have liked it to have gone down a little differently.

  9. I want to read all of these! Especially I want to be where you are as I think it has a dance theme which I love. Our Year of Maybe looks so good too.

    1. I Wanna Be Where You Are was fabulous. I adored Chloe, and I was rooting for her to get her mojo back. Solomon writes the most gut wrenching books, and they are so good. Lots of tears when I read her books.

  12. A few years ago, I would have been familiar with every book up there, these days not so much as I don’t read as much YA. I do have the Sweetie book on hold at the library as I enjoyed Rishi and Dimple and I am reading great reviews for that one. I will have to research some of the books up there!

    1. I think more people should be screaming about both Solomon's books. I shed many tears, but thought they were both fantastic. Zentner will always be a must-read for me. I adore his books. Wild & Crooked was on my radar, as well as TBWSH. Both sound great.

  17. I discovered YA contemporaries through blogging and have read some lovely books I never would have experienced- so I can appreciate why it's your favorite genre. And if I ever needs recs I will come to you haha because you seem to always pick out great sounding books. Several of these have me curious enough to go check em out on Goodreads.

  20. I absolutely love Tin Heart as well, one of my favourites but Goodbye Perfect had me wanting to tear my hair out at times. Just the main character who just refused to make mature choices and her lack of actual conversation with adults was so incredibly hard to read. I really like Sara Barnard as an author but that one really irritated me. I love contemporaries too and can't wait to check the rest of these out Sam, thanks for the recommendations!

    1. Tin Heart had me from the very first page (and had me singing Meat is Murder for about a week). I didn't necessarily agree with the choices Eden made, but I thought she grew a lot, and all the family interactions and those with her boyfriend were done so well.

  24. I have read a lot more contemporary romances because of you! And romance in general. I also have quite a few of them on my tbr pile both real and virtual :D I love that you love it so much. I really like Sara Barnard and cannot wait to try Sandhya Menon's writing as well as Love from A-Z.

    1. Sara Barnard absolutely writes stories I enjoy. I was lucky enough to win her last book via a Twitter giveaway, because I don't think it is going to be released in the US. Menon's and Ali's books have all been solid for me too

  25. I have Our Year of Maybe as a pre-order for the swag as I thought it was adorable and this one is on my nightstand. My surgery is in Aug as I have 3 week off of university and I will be hopefully reading and watching TV most of the time! =)
