Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I can't wait for:
All the Bad Apples
Moïra Fowley-Doyle
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Mystery
Publisher: Kathy Dawson Books
Release Date: August 27, 2019
Goodreads
The day after the funeral all our mourning clothes hung out on the line like sleeping bats. 'This will be really embarrassing,' I kept saying to my family, 'when she shows up at the door in a week or two.'

When Deena's wild and mysterious sister Mandy disappears - presumed dead - her family are heartbroken. But Mandy has always been troubled. It's just another bad thing to happen to Deena's family. Only Deena refuses to believe it's true.

And then the letters start arriving. Letters from Mandy, claiming that their family's blighted history is not just bad luck or bad decisions - but a curse, handed down through the generations. Mandy has gone in search of the curse's roots, and now Deena must find her. What they find will heal their family's rotten past - or rip it apart forever.
Why I want to read this book

I am a fan of Fowley-Doyle's books. Both The Accident Season and Spellbook of the Lost and Found were solid hits for me. I have grown to really appreciate Fowley-Doyle's lyrical and lush storytelling, as well as the twists and turns which are omnipresent in her stories. This book tackles multiple major women's issues, and I am interested in reading about them through the lens of a European writer. There's also all these things I want to know more about: the curse? the missing sister? what happened in Deena's family to earn the "bad apples" label? I expect Fowley-Doyle will deliver a story replete with atmosphere, surprises, and maybe even some magic.

Fan the Fame
Anna Priemaza
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Friendship
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: August 20, 2019
Goodreads
Equal parts Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl and Jennifer Mathieu’s Moxie, this fiercely crafted, feminist YA novel takes on fandom, accountability, and doing the right thing. Even when it hurts.

Lainey wouldn’t mind lugging a camera around a video game convention for her brother, aka YouTube superstar Codemeister, except for one big problem. He’s funny and charming online, but behind closed doors, Cody is a sexist jerk.

SamTheBrave came to this year’s con with one mission: meeting Codemeister—because getting his idol’s attention could be the big break Sam needs.

ShadowWillow is already a successful streamer. But when her fans start shipping her with Code, Shadow concocts a plan to turn the rumors to her advantage.

The three teens’ paths collide when Lainey records one of Cody’s hateful rants on video. Because she’s determined to spill the truth to her brother’s fans—even if that means putting Sam and Shadow in the crosshairs.

Told through three relatable voices and arriving on the heels of the author’s widely praised debut novel, Kat and Meg Conquer the World, this sophomore novel is a nuanced and timely story about followers, fame, and fighting for what’s right.
Why I want to read this book

The number one thing that drew me to this book was the author. I really enjoyed Priemaza's debut, Kat and Meg Conquer the World, so obviously, I was interested in her follow-up. After the reading the synopsis, I see many things that have piqued my interest.

  • Back to a con. Conventions are always fun, and the closed environment usually results in a great backdrop for drama.
  • The world of online celebrity is such a big thing, and I enjoy peeking into that world.
  • I am more than interested in seeing how this all plays out, and finding out how Priemaza tackles the evils of online life.
  • Two authors, who I love, are name dropped in the description. If the comparison is anywhere close to be correct, the book should be a hit for me.

  1. After Geekerella, I'm kind of obsessed with books that feature cons so Fan the Flame sounds like one I definitely need to try. All the Bad Apples sounds good too!

    1. Once Upon a Con is such a great series, and I though Priemaza did a great job with the con in her last book. This one sounds like it takes place wholly at the con, so I am looking forward to it all.

  10. All The Bad Apples sounds interesting, does it have a paranormal twist? Or is the curse a non-literal thing?

    1. Fowley-Doyle usually has a bit of magic in her books. Not sure how it will play out in this one. I do know there are many flashbacks to how the women in her family were abused, etc, but I don't know much more than that.

    1. I think the title eludes to all the women in her family, who came before her, and the ways they were considered "bad".

  16. I'm the same way Sam; If I see an author that I love their book automatically gets added to my TBR! Both of these books sound interesting! Conventions and the behind the scenes are always a ton of fun, which makes Fan the Fame stick out to me! All the Bad Apples sounds magical, and I am curious about the letters and the family curse! Great picks!

    1. Fowley-Doyle definitely does atmospheric, but it's more tension than horror type creepy.
