Sloth Goes Places - Nebraska

Sloth Goes Places is a feature where I share books I have tracked from the Literary Escapes and Read Around the USA reading challenges.

Today we are looking at books set in ....

Nebraska

Neither Sloth nor I have been to Nebraska. I always envision farms for miles for this landlocked state, but I know they have big cities just like the rest of us. While searching for what this state is known for (I already knew corn), but Nebraska also gave us Kool-Aid and Ruben sandwiches. That was news to me.

I sometimes stumble across books set in this state, but I can normally depend on Lynn Painter for one. Rainbow Rowell has also set quite a few in Nebraska.

If Tomorrow Never Comes

Fate connects two people in life-changing ways in a deeply romantic and emotional novel about hope and second chances by the author of Would You Rather and The Roommate Pact.

Uncertain of what tomorrow brings, Elliott Holland decides to live it up—on the eve of a stem cell transplant to treat her leukemia. It’s destiny when she crosses paths with handsome and charming Jamie Sullivan. The chemistry is magic. So is a beautiful evening that ends with a bittersweet kiss goodbye and no expectations of ever seeing each other again.

One year later, Elliott’s future looks good. Her cancer is in remission. Her career in graphic design is taking off. And she’s finally met Carly, the young woman whose stem cell donation gave Elliott a second chance at life. Then, in a twist of fate both blissful and unfair, she meets Carly’s boyfriend. It’s Jamie, the man Elliott kissed like it was her last day on earth. Neither of them has ever forgotten it.

Now, the most difficult decisions of all lie ahead. Whatever risks there are to the heart, one need wins to grab hold of everything that can make someone feel alive again.

This was a really lovely story of two people who shared an amazing night, and then she disappeared. Carly never forgot that night and she worked hard towards her recovery, and then, the universe reunited them. It seemed meant-to-be but Elliott's situation changed quite a bit in the intervening year. Lots of pining and trying to be just friends here, and I was very invested in seeing these two work it out.

Maid for Each Other
 by Lynn Painter
Published by Berkley on July 15, 2025
Age/Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
four-half-stars

A millionaire and a house cleaner are a match maid in heaven in this sparkling new romantic comedy by Lynn Painter, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Happily Never After.

As a professional cleaner, Abi Mariano never thought her apartment would have any sort of infestation, but because of a building-wide outbreak, she now needs somewhere to stay for a week. As a part-time student with two jobs, she doesn’t have many options. Then the solution presents itself: the owner of the penthouse she cleans is out of town for the week. She normally wouldn’t consider it, but he’s literally never around (she hasn’t even met him). It goes great…until one morning she finds two strangers in the kitchen. They’re the parents of the penthouse owner and they seem to think they’ve heard all about Abi—not as their son’s maid, but as his girlfriend.

Declan Powell has always put his career first, working his way up to become an executive at his company, but he still has his sights set on the next level. When his parents mention that they met his girlfriend, “Abby,” he all but chokes on his escargot. As wonderful as it sounds that she was just darling, he doesn’t actually have a girlfriend—he made her up to get everyone off his back. When Dex finds out who Abi really is, he makes her a proposition: pretend to date him, and he’ll provide everything she needs during their little arrangement. What harm would it do? It’s purely business, no pleasure…right?

Fun premise. A man makes up a girlfriend, but then needs her to actually show up for some events. It's kismet that his maid shares a name with his fake girlfriend, right? I had a good time reading this one, as expected since it's a Lynn Painter book.

Relationship Goals
 by Brittany Kelley
Published by Berkley on July 8, 2025
Age/Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
four-stars
Goodreads

An infamously grumpy star soccer player is forced to fake date a Hollywood starlet, only to develop real feelings for her—just as she learns he was pretending and vows to get even.

Abigail Hunt’s Hollywood dreams could best be described as slow burn…but she’s about to graduate from TV sidekick to dramatic actor. When the esteemed director of what she’s hoping will be her breakout role suggests she do a deep-dive for her part by shadowing the director of a struggling pro soccer team, she jumps at the chance to prove she’s ready.

She wasn’t expecting notorious grump and gorgeous star player Luke Wolfe to ask her out though, and suddenly her research is getting a lot more…hands-on. Their relationship quickly sets social media on fire, and Luke seems determined to prove he’s more than his villainous reputation. But just when Abby is happier than ever—her name in the spotlight and heart in good hands—the other cleat drops: Luke was coerced into faking their relationship.

Furious, Abby refuses to give him the satisfaction of dumping him—she decides to get even. It’s only a matter of time until she pushes the right buttons.

She just didn’t expect him to keep putting up with it—or to say I love you.

Another fauxmance here with a grumpy hero needing to rehab his image. Enter American's sweetheart. This book leaned into many classic rom-com tropes and tapped How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days energy. It was amusing and made me laugh, and I did like seeing Luke's transformation.
