Top Ten Tuesday - Made Me Look

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Made Me Look!

Happy Tuesday! I struggle with freebies and went back and forth on what I would talk about this week. Then I thought about when I am perusing the eLibrary, Amazon, or Netgalley and wanted to share what makes me click the link to learn more about a book.

What I Like
  1. Author - If it's an author I have read and enjoyed before, I will always want to learn more about their work. I usually have good luck with the same authors and am confident I will enjoy more of their work.
  2. Title - There is nothing like a creative title to catch my eye. I love a punny title, but there are also certain words that will catch my eye and make me want to know more.
  3. Cover - I am a cover-ho, and a good cover will always get my attention though there are certain elements that will ALWAYS make me look.
  4. Animals on the cover - I have read a lot of books based on this criteria alone. I have a thing for furry friends, and these covers radiated warmth and drew me in.
  5. Description - If the synopsis eludes to the story being heartwarming or feel-good, I am in!
  6. Setting - You guys know I do reading challenges, and I will pick up a book based on its setting to be able to check something off my list.

What makes me walk away
  1. Page count - Look, I am not a big book lover. I like my books to be under 400 pages. I have wasted time reading long books that could have been shorter and am therefore suspect of chonky books.
  2. Issues books - I get enough reality in real life, I don't need to be overwhelmed by issues in books. I am looking for entertainment not agendas or soapboxing.
  3. A bad cover - I already admitted that I judge books by their covers, and a book with a bad cover will capture my attention in a negative way. What can I say, I am shallow.
  4. Blurb - If an author I didn't enjoy blurbs a book, that could very well be a strike against the book. I also don't care if it was a celebrity book club pick, Tik Tok sensation, or NYT best seller.

How do books draw or repel you?

  1. Great post, Sam! I can relate to what you like—a lot of it is the same for me. I can't lie and say that a cover doesn't make a huge difference, at least in making me look. I've been fooled by a plain or boring or weird cover before, but I'm usually attracted to the fun, colourful, and also illustrated covers. 😍

    1. When they post books on NG with the placeholder covers, I try to be objective and read the summary, but I need the cover to give me a feel for it. YES! Colorful and fun - 100%.

  2. Setting doesn't have a huge impact on me, and I don't mind longer reads, but the rest I agree with 1000x over!

    1. I like getting to the conclusion quickly, I suppose. When the book is too long, I feel like I am waiting forever to find out what this was all about.

  3. I agree with all of these except #4. There's nothing wrong with animals on the cover, I'm just not personally drawn to those.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  4. I judge books by their covers too. A good cover is the quickest way to make me read the synopsis.

    1. I think a cover is a critical part of marketing a book.

    1. I don't want to read a book for several days. I like to start it one day and finish it the next. I enjoy the variety, like watching a bunch of TV shows. I never binge watched in my life. That's too long in one world.

  6. Great topic Sam. I'm with you on the cover lover thing. I also choose books for my challenges. We have a lot in common.
