Life of a Blogger: Dreams (The Sleeping Kind)

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Dreams (the sleeping kind)!

 Kiersten
I almost never dream when I sleep - rather, since I'm usually corrected that everyone always dreams, I almost never remember my dreams. If I do, it's usually more of an odd impression of discomfort that goes away after a few minutes. It's a very strange phenomena. I don't know why I almost never remember my dreams but it doesn't especially bother me either.

 Marlon
If I dream, I don't remember them when I'm coming out of my sleepy times. Rarely though, I do have dreams intense enough that I remember; in times of duress or discomfort, I will have seriously vivid dreams where I wake up and I have to figure out during the day what reality is. Like the time I dreamed I was running away with a friend of mine to some village somewhere and we had this whole life together and when I woke up I called him . . . at like 7am . . . to confirm that that didn't happen.

 Noor
I find that in general, when I remember my dreams, they're always very strange -- usually in-depth stories or very trippy disconnected scenes. They're pretty entertaining to think about after, although some of them aren't so fun while they're happening. The last dream I remember was two nights ago (well technically I remember last night's dream but only a little) and all my friends and I were in this weird casino-type setting and the people owning the place told us "you have to do all these things or we will shoot you" and we were broken into groups, so I was playing a board game with my friend and this girl I strongly dislike and whoever lost would be either evicted or shot but if we left we would also be shot and somewhere in the corner they were forcing someone else I knew to drink an enormous bottle of questionable liquid or suffer the aforementioned consequences. And then my roommate mentioned how we wouldn't be back in time for Board Games (a fellowship that occurs at 7:30 every Tuesday in which board games are played) and everyone got panicked and went into a frenzy but then we said "It's okay, we'll just move it to later" and it was fine. Yeah, I don't know, it was weird. Not as weird as that time a few weeks ago when I dreamt I got kicked out of Walmart because I destroyed the cheesecake aisle and started a war. (Follow me on Twitter for more updates about my weird dreams) (And my weird life)

 Amrutha
Okay so when I remember my dreams, like Noor, they're always crazy weird. A lot of my dreams are really repetitive and all the weirdest tropes tend to repeat themselves. There is one particular symbol in a lot of my dreams and I'm still not sure what exactly it means -- if you know what dreams mean and can analyze them, please tell me what this is about in the comments below! Okay, so in a lot of my dreams, when I say/do something wrong/awkward, whoever happens to be present in the dream with me throws lettuce at me. Yep, just like out of a bowl or a bag or whatever, I literally get it tossed at me and literally I think if someone were to throw lettuce at me in real life they might actually manage to convince me that I was dreaming. I also have a repeating theme in dreams where I travel to North Korea (a North Korea that looks like Santorini, Greece) and I have to make my way back to China. Another repeating symbol is this couch that was at an event I went to once. For whatever reason, a lot of my conversational dreams/dreams where I'm playing cards/board games with friends all happen on that couch. Okay so now you know about weird repetitive themes in my dreams and they don't get much weirder than this so I think I'll stop here.

Do you have any interesting dreams while you're sleeping?

Life of a Blogger: Nature

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Nature!

 Kiersten
I do not like nature. Being outside makes me sad. Pictures of nature are ok, though. This is basically all I have to say about nature... So, yea.

 Marlon
Most people discuss nature as synonymous with the "outdoors" or anything green-ish. In that definition there is a strong love-hate relationship. It's pretty but godamn I suck at handling insects of any kinds and humidity makes me want to curl up into a ball and die. But anyway, I consider nature as synonymous with the universe - not to be pretentious, it's just what I've been taught. And I love the universe as a whole. It's existence, the random bits that make it work like gravity, all of the awesome things that terrify me about it. Go space.

 Noor
Nature is pretty rad. I'm not gonna deny that I spend most of my time indoors either at a computer, with my phone, or behind the pages of a book (none of which are mutually exclusive). However, I do generally like nature despite not spending too much engulfed in it. I like taking photos and not only are photos of outdoor things often very lovely, but there are also some very nice photoshoot locations that are all natural and outdoorsy. Also, if the weather is nice, I like reading outdoors, especially in secluded-type areas. And I enjoy hiking and stuff in moderation, especially if it involves lakes because I dig lakes. However, I usually like doing these things in optimal weather conditions when there are no visible bugs -- especially ones that can fly or like really annoying ones like mosquitos or really terrifying unnamed ones -- and it's not gross and humid and I won't feel like dying.

 Amrutha
I really do like nature when I don't need to interact with it too often and I interact with it on my terms. I enjoy being in the rain and appreciating nice scenic things but do I enjoy being in the pouring rain when I need to get to class and the busses are late and it happens to be the one day in like 14 years I've chosen to to do my hair? No. I do not. Nature is beautiful in moderation and when I choose to experience it.

What do you think about nature?

Life of a Blogger: Favorite Quotes

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Favorite quotes!

 Kiersten
I don't have a ton of favorite quotes, but I have a few! There are SOOO many great quotes in Cassandra Clare's The Infernal Devices series. Here are a few of my favorites: "They say time heals all wounds, but that presumes the source the source of the grief is finite."; "One must always be careful of books ... and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us."; and the namesake for this blog, "We live and breathe words".

I also have some favorites from Rachel Hawkin's Hex Hall series. This one, however, is by far the best:"Right now, I'm so happy to see you that I wouldn't care if you're secretly a ninja sent from the future to destroy kittens and rainbows."

Then there are these last two favorites. The first comes from East of Eden by John Steinbeck: "And, of course, people are interested only in themselves. If a story is not about the hearer, he will not listen." Lastly, "There are two kinds of secrets: those we keep from others, and the ones we hide from ourselves." I'm not entirely sure where that one is from but it's been on my Facebook since middle school, so definitely a favorite.

 Marlon
First of all, no. NO. There are too godamn many. But here are a few.

"Menstruation, not hunting, was the great evolutionary leap forward." - Rosalind Miles, Who Cooked the Last Supper? The Women's History of the World. This book is godamn revolutionary, and is one of the most important pieces of literature to exist, especially alongside its other 80s titles, The Satanic Verses and The Handmaid's Tale. While the latter two are works of fiction that serve to undermine our conceptions of language, religion, identity, and history, Who Cooked Last Supper literally tracks the destruction of female autonomy and the creation and rise of the patriarchy through sociopolitical and religious systems. It's also frigging hilarious and so so so true.

Like Kiersten, I also enjoy Steinbeck's East of Eden: “I believe that there is one story in the world, and only one. . . . Humans are caught—in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too—in a net of good and evil. . . . There is no other story. A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well—or ill?” This book is one hell of a trip, man.

“To the dumb question "Why me?" the cosmos barely bothers to return the reply: why not?" - Christopher Hitchens, Mortality. Godamn man. Godamn. That's heavy.

"Literally every line from Hitchhikers Guide" - Seriously though.

There's a hell of a lot more but that list is just too endless.

 Noor
Wow I have so many favorite quotes someone please stop me before I list seven thousand because God knows I live for good quotes. Let's start with some I especially enjoy:

"The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math" - Matt Adrian. This is one of my favorite quotes ever and I feel like it personally resonates with me (even though let's be real most of the things I do are really impulsive and not calculated which is funny considering how much I overthink) and if I ever got a tattoo I'd want it to say this (probably) because of how relevant I feel it is.

“Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.” - Rumi. Okay, honestly, what I wanted to insert was every poem and every word Rumi has every uttered but for the interest of concision I decided to just pick one. I really like this one, I feel like it says a lot by saying a little.

"“I liked myths. They weren't adult stories and they weren't children's stories. They were better than that. They just were.” - Neil Gaiman. I also wanted to include all of Neil Gaiman's works because he's my favorite author and I had to settle on just the one quote and it was really stressful but I really enjoy this one and the idea of just being.

"“Leaving feels good and pure only when you leave something important, something that mattered to you. Pulling life out by the roots. But you can't do that until your life has grown roots.” - John Green. We're gonna go with the common theme of "I wanted to do all the quotes and had to pick one." Paper Towns is my favorite John Green book and I love both this quote and every mention of string-breaking, I just find it very hard-hitting and resonant.

"How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become?" - Doc Luben. I also wanted to put a lot of poetry, especially spoken word and slam poetry, quotes on here, and also reigned back and just picked one and this line gave me chills when I first heard it, especially in context with the rest of the poem.

I have a lot of other quotes I like and honestly I'm bad at listing favorites when you ask for them so like this probably isn't even a "correct" list if you're judging by whether they're like my top favorites of my all time, much less a comprehensive list, but it's definitely still a valid one because I love all these quotes dearly!

 Amrutha
There are literally so many that I could never even wrap my head around listing them all, and I think I live to find good quotes and it is a truth I stand by that in every good piece of writing, there is at least one line that should make your heart stop -- these are a few of them.

"Along with the idea of romantic love, she was introduced to another -- physical beauty. Probably the most destructive ideas in the history of human thought. Both originated in envy, thrived in insecurity, and ended in disillusion." - Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye. I actually didn't enjoy the story that much because I was horrified by the plot, but Morrison is an amazing writer and this line has stuck with me for so long, and I can't really put my finger on why, other than that it flows in a way that I want everything I ever say to flow.

"Certain thoughts are prayers. There are moments when, whatever be the attitude of the body, the soul is on its knees." - Victor Hugo. While I'm not religious, this quote grounds me like no other.

"I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones, and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited." - Sylvia Plath. Plath was basically the beginning of my experience of being completely honest with myself. Plath and Esther Greenwood from The Bell Jar, through poems and journals and the novel, prove themselves to be the most brutally honest people (to themselves). It was a wake up call I desperately needed at 14 and I'll forever love the quote and everything else Sylvia Plath has ever written.

I love pretty much Joan Didion has ever said but "Do not whine...do not complain. Work harder. Spend more time alone." and "Self respect is a question of recognizing that everything worth having has a price." Everything this woman says is just so inspiring to me.

Life of a Blogger: Favorite Movies (Freebie)

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is a freebie so we chose...

Favorite movies!

 Kiersten

Ugh, so many favorites. I definitely have an unhealthy obsession with Pitch Perfect (I can recite most of the movie and do the dances). I also really like Disney Channel movies from my childhood. I think Go Figure is the most underrated DCOM ever and I'm still upset that I can't buy it on DVD. Staying in the same genre, I am a huge fan of Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (and basically everything else Lindsay Lohan was in around that time), Aquamarine, Ice Princess, Stick It, Bring It On (the original, Again, All or Nothing, and In It to Win It), and ANYTHING AMANDA BYNES IS IN BUT ESPECIALLY SHE'S THE MAN. I'm also a HUGE fan of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Easy A, Fight Club, and Donnie Darko. For animated movies, my favorites are Mulan, The Winnie the Pooh Movie (the most recent one with that song "Everything is Honey"), Anastasia (actually so good though), and Hercules (which is definitely an underrated Disney film). Well, we have quite the mix here so I'm just going to stop.

 Marlon

Ooh this is hard . . . I love  lot of movies. I don't watch a lot of movies, mostly TV, but ugh I love so many. Without any particular order, these are the movies that immediately come to mind: V for Vendetta, Into the Woods, Inception. V is just a masterpiece of social commentary and has probably the largest well of quotable lines. It's genius, really. I love Into the Woods because, well, let's be honest, AGONY and the lowkey polyamorous song that Emily Blunt sings -- but also the well structured plot and engaging narrative. Inception, well . . . my god that soundtrack and my god that story is just . . . my god. But I have lots of types of favorites too . . . like Big Hero 6 immediately comes to mind for animated films, along with How to Train your Dragon 2, because both films are incredibly good with gender and ethnic representation while also boasting undeniably awesome plots and narratives and just really cool characters. Also the Avengers. Never forget. I'm going to stop now.

 Noor

I LOVE SO MANY MOVIES, which is why when people ask me what my favorite movie is I have figured out my top three (I can't narrow it down past that) so I tell them that, so if you'd like to know, my top three favorite movies are The Social Network, V For Vendetta, and American Psycho. The Social Network is where I first fell in love with Andrew Garfield and he's been the love of my life ever since. Of course, there are plenty of other movies I can't get enough of. For example, pretty much anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Right now, I think my favorite has to be Captain America 2, but there are some very promising ones coming out threatening that spot (cough civil war; cough age of ultron). I've also developed a deep love for Big Hero 6. And of course, I can't forget to mention my favorite Disney movie, which is Tangled. I have so many more movies which I adore beyond belief but a comprehensive list of favorites would take up a lot of time and a lot of room so let's just go with these for now.

 Amrutha

There are just so many, this is actually a struggle for me. Just like my fellow bloggers, I love love loved V for Vendetta (Natalie Portman is a queen on so many levels), Love Actually (because really, who doesn't), and Good Will Hunting. But most of all, I really love bad chick flicks, good chick flicks, chick flicks of any sort -- any sort of mushy romance, big gesture for love, or ridiculous romcom are just my game. Name a romance movie, chances are I've probably seen it. Also Disney/Pixar are just baes because pretty much all of their movies are beloved. I also loved Tangled and Mulan and Aladdin, so I'd say theres a tie between my three favorite Disney movies there. This seems like a lot so I'm going to cut myself off right now because if I don't I will continue forever.

What are some of your favorite movies?

Life of a Blogger - Routines

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Routines!

 Kiersten

To be honest, I don't have much of a routine. I mean, there is some order in my life: I have a class schedule; I live by the bus schedule; I have pledge meetings at my sorority; I used to have regular dance rehearsals up until this weekend. Other than that, however, my life is pretty erratic. I don't have a regular sleep schedule since my classes are all over the place. I also don't have specific times I like to work on classwork, shower, or anything like that. I pretty much just do things whenever I feel like it or have time. Or when I have to - for example, I do my laundry when I run out of clean underwear. Basically, my life lacks structure and maybe I should add some...

 Marlon

As a commuter, routines are the bane of my existence. Wake up either at 7:30am or 9:00am to get on a train to go to my 9:30 or 11:00 class to begin the day, work through those classes, go to my clubs or meet with my advisers, come home, drop all my crap and repeat. It's more complicated than that, but generally a lot of my time is wasted on the routine things that I have to do, and its quite bothersome but there are some things which I enjoy. Like showering at midnight and doing laundry on Fridays. I like Fridays. No work. Nice, warm, new sheets. It's a glimmer of hope.

I also go through a buttload of T.V. shows in a routine and somewhat organized manner. Often I'm not home when they air, and if I am I'm busy, so I download the episodes and watch them later. So Thursday mornings, for example, are spent on the train, but also spent watching The 100 episodes. Likewise, Wednesday, my only-two-class day, is spent watching Gotham, Supernatural, The Flash, and Agent Carter, or whatever shows on Tuesday. It keeps me sane.

Generally with food I try to eat on the train? I pack most of what I need but I often end up buying something around 4pm from around the Washington Square area.

I hate routines. Long live the chaos and anarchy of summertime.

 Noor

Like Kiersten, I'm not much of a routine person. The things I do routinely are things I have to do routinely. I go to class at the same time every week because that's how classes work. I take my medication every night because if I don't I'll have seizures and vomit six times in a day and get my roommates laundry without remembering it. I do normal people things like showering and tooth-brushing. I don't really do laundry very often because I can go a while without repeating clothes.

My club meetings are kindof routine but some of them conflict with other things I have to do, such as weekly service events for APO (the community service fraternity I'm in) so I try to switch it up and go to meetings some weeks and weeklies some others but I can't really keep it at a strict every other week schedule because it depends on whether the events are capped on the calendar and what's going on with the meetings, ya feel? APO (which I mentioned before, it stands for Alpha Phi Omega) meetings don't conflict with anything because they're at 9PM on Wednesdays so those are pretty routine.

I don't sleep or eat regularly (sometimes not even every day but I'm getting a lot better at that!) but every Wednesday after my 9 AM class, my friends from the class get lunch or breakfast or whatever it is and sit and chill for many hours until like 2 PM and there's usually a rotating cast of people joining us and it's pretty nice and that's a regular thing and my only really regular eating thing because other than that I just eat when the people I'm with are eating and I think it's been an adequate amount of hours since my last meal.

I've started making my bed and tidying up every day because some weird part of me is on a strange kick and I don't know when it's going to stop but I'm really feeling it.

Other than that I don't do much routinely other than stalk my future bae's every move...I mean what??????

 Amrutha

I am also not much a routine person -- while I do everything on a routine that absolutely requires it (classes, club meetings, research, etc), I generally like to enjoy a certain amount of flexibility in terms of when I want to do things. I generally structure stuff on a day by day basis with to do lists and things but usually I use it just as a starting point for my day. While I most always get done what needs to get done (also like eating and showering and whatnot), it almost never happens in the same order every time.

I tend to like to do one thing for a long stretch of time, like I like to commit to studying one subject for a while or marathoning a tv show or dedicating multiple hours to doing things. I find that I'm so much more productive when I commit a long stretch of my day to a certain activity rather than trying to do bits and pieces of different things over that same stretch -- I'd rather write an essay in one shot than write a paragraph, read a chapter of a book, and then go over some vocab words. It would more or less be me dedicating a whole bit of time to the essay, and then time to the whole book, and then time to all of the vocab words.

I pretty much sporadically clean and fairly spontaneously decide when I'm going to be social and what have you, so routines kind of take a backseat in my life.

Also, not to worry, I know that Noor stalks my every move, not sure why she called me her "future" bae though :(

What are some of your routines?

Life of a Blogger - Websites

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Websites (favorites and most used)!

 Kiersten
My most used website is easily Facebook. I honestly believe Facebook is a glorious place, filled with Buzzfeed quizzes and pictures of cats. Speaking of Buzzfeed, I also tend to troll around on that website quite a bit. Besides Facebook, Buzzfeed, and other miscellaneous quiz/lists I find on Facebook, I frequent Blogger, Goodreads, and Google. Blogger is a bit self explanatory since this blog is hosted by Blogger. As for Goodreads, I think it's possibly one of the most useful websites on the internet. Goodreads is how I shelve all the books I want to read and have waiting to be read. As an ebook reader, it can be difficult to manage the books I have without Goodreads. Then there is Google. For my design classes, I often use Google to find research images. Also, Google is just awesome - you can find all the things!

There are also the websites on which I want to spent all my money. Amazon is a great website because there are so many things and I can get two day shipping on many things via Prime. I'm also obsessed with ModCloth and Wildfox.

 Marlon

Literally so much tumblr. Too much tumblr. Also YouTube. I am lam, I use the most used sites. Wiki sites.

 Noor
If we're going off of what Chrome tells me are my most used sites, I apparently visit this blog and also Blogger quite a bit, which I suppose makes sense considering I read all the blog posts and reviews that aren't mine and and also refresh Blogger quite often because I always end up opening a draft and then having to leave and not being able to work on it and then closing the tab, and then trying again later, but having it happen again, and repeat infinitely.

Next, we have Tumblr, which I think is only not higher up because the tab is generally always open and I refresh when I feel the need to so the "hits" are probably lower, which places it as my third most used site which is still pretty high up so "it just goes to show you stuff." (That's a reference to Over The Garden Wall, which is this 10-episode miniseries that YOU HAVE TO WATCH RIGHT NOW) But uhm yeah, I waste a lot of time on Tumblr and it's getting really unhealthy. Sob.

Twitter, I use more on my phone but occasionally on the computer as well. I personally think that if you're not following me on Twitter you are missing on the most hilarious and also probably most mentally unstable (but in a totally witty and relatable way) aspect of my personality and I probably resent you a little.

I use Facebook a lot (but never during class, mom). It's pretty rad. I think people who think they're too cool for Facebook are actually really lame (not people who just don't use it because they don't want to or are uninterested or some other reason. Just people who are like "ugh Facebook is so lame no one uses it anymore. I'm not going to rant about this here but just know that I'm judging you).

I also have an unhealthy obsession with YouTubers, the platform for which is naturally YouTube. Many of them. I don't want to start naming any because I don't want to leave any out but then I can't list them all but it takes up a lot of my time. VidCon has been my goal for like all of the years.

I love to order things online and might have an addiction so not only is Amazon one of my most visited sites but also just sites for clothing stores I frequent and sites like Etsy as well.

I also like websites like Buzzfeed and Thought Catalog. Also news sites.

Also Pinterest even though I can never do any of the things described.

Okay, what we're getting out of this is that I use the internet way too much and I have way too many favorite and highly used websites so I'm just gonna stop talking now and props to you if you kept reading this far. Peace out cub scouts.

 Amrutha
So basically I spend 100% of my life chilling on the internet. Facebook and Google are easily tied for my most visited website -- I'm one of those people who never got over the Facebook craze because I just love the chat feature too much to let it go. As for Google, I ask so many dumb questions to myself that I absolutely need an answer to and refuse to ask other people about: example: how to apply suction cups effectively on surfaces that aren't windows or metal. I also love Tumblr and Youtube and Buzzfeed, although my Buzzfeed obsession is waning because of their blatant disregard for actually interpreting statistics and publishing completely biased news which is presented to the masses as a complete truth.

Otherwise, Google Chrome tells me that I visit this blog, Blogger, Gmail, and my school's website an awful lot. Other than that, I tend to spend a lot of time reading news articles, and I frequent Time and other news websites, and also satire things, like The Onion fairly often. Also, HuffPost which is like a fun combination of real news, satire, and Buzzfeed. Also I spend a lot of time on Wikipedia/Wikihow because I just like to know things but real research takes lots of time and this provides an easy medium for it.

Life of a Blogger - Superpowers

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

What superpower would you chose?

 Kiersten
Teleportation. There is absolutely no question about this in my opinion. I am a bit of a lazy person, who does not like to walk far to get places. I also hate having to wake up extra early to take the bus to class. Being able to teleport would cut down on time and effort required to get places. It's also SUPER CONVENIENT! If I missed the bus, I wouldn't have to wait for the next one or walk to class - I COULD JUST TELEPORT.

In summation, teleportation is the bomb.

 Marlon
Are there any limitations for this question? Can I choose omnipotence and omniscience? Granted, having the power to do and know everything seems extremely boring. When you can do anything, there's noting left to do, because what could you possibly have to want.

Obviously, I'm overthinking.

I think I would go with the Intersect from Chuck, a database interface uploaded to the brain which grants access to a lot o human knowledge, current human knowledge at least. It also can give you kung fu. As a kid and teenager watching Chuck, I always loved that, while Chuck, the main character, could do incredible things with the Intersect, like disarm a bomb with no previous knowledge of the science involved, the effects were temporary. Chuck always stayed regular Chuck, and had to train pretty hard to keep up with the rest of his team. A superpower that keeps the human aspect -- it was something I was always amazed by.What I'm saying is I'm not over the end of the show. Please bring Chuck back.

 Noor
I have to pick just one?
Really?
Whenever the superpower question comes up I automatically default to mind reading as my number one choice, which I guess is pretty basic. I mean, reading minds isn't basic, I don't personally know anyone who can (although if they could I think they'd keep it a secret so the jury's out on that one), I just mean it's one of the more common ones to choose, not something weird and obscure. I used to always say it was a tie between mind reading and invisibility but mind reading won out so if you ever want to hear about why I think invisibility is second coolest let me know and I'll fill you in.

Anyway, I just always thought it would be so useful to read minds. I could have the upper hand in every situation. I've always been all about not necessarily having leverage but just not giving other people leverage over me, so the whole mind reading thing could ease many situations. And I like having power and being in control. And knowing things. Also, I figure it can't end too badly because I wouldn't go around digging up embarrassing secrets about people I didn't like and publicizing them and if I found out something I wasn't supposed to know about someone I'd probably just pretend not to know. I think I'd want selective mind reading so I couldn't hear everyone's thoughts all the time but just choose who to listen to at a particular moment. I also realize that sometimes the things you think aren't really the things you think (or feel). Like, I have weird daydreams and while a lot of them take place in crazy alternate reality situations, some of them are just imagined versions of real-life situations and if someone read my mind they might think I felt a certain way when I didn't so I get that there's drawbacks to every superpower. I just really like the idea of mind reading.

 Amrutha
Time travel? Time travel. I could travel back to two days ago or two minutes ago and remedy awkward moments or visit old time periods or go see the future and check out different places at different times. I could learn so much just by existing in different times and I can't imagine anything that could be cooler than that. I want so much to travel in real life and adding another dimension of traveling through time seems like the coolest possible superpower I could have.

What superpower would you chose?

Life of a Blogger - Goals and Dreams

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Goals and dreams!

 Kiersten
I'll start with scholastic goals. By the time May 2017 rolls around, I'd like to have at least a 3.8 GPA to graduate Summa Cum Laude. Also graduating is a goal. More presently, I'd like to balance my school work with all my other time commitments.

In terms of long term goals and dreams, I'd like to work as a costume designer in film. Obviously this is something that will take time and a lot of work to accomplish, but eventually I hope to get there.

Other goals? Sleeping, being healthy, staying on top of my blog commitments. Other than that, I kind of just like to face challenges and make goals as I go.

 Marlon
Goals and dreams are a difficult concept for me because they're about as clear as mud most of the time, yet they define who I am.

I would like to be a novelist and poet. I realize of course that these are self-fulfilling actions. Writing novels makes you a novelist, writing poetry makes you a poet. But you know what I mean. I want to have conversations with the world. I am knee-deep in writing poetry in preparation for some slams I have in Boston, Yale, and Virginia and I'm so excited I really can't believe I've gotten this far, even though it's mostly been luck of the draw. Even so, I want to push myself to any limits I can find and I'm very thankful for the people I've met along the way. As for novels . . . I've had a hard time the past few years but enough support from the few friends I have and the self-determination to keep me writing prose, even if it's not much.

I plan to be one day not have to take the goddamn train. Commuting sucks ducks.

A recently acquired goal that came along with my major declaration (Global Liberal Studies, concentration in Politics, Rights, and Development) is trying to help mend the disturbing policies and mindsets we treat immigrants, whether they've arrived legally or not, within the U.S. For instance, the Post-9/11 arena was especially difficult for muslims (culturally and religiously), even the ones who've been here several generations. And we all know the extreme vitriol presented against those south of the Mexican-American border. As an immigrant myself it's something I've never thought I'd have much power to do anything about but now I aspire to find that voice and help people that deal with this struggle.

Someday, I would like my own library. It can be small, it can be half a room. But I would like a library. I've wanted one the moment I started reading. You could come borrow books if you wanted but my late fees include capital punishment so don' be late.

I have quite a few aspirations – some stretch life goals, some doable career goals, some tiny personal goals. My dreams are a mix of things that make up a big part of my personality.

One of my big dreams is to be a writer, which sounds really vague, but I figured I’d make this one big blurb of types of writing goals, which I have a few different kinds of. First of all, ever since I was little, I’ve always thought that I wanted to write books. This is a goal I know many people share with me, especially in the blogging community (and in the Journalism/English major community) but is something I still hold close to me. Sometimes I waver in my confidence, but then I remember I have a lot of support – I have this one friend and whenever I make (usually insulting or sarcastic) comments she always tells me that she can’t wait for the day I write a novel, and compared me to her favorite author which is a really big deal and I appreciate a lot and always think about whenever I feel frustrated. Another spoke in my wheel of writing goals is the poetry one. I really want to work on writing more poetry and honing my skills, or even reading it at more events because I really enjoy it and want to incorporate it into my life more. The last writing goal I’m going to talk about is more career/college oriented. My major is Journalism and Professional Writing. It has writing right there in the title. I’m still trying to figure out where I want to go down the road so my goals are a little murky and they keep changing, but I know I enjoy writing articles where I have freedom to research as opposed to breaking news stories so there’s a direction for my type of journalism. I’d love to go into something high-profile, which could be a stretch, but no one gets anywhere playing it safe, right?

I know that got a little long (I feel like everything I write always gets a little too long, I’m sorry) but I still want to mention some of my not-writing goals. Like Amrutha, I really want to travel. I currently really want to visit Malaysia and Amsterdam specifically (and before you ask, it isn’t because of The Fault in Our Stars) but honestly, I just want to roam the world and soak in all of it.

I plan to, when I have my own house or apartment or whatever residence I’m in, have a cardboard cutout in every room, just to give it some character. I’ve got one of Loki right now, but since only one room in my house belongs to me, (and one room in my residence hall) I have to wait before I expand.

And last but not least, I just want to take this year to let go of toxic relationships, eat lots of good food, and move forward with life changes that are all about what's best for myself.

 Amrutha
Hey y'all! Talking about goals and dreams -- I'm fairly ambitious (as everyone at WLABB is, but I'll try and keep it fairly concise for the sake of this post). So I want to be a lawyer, preferably something non-profit/international affairs related, or maybe something related to the actual writing of policy. I feel like those things really allow the justice system to work for the people and its just something I really want to be apart of. Outside of that, I want to do other fun things like write a novel and get featured on Humans of New York and give a Ted Talk. A lot of these are just bucket list items because there are just SO many dreams I have of random stuff non-professional related. This continues to traveling (I want to see every continent and go to space and just experience so many different cultures). Realistically I want to do service projects and maybe road-trip across the country or backpack through Europe. There are just so many things I want to experience and take part in and I feel as though I just don't have enough time to accomplish all of that. Outside of professional/novelty goals, I also just have the regular old goals of being better at managing my time, taking better care of my skin/body, saying every nice thing I think about someone to them, and generally reminding people I love that I really appreciate their presence in my life.

All of these goals are things I really aspire to achieve and honestly try to work at the best I can. I can't wait to hear about your goals!

What are some of your goals and dreams?

Life of a Blogger - Achievements

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Achievements!

 Kiersten
Achievements. I suppose I have some. I also suppose that achievements are something relative to how you see them, so here goes nothing.

One recent achievement that I was really proud of was pulling off all the shows I worked on last semester. On top of taking a full course load, I designed two shows (with one of them involving A TON of alterations to the pieces) and stepped up from assistant to designer on a show within a month of the opening. The last of those three was definitely the most challenging since I was thrown into the process and had to work really fast. There were also over 150 different looks in the show, so it was really crazy and I'm very proud of myself for pulling it off.

Maintaining a high GPA in life is something I've always strived for and been proud of. In high school I graduated 11th in my class, which was cool. Now I'm still maintaining a high GPA, although I'm trying to get it even higher.

Honestly, I'm really proud of all the work I do here on We Live and Breathe Books. I feel as though having this blog with people who actually want to read what we have to say is such an achievement and I'm really thankful for my co-bloggers (even though they are sometimes difficult to work with) and everyone who reads this blog. You guys are the coolest.

Also, one thing that I was really proud of achieving was my senior year of high school at my last dance competition. At the competition, I received a Platinum (the highest medal type, which depends on score, at the specific competition) and I placed fifth overall. I never thought of myself as the most amazing dancer but I had always wanted to get the highest medal at a competition so I was really happy that I was able to before graduating.

I'm sure there are more, minor achievements, but I think I've talked enough about myself for one blog post.

 Marlon
I don't really have many achievements I can easily think of but I guess I can try?

I've logged over a thousand hours playing Kingdom Hearts games

I have a pretty high overall GPA? That's something I'm pretty hyped about. The past couple of years have been kind of a roller coaster of soul searching and lots of bad decisions but also some awesome stuff. I realize that grades shouldn't define someone but I sort of live for that validation that I'm keeping up academically.

I once ate eight I-hop pancakes in one sitting. Also I am good at cuddling.

I am currently in NYU's CUPSI team for 2015 and also it's treasurer. I find this actually incredible. I haven't written a lot of poetry the last few months and I never thought I'd be slamming in CUPSI, because I watch Button Poetry religiously and I am often crushed by it. So what mixture of left over teenage angst and random words got me here? Idk???? But I'm excited!

I am a pretty laid back person, and it's taken me a while to achieve this level of not giving a damn but I am here. I have climbed this mountain.

Well that's all for me I guess?

 Noor
I don't think I've really achieved much ever??? Like this is gonna be really short compared to my usual rambles considering I'm pretty bad at life.

Okay, so this one is a personal achievement that I want to keep up but it's staying on the Dean's List! That means maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher (I don't know if it's different for different schools, but that's what it is for TCNJ). This past semester was really tough for me for a lot of reasons and it kindof kicked my butt and I honestly didn't have an idea of how I was going to do in any of my classes (except one) until after I submitted the finals, so that was nerve-wracking on it's own. Was I getting straight A's or straight D's? I didn't know and not for lack of keeping tabs on my grades. There was a lot of weird stuff that went on with my classes last semester. I've never been that stressed in my life and my mental health has never been in such a disastrous state. However, I survived and my GPA wasn't too badly wounded and I want to make sure I stay on the Dean's List for semesters to come, for my own personal sense of accomplishment mostly.

I just messaged a group chat of some of my friends asking what my achievements were because I couldn't think of them and the first thing one of my friends said was "not sleeping for a week." I don't think that counts as an achievement but I'm just gonna leave it here.

The next thing my friend told me I achieved (I think most of the things I'm going to write are things my friends told me because I can't really think of myself in terms of "hey look how awesome and accomplished you are") is "writing killer poetry and winning competitions." I don't really think my poetry is all that good and by winning competitions I don't mean like hella intense national level competitions I just sometimes read poetry at like school events or local events and sometimes there are places involved and sometimes I win or place? I don't know it's all pretty weird to me, like last week someone (who I don't actually know so I don't know how she heard that I do poetry) messaged me asked me to read at some charity event and I was like "woah? why do people want me to do thing???? am not good at thing???????" Who knows, man. Who knows.

Last, but not least, my other friend in the group chat said "At least Noor isn't lame" and the friend who gave the suggestions from earlier replied "Yeah Noor is super cool" and then my third friend said "If I could describe Noor in one word it would be Hella"and honestly, that's probably the biggest achievement of them all. Even though I maintain that I am pretty lame, but like, in the raddest way possible. But yeah, being not-lame (or being lame to the point of hilarity), especially in the eyes of the people who matter most to you, is what really counts, awards and trophies be damned.

(I probably have other random academic or other "normal" achievements I could think of if I tried but I think it's more fun to read about these so this is what you're getting. Peace out cub scouts.)

 Amrutha
???????????? I'm twelve. I don't have achievements???????????? Sometimes I manage to function semi-normally and I celebrate those rare days because nothing is more of an achievement to me. There are a few blue moon moments in which I make a joke which is funny and those are really the cherished moments of my life.

Like Kiersten, I'm really proud of my dance accomplishments, but more specifically, graduating from my dance school. I graduated after starting to do Indian Classical dance when I was 4 years old, so its by far the thing I have stuck by the longest and the graduation ceremony is a 3 hour solo performance and wow I just can't believe that happened. This was honestly just a fab time in my life.

Another big accomplishment for me was first semester of college I managed to weasel my way into a graduate level research project and as a freshman that was a pretty big deal for me. I just felt like college-things were really falling into place so I'm really happy about that.

To be quite honest I try not to look at mini things that I achieve (like grades or other random stuff) as achievements worth writing about because I like to reserve my pride and sense of achievement for big things that I feel are especially awesome so I don't get too content with minor stuff.

What are some of your achievements?

Life of a Blogger - Bad Habits

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Bad habits!

 Kiersten
I feel like I have a lot of bad habits that technically aren't that bad but are still pretty bad in some ways (although they can sometimes be infrequent and erratic).

One bad habit I started a few years ago and now only relapse into every once in a while is cracking my knuckles. Knuckle cracking is SO BAD for your joints! I used to do this regularly but now I only find myself doing it randomly every once in a while. Arthritis sucks so I'm trying to avoid that.

A bad habit I've recently picked up, somewhat out of stress, is biting my nails. Oh, my poor nails. The problem with my nails is that they always get snagged on something then start to break. I always get irritated when my nails are uneven because then they just keep getting stuck on everything! I always try to combat that by biting them even but it only seems to make the matter worse. Maybe someday I'll learn to carry a nail care kit with me.

This is a life long bad habit: pressing snooze on the alarm clock. I simply do not want to get out of bed at my first alarm. I actually start my alarm earlier so that I still get up when I need to because I know I'll want to snooze. That is honestly just sad and probably worse for your sleep cycle. I have been trying to actually wake up on my first alarm but since I'm usually sleep deprived at school, it's hard to break the habit.

By far my worse habit is my procrastinating. I like to sit around and read or scroll through the same posts on Facebook for hours. I also like to sleep. Sometimes I've found that I spend more time putting things off than it actually takes to do them. I'd like to say I'll stop procrastinating but I kind of feel like it's part of my personality and would be very painful to stop. I am trying to procrastinate less though!

 Marlon
*Cracks knuckles*
Ahem.

I'll start at the top: I procrastinate to absurd levels. For everything. Is a paper due in three months? I know I could do it now . . . or . . . I could wait until the night before, research it, and then write it the morning of. It has gotten to the point that I sometimes procrastinate reading books or watching TV shows by reading less stressful books or watching less stressful TV shows. I.E., when the new season of Game of Thrones comes on I will probably be watching some trashy Big Bang Theory episodes to cope.

I pretty much don't sleep. Case in point: it's 4am right now. Except this is a lie. I do sleep . . . but I sleep like all college kids. Sometimes, for twelve hours, sometimes for three.

Sometimes I will eat upwards of five thousand calories a day, sometimes I will drink a glass of water. It all depends on if I have remembered to eat.

I don't know what inside voices, pants, cleaning my room, or "going to bed" have to do with being a respectable person.

I make jokes out of bad situations because I am bad with bad situations.

I leave my toothbrush on the bathroom counter.

I'm exceptionally lazy. Beyond lazy. Very lazy. Can't finish this sentence lazy . . .can't finish this list lazy . . .

 Noor
Most of the habits I have are bad. I'm sorry. I never said I was a decent person.

One of my worst habits is my sleeping pattern, or lack thereof. It's winter break and my friends are making statements like "Wow it's going to be rough transitioning back to school after staying up until 2/3 every night." and "I cant believe I slept until noon." Meanwhile, I'm averaging a 7 AM to 3PM sleep schedule. And on the days I have plans (which for some reason ends up being a lot of them even though I don't even have friends??????) I don't even get to sleep until 3 because my friends want me to meet up at like, 2. Which means getting getting ready at 1. Which means setting an alarm for 12 to mentally prepare myself to wake up at my 12:30 alarm and shower. And also a 12:15 and 12:45 and 1:00 and 1:15 alarm just in case. And then imagine when my friends want to hang out at 1. I have to shift the process back an hour. Life is so rough, man. And when I'm in school, I sleep at 5 instead of 7. Which was fine when I had 11 AM classes every day (lol as if I slept better in high school when I had to wake up early) but now that I have a 9:30 AM twice a week and a 9:00 AM it'll be slightly worse. I might just forgo sleep and do it when I come back from class. We'll see.

Another really bad habit I have is not eating regularly. I don't do it on purpose but sometimes I'll just be chilling and look at the time and oops I haven't eaten in 30 hours. Once upon a recent times it was pretty bad, but recently it's been better, so I won't go more than a whole day without eating usually and it'll be around one or two meals a day (I mean, I don't consider two meals a day irregular, like I don't think the day is long enough to fit three entire meals in so if I eat two then it's all good, but a lot of the time I'll just eat one which is probably not good or I'll just drink something in the afternoon/eat something very small which isn't a full meal). But yeah I think a lot of it is that I live at school and so I have to physically go to the dining hall to eat and it's not even about laziness but about the fact that I'm not thinking about it so like since the food isn't in front of me I won't think about it and even though my friends usually do send the "food?" group text, usually there a bunch of those periodically since everyone has different class times and hunger times so I'm usually like "I'll eat later" (or in class) and then I just don't. I don't know, it happens. I guess the eating once a day thing isn't really the healthiest and I'm trying to stick to two food things a day so my metabolism doesn't slow down and I don't gain weight but I'm home for winter break and I wake up so late that it's dinner time so I'll see how that goes.

A habit I've carried with me throughout my school years that's gotten waaaay worse in college that Kiersten also had on her list is procrastination. In high school I'd just put things off until the night before. Senior year of high school, I started putting them off until the morning of. In college though, my procrastination game is off the charts. I've started just not starting things and not giving a glying fladoodle about the fact, not even pretending to open a word document. 1500 word paper due at 11:00 AM? Ill just start it at 9:00 AM, it'll be totally fine. Or 9:30. Maybe 10:00. Professors need to stop giving me good grades on these assignments so I'll start doing them earlier and my writing will be...writier. Wow I'm totally a Journalism major with total great command of the English language. My efforts to avoid doing assignments have reached such great heights that to even write of them gives me anxiety remembering the situations. Just ask anyone that's spent any time in my vicinity though and they'll tell you of how much of my own worst enemy I am, though.

Kiersten also mentioned this one (as will Amrutha) and it's nail biting! I bite my nails without realizing it and the most annoying part for me is that when they grow out, the grow out unevenly so my nail shape is just ugly and then I don't like the way they look so I cut them and I never have long nails but I never have long nails anyway because I bite them so it's a vicious cycle. I doubt I'll ever stop to be honest.

I feel like my section is getting really long but I just have so many things wrong with me. I also never wear my glasses. To be fair, my vision isn't actually that bad. I think my prescription is a -1.25 in one eye and a -1.00 in the other. So I can totally see fine. I mean, I also think my prescription isn't entirely accurate and might need to be stronger but I also think whatever it is still isn't that bad anyway. And I really don't like the way I look in glasses and before you mention contacts, I tried those when I was 14 and while they were fine, it was too much hassle for someone whose eyes aren't that bad and doesn't wear glasses all the time anyway. Even though I'm supposed to wear them all the time, which is why it counts as a bad habit. I used to keep them in the car when I could drive because on my license it says I have to wear them while driving (I don't) so I figured if I ever got pulled over I'd put them on, but now I'm epileptic and can't drive so that's not an issue for me. I wear them occasionally in classes or while watching movies or very seldom TV, if I have a headache, but other than that I try not to let them harsh my vibes.

Okay, this is going to be my last one, even though I could probably go on forever, and props to you if you've read all of these because I ramble a lot. This last bad habit is being inconsistent with my medication and is probably the worst technically speaking. I take epilepsy medication and I'm supposed to take it at 11:00 PM every night but a lot of the time I'm just not in my room or not home or I just forget so I end up taking it really late so the times I take it will be inconsistent and there have definitely been a few times I've forgotten to take it altogether, usually after a very tiring night. This contributes to migraines and seizures and also various other things I won't get into right now because my section is already way too long but it's generally not a fun time so it's important I'm on track with the medication. Usually I'm alright with it, but I just have to work on making sure I take everything on time and on a daily basis, which I'm trying to be better with!

 Amrutha
Do I have any habits that are even a little okay?

One of my worst habits is biting my nails, which I have been doing since I've had teeth. For some reason, I've never been able to break it, and I've tried everything. Because its a nervous habit, I never notice when I'm doing it, unless someone points it out to me. It's really sad that I bite my nails so often especially because I have literally the shortest nails out of anyone I know.

Another bad habit I have is that I have a terrible sleeping pattern, in that sometimes I'll sleep late and wake up early and sometimes I'll just sleep for like 14 hours and there really is no solid in between. Another problem is that I wake up every couple of hours and go back to sleep instinctively and I can't seem to break it.

What are some of your bad habits?

Life of a Blogger - Scars You Have

Life of a Blogger is a weekly meme hosted by Novel Heartbeat. This feature is designed to let readers and other bloggers get to know us on a more personal level by discussing non-bookish topics. This week's topic is...

Scars you have!

 Kiersten
I don't have many scars - I used to have more but they seem to be disappearing. By far, the most notable scars I've ever had were the ones I got when I used to run track at my high school. I fell one day when I was running and, since we had a concrete track, I scraped up my knees pretty badly. Those scars have since healed though. The only other scars I can find are two on my hands. One is on the back of my left hand and I think I accidentally cut my hand with scissors in elementary school but I'm not entirely sure. The other scar is on the inside of my right index finger. I have absolutely no idea how this came to be. I'm sorry that my scars are not more interesting or plentiful.

 Marlon
I have about million scars on my legs because A) I am a clumsy individual and B) skateboarding is dangerous but C) walking, along with all non-sleeping activities, are dangerous. Other than that, I have two scars above my right eye that kind of frame my right eyebrow somewhat. They're extremely faint now, but I remember the endless weeks of scabbing. I got them from running into a really thin porcelain plate my mom was walking around with. I ate a Ring Pop in the ER and cried all night. Raw as hell.

 Noor
Whenever people ask me about scars the first one I think of is the one on my left elbow that I got scraping it across the corner of the heater, which was hella sharp. It looks like stitches but it isn't which is pretty cool, although I found it more painful than interesting at the time. Another scar I have is on the underside of my right pinky toe, from when I fell up the stairs (yes, up) freshman year (I say that like it wasn't just one year ago) and split my toe open and my friends made me call EMS and even though I told them it was fine and I would deal with it, they made me go to the hospital and get three stitches (I asked for a fourth because I don't like the number three and four is my favorite number and the doctor wouldn't give it to me but I needed a fourth one anyway so sorry not sorry for making fun of him for being an intern). I also have a scar on my lip from when my dad threw the keys at me to catch, but I missed and they split my lip open. Besides that, I have a decent amount of other scars, considering I'm awful at being coordinating. I'm visiting a friend in Dallas as I type and yesterday we went somewhere and I tripped over the same speed bump both on the way inside the building and the way back to the car. We also went to the mall and I dropped something in every store. I don't know where I got a lot of my scars, but some of them include one on my left knee, a bunch on my stomach, and a few on my hands. I think not knowing about them gives them personality because they can be whoever they want. As a bonus, I also have a lot of burn marks. The one that took the longest to fade was when I jumped onto the bed in first grade and, right as my mom screamed "NO!" the hot iron fell onto my arm, which was totally burned and really painful and didn't fade for years (I think I had the iron shaped mark until sixth grade). Another burn mark I still have is from when I was curling my sisters hair a few years ago and she moved and the tip of the wand went straight into my arm, leaving a perfectly circular mark. As you can see, I'm a pretty clumsy person!

 Amrutha
Because I am literally the clumsiest person I have ever met, I have scars pretty much every where. Both my knees and elbows are littered with cuts and scrapes, from falling off bikes and cutting myself on corners and the like. Of those, my favorite is a scar on my left knee that I got falling off a curb (I'm crying about how bad I am at life). However, the scars I think about most when anyone asks me about them are the ones on my forehead and left hand. My head has a small scar at the top of my nose right between my eyebrows, coming from a rug burn from falling on an inflatable jungle gym during Project Graduation (an all night program my school hosted the night of graduation). The scar always makes me laugh because it reminds me so much of high school, that is, it was fun but certainly left some unsightly marks. The second is the scar on the back of my left hand, it is long and is easily the most distinguishable of all my scars -- I got this years ago, when I was helping my mom pull out nails from my basement wall (the people that lived here last had to have had 100+ nails in the wall), i scratched myself on one nail and the scar hasn't faded since I got it.

Do you have any scars?
