Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.
Julie Murphy
Series: Faith Herbert Origin Story, #1
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Graphic Novel
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Release Date: July 7, 2020
Goodreads
From Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin', comes the first in a two-book origin story of Faith, a groundbreaking, plus-sized superhero from the Valiant Entertainment comics. Why I want to read this book
Faith Herbert is a pretty regular teen. When she's not hanging out with her two best friends, Matt and Ches, she's volunteering at the local animal shelter or obsessing over the long-running teen drama The Grove.
So far, her senior year has been spent trying to sort out her feelings for her maybe-crush Johnny and making plans to stay close to Grandma Lou after graduation. Of course, there's also that small matter of recently discovering she can fly….
When the fictional world of The Grove crashes into Faith's reality as the show relocates to her town, she can't believe it when TV heroine Dakota Ash takes a romantic interest in her.
But her fandom-fueled daydreams aren't enough to distract Faith from the fact that first animals, then people, have begun to vanish from the town. Only Faith seems able to connect the dots to a new
Why do I want to read this? Let me list the ways:
- Julie Murphy wrote it. I like Murphy, and have enjoyed her books. She has impressed me with both her YA releases (Dumplin', Puddin', Ramona Blue) and her middle grade book, Dear Sweet Pea.
- Superheroes are a hot commodity. Right now, we can all use a hero to root for.
- A plus-sized superhero! I was just talking about plus-sized visibility last week, and Julie Murphy is an OwnVoices author, who always gives good rep. I also don't believe we have too many books about overweight superheroes, so, YEAH!
I trust that Murphy will deliver a story that is sweet and charming, and will delight me.

Becca Hanson was never able to make sense of the real world. When her best friend Charlotte died, she gave up on it altogether. Fortunately, Becca can count on her books to escape—to other times, other places, other people…Why I want to read this book
Until she meets Max Herrera. He’s experienced loss, too, and his gorgeous, dark eyes see Becca the way no one else in school can.
As it turns out, kissing is a lot better in real life than on a page. But love and life are a lot more complicated in the real world…and happy endings aren’t always guaranteed.
I love, loved, LOVED Love and Other Unknown Variables, so I was excited to hear it had a companion. I went out, and bought the book, and then obviously, never read it. Aside from the fact, that I wanted to get back to this world, I also want to be with Becca as she grieves the loss of her friend. I am actually crying a bit as I remember Charlotte, so I anticipate tears, but also something wonderful for Becca.

NEW JULIE MURPHY!!!! Yay!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that you are featuring "old" new books as well. I mean, we pick up a book because we're excited to read it, right? Even if it's not a new release!
I paired CWW with backlog to force myself to read one backlist book a week. So far, I have stuck to it. I know there was one I set aside, but it was more a me, not the book sort of situation. My head just needed something super light.
DeleteFaith! Oh, I love that cover -- and Faith sounds utterly lovely and relatable!
ReplyDeleteThe cover is great! And, I am excited to find out all about Faith
DeleteFaith sounds like an entertaining read.
ReplyDeleteMurphy usually writes a great story and her characters have fantastic personalities.
DeleteThe Julie Murphy book sounds wonderful! I recently read Dumplin' and watched the Netflix movie, loved both, and am looking forward to reading more from her. I love the idea of a plus-sized superhero and I've also been saying I want to try reading some graphic novels, so this might be a good place to start. Great picks this week!
ReplyDeleteThat adaptation, though not exactly like the book, was fantastic! I had tears in my eyes by the end of the movie, and was all pumped up. Loved it! I have dabbled in graphic novels, recently reading Almost American Girl and I borrowed Sticks and Scones from the library (I love this series)
DeleteThe Julie Murphy sounds so wonderful! I love that cover!
ReplyDeleteMurphy is a go-to for me at this point. I have enjoyed all her books
DeleteI have a lot of old new books. LOL These are both new to me.
ReplyDeleteFeaturing one old book per week and committing to read it has helped me make a dent in my backlist.
DeleteI love the premise for Faith:Taking Flight! Faith sounds like a superhero I would just adore and for for! Life After Juliet sounds like it will be emotional and so good too. I’ll have to check out Love and Other Unknown Variables.
ReplyDeleteLove and Other Unknown Variables was so good. Bittersweet, but beautiful.
DeleteI've heard really good things about Life After Juliet. I think I planned to read it, but forgot about it. I hope you love it!
ReplyDeleteYeah! It's older, so I don't remember much about it, but I wasted to read it, because I loved the companion so much
DeleteFaith looks like a really cool read! I hope you get your hands on it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't request it, because not all the e-versions of graphic novels are user friendly. I hope, when it comes up, it has the pop up windows, because I really want to read it.
DeleteJust the cover of Faith: Taking Flight makes me want to stand up and cheer! A teenage plus-size superhero? YES! *fist pump*
ReplyDeleteRight? And, if anyone could do a plus sized hero justice, it's julie murphy
DeleteFaith is on my TBR as well. Great picks!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my Wednesday post
Hope you enjoy it when you read it
DeleteLife After Juliet sounds really good!
ReplyDeleteThe companion broke me in a good way, and I wouldn't mind catching up with the characters
DeleteNo I won't LOOK at this! I have already ordered too many books because of you sam! LOL
ReplyDeleteYou slay me!
DeleteOoh nice picks! Both are new to me ones but I've been seeing a bit of Murphy's book around lately. Hope you love them both!
ReplyDeleteHere's my WoW
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
I don't know if we have had any plus sized YA hero books. I am curious
DeleteLife After Juliet sounds like it's going to be such a touching story.
ReplyDeleteI am preparing for all the feels
DeleteJulie Murphy really seems to be bringing it for plus girl rep and I am digging that cover! I never had much interest in Dumplin or Puddin but this one sounds more up my alley. As does Life After Juliet... I hope these will both be wonderful reads for you.
ReplyDeleteMurphy is a big OwnVoices author. She writes about big girls and she wrote about a bi girl, because those are parts of who she is. I like what she brings to her stories. The insight and personal experiences make them that much better.
DeleteJulie Murphy is an author that I really love as well. Faith just sounds like it is going to be fantastic and empowering. The graphic novel format is exciting as well. I hope that we both love it. :)
ReplyDeleteI like her humor, and her characters always end up winning a way into my heart
DeleteI love the chubby superhero! I was a chubby teen and never saw fat characters in books, unless they were a joke.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Exactly! That's why I love that Murphy always features plus-sized characters in her books
DeleteFaith sounds great! I enjoy super hero, as well as #ownvoices stories! Great pick Sam :)
ReplyDeleteLindy@ A Bookish Escape
And, Murphy does these stories well too. I am very excited about Faith
DeleteThese are both new to me and I think that they both sound great. I haven't read either of these authors although I would really like to. I hope you enjoy them and look forward to your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Alexander wrote too many books, but Murphy is fairly popular in the YA world.
DeleteI love the Faith Taking Flight cover! Plus sized heroes are something we're in short supply of so I hope it's a good read!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely in short supply.
DeleteI'm waiting on Amazon to send me the newest Grady Hendrix book and the new Murderbot novel!
ReplyDeleteNothing like some horror to get your blood pumping. Hope it's fantastic!
DeleteI read Julie Houser's Faith comics and loved them. I read Dumplin' and loved that. So, I have a feeling I'll love this Faith origin story. Bring it on! Thanks for bringing this book to my attention.
ReplyDeleteI just googled. I had no idea Faith was based on a comic. I thought she was new. Huh. Look at that. Thanks for letting me know Faith has been out there saving the world.
