The Bold Type has quickly become one of my new favorite shows. I have heard it described as a younger version of Sex in the City, and I totally can see the comparison. It's first season is almost over, and all I have to say is:
This show follows three best friends - Jane, Kat, and Sutton, as they navigate their careers, love lives, and anything else that gets thrown at them. The most important thing in this show, is that they never have to deal with any of those things by themselves. Each of these woman have faced some big decisions, and I loved seeing them not have to explore all their options in isolation. These women support each other, and prop each other when necessary. They know each other so well, that they know when to lend a hand and when to retreat. It's so nice to see a strong female friendship take center stage on a show, which also highlights women's issues.
I read more books, than I watch TV, so I want to share some books that also celebrate female friendships.

Now it's your turn!
What are some of your favorite fictional female friendships?
Let us know in the comments!
I just started watching this show this week. I love it!! Love the female friendship themes. I have Nothing to read and hope I like it.
ReplyDeleteHave you watched episode 6, The Breast Issue, yet? That one was super powerful for me because of one of the plot lines. Nothing was very cute, and I liked the friendship on it, because this is a younger YA book, so the relationship is going through those changes that are common at that age. I thought it was well done.
DeleteI haven't heard of that show, but it looks great. I agree 100% I love books/shows that support women friendship in a positive way. You should always have friends that you can lean on during important life decisions. I enjoyed reading Vampire Academy series I think that also had a lot of uplifting female friendship. Great topic!
ReplyDeleteI don't watch a ton of TV, but this show won me over, and I find myself looking forward to seeing it each week. I think it is important to show that there are women who have successful and strong friendships. It's good to balance out all the girl on girl hate that is often highlighted in books, TV, movies.
DeleteI haven't heard of this show. I really don't watch TV much at all so that isn't surprising. I do enjoy a good friendship as a part of a story. I can think of a few historical romances but I am blanking on friendships in ya books.
ReplyDeleteI only watch a few shows a week, but this is one of them. It is the way I like my books, fun with a lot of heart.
DeleteI haven't seen that show, but I love strong female friendships in stories. Nora Roberts has some great ones! For example: The Bride Quartet series ~Aleen
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendation. I have been wanting to read a Roberts novel, but I had no idea where to start (she has a billion).
DeleteAww this sounds SO good! I loooove strong female friendships in books! There are certainly never enough of them, I always love when I see them. I cheated and flat out searched my own blog for "female friendships" and here is what I have come up with:
ReplyDeleteIron Cast, Titans, Under a Painted Sky, Three Dark Crowns, The Forbidden Wish... that is a sad, small number tbh.
Maybe it's not your blog, but rather not enough books feature positive female friendships. I feel like I am starting to see more and more great female friendships in YA in the same way there are more books with present and actually great parents.
DeleteI never realized, until now, how few genuine female friendships there are in the books I usually read. The only one I could come up with (besides VA) was the Crossbreed Series By Dannika Dark C:
ReplyDeleteI think Mead does a good job with female friendships (The Glittering Court, VA, and Bloodlines), and there are a lot of books that include "squads" that have females with close friendships (The Shadowhunter books, ACOTAR come to mind). I am happy that I am seeing more and more of them versus the mean girl or frienemy thing.
DeleteI am really loving this show, too. I especially liked the snarky comments in last week's show about how "45" took over the downtown area for his own use.
ReplyDeleteI really like this show for the way it puts women and women's issues in the spotlight. It shows women being independent, being successful, and being able to accomplish it without making a man the main focus of their lives.
