Review: How to Keep Rolling After a Fall - Karole Cozzo

How to Keep Rolling
After a Fall
Karole Cuzzo
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Reading Challenges: #ContRom2017, #DiverseReads2017, Shelf Love

Nikki made a mistake. Nikki stood by and allowed her friends to post photos to her Facebook account with the intention of publicly shaming one of their classmates. Her house. Her party. Her account. Nikki is the sole culprit in the eyes of the school and is expelled. But it's not over. Her father won't look her in the eye, her mother doesn't trust her, and she is an outcast at her new school. All seems hopeless, until she meets Pax, a wheelchair rugby player with a contagious smile and a forgiving heart. This is a second chance Nikki cannot pass up.

I loved Cuzzo's last book, How to Say I Love You Out Loud, and I had great expectations for this book. Once again, Cuzzo delivered a beautiful story laced with some pain, life lessons, and lots of love.

I was reading the reader letter at the end of the book, and found Cuzzo's argument for why she chose to write about the aggressor of a bullying incident versus the victim quite interesting, and I am glad to chose to write about Nikki, because this challenged me as a reader. Thanks to Cuzzo's ability to craft characters, I did grow to care deeply for Nikki, and though I understand that silence is acceptance, I still felt like the situation was unjust. Nikki's excommunication was severe. She paid the price over and over and over again until Pax. Pax believed in second chances, and allowed Nikki to redeem herself. Everyone should be so lucky to have a Pax in their lives.
"'I'm a firm believer in new beginnings. Looking back all the time...It really starts to hurt your neck.' He shrugs carelessly. 'If you don't want to be defined by your past, you shouldn't have to be.'"
And now for my favorite part of the story - Pax. This guy was the stuff that book boyfriends are made of. He was Nikki's champion, compassionate, patient, understanding, giving, and generally looked on the brighter side. It was a hard fought journey from his post-accident self to where he was in this story, but he was getting to that place of acceptance. He was accepting that his old life was gone, and he was helping Nikki get there too.
"'With all due respect, sir,' Pax begins quietly, maintaining eye contact all the while, 'did you love her because she was flawless, or did you love her because you loved her?'"
And what's a Swoon Reads without the swoon. I am feeling so many emotions trying to describe the joy I felt as the romance between Pax and Nikki blossomed. Pax rolled in as Nikki was receiving another public tongue lashing. He gave her comfort and friendship, but he did not anticipate what evolved from there. This relationship had some bumps, which was probably very realistic. Pax was a paraplegic, and this came with other medical issues, as well as, limitations due to how the rest of the world isn't necessarily accessible. I appreciated that Cuzzo showed us that other side of Pax, and gave us some insight into the affects this had on his relationships. But in the end, they were beautiful together.
"We kiss and we kiss, and every now and again, my legs bob forward, grazing his, or float out behind me, useless and unimportant. Legs don't matter anymore. Pax's arms are enough to keep me afloat."
At the end of this story, Nikki was not the same girl she was "before". She had grown and change, and this metamorphosis was due to Pax. He was able to help her see things differently, and nurtured her and challenged her, as she grew and changed.
"The literal translation of Pax, I learned, is peace."
Once again, Cuzzo delivers an impactful story, that doesn't gloss over the issues. She shows the good, the bad, and the ugly side, but still manages to leave me with a story that leaves my heart bursting with joy.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on My Spring TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This weeks topic is...

Top Ten Books on My Spring TBR

Happy Pi Day! I have a TBR, that if written out, would reach from here to the Great Wall. Needless to say, it was a difficult task picking ten for this list. It kind of reads like a list of Waiting on Wednesday posts, and I don't own most of these books. However, I will do everything in my power to try and read these books.

A Court of Wings and Ruin
Sarah J. Maas
Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3
Publisher: Bloomsbury Childrens Books

This is one of my favorite SFF series. I know, I don't read a lot of SFF, but this one is just incredible, and the ending of ACOMAF! I needed this book like ten seconds after I finished ACOMAF. Therefore, this book has the HIGHEST priority on my Spring TBR.

Eliza and Her Monsters
Francesca Zappia
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Goodreads

This was one of my WoWs for a myriad of reasons. First and foremost: cover lust (I know, I am shallow). That cover is a thing of beauty, and it is my understanding that there will be more amazing artwork in the book. The story also sounds amazing, and I suspect, this will be a book I could love.

Avenged
Amy Tintera
Series: Ruined, #2
Publisher: HarperTeen
Goodreads

Tintera won me over with Ruined. I was totally swept away by Tintera's storytelling, and I found myself so invested in the characters. There was magic, battles, action, romance, and just an overall great story. Oh, there was a cliffy too. So, I think it's obvious why I need to this book!

Royal Bastards
Andrew Shvarts
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Goodreads

True story: This was one the first (and few) digital ARC rejections I received. Nonetheless, I still really want to read this book. This title was one of my TTT: 2017 Debuts I'm Excited For, and I am still excited. All the buzz has been good, and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun. Hoopla gets a lot of Disney titles, so hopefully, it will get this one too, guaranteeing I read it.

Windfall
Jennifer E. Smith
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Goodreads

This book was also one of my Wows. Jennifer E. Smith is one of my favorite contemporary authors. Her books always leave me feeling happy, warm, and fuzzy. The biggest reason I want to read this book is because she wrote it. The premise also appears to have the promise of being super cute, though, interestingly enough, another of my warm-fuzzy-authors (Kasie West) has a book coming out with a lottery win involved. I am interested in seeing how each author spins that plot.

Lord of Shadows
Cassandra Clare
Series:The Dark Artifices, #2
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Goodreads

This one is simple: I just MUST read this book. I was a later reader of the Shadowhunter books, but once I started, I just plowed right through them all. I love this world, and CC gave us such a wonderful cast in this next generation of Shadowhunters in this series. I love the Blackthorns so much, I am still holding out for them adopting me into the family. As part of a series, I obviously want to read this book, because I have to find out what happens next. I was so upset after the ending of Lady Midnight. I know Clare must be inflicting all this heartache on me for a reason, and fingers crossed, I get some answers (and resolution?) in this book.

Once and For All
Sarah Dessen
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Goodreads

I want to read this book pretty much for the same reasons that I want to read Windfall. It is written by another of my happy-warm-fuzzy authors. Sarah Dessen books always leave me feeling contented. She writes contemporary YA romances with just the right amount of angst, humor, and drama. I know when I pick up one of her books, it will leave me purring like a cat.

More of Me
Kathryn Evans
Publisher: Amulet Books
Goodreads

This is an SFF book with a very intriguing concept. The MC, Teva, has a genetic anomaly, which produces a clone herself every year. Each year, the "new" Teva takes control of the life, but now, the current Teva wants to keep her life and will battle the new clone for control. Sounds interesting, right? I am also on a big push to read debut authors, because I want to say I was there at the beginning when they blow up. *Grins*

Words in Deep Blue
Cath Crowley
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Goodreads

This one has been on my radar for a while, and I was ecstatic when I was approved for this ARC. A few awesome things: a book about books, love letters, and second chances. I love books, I love love, and any story with second chances always keep that fire of hope alive in my heart.

Always and Forever, Lara Jean
Jenny Han
Series: To All the Boys I've Loved Before, #3
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Goodreads

I am sort of nervous about this one. I adore this series, and cannot wait to be back in the swing of things with the Song sisters, but I am terrified that Han is going to sink my ship. She keeps putting Lara Jean and Peter in stormy seas, and he really was my favorite the whole time. Fingers crossed!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. This post is for sharing what I read last week, what I am currently reading, and what I plan to read.

What I Read Last Week

This was a stupendous reading week. I pretty much read all contemporary romances with the exception of I See You (suspense/thriller), but they were all quite entertaining. My favorite, by far, was Alex, Approximately. It was just the stuff that great YA books are made of. I was happy to finally get to my March Diverse Reading Challenge. The challenge was to read a book where the main character has a disability. I selected How to Keep Rolling After a Fall, because the male MC is a paraplegic, and also because I have had this book since last summer (signed nonetheless). Cuzzo delivered another wonderful story, and is quickly working her way into my shortlist. I was really proud of myself, because I read all but one of the books I had planned on reading. Yeah me!

What I Am Currently Reading

I am currently reading Black Ice, which is the final book in the Stark Springs series, and listening to Get Even. I am struggling a little with Get Even. Maybe it's too angsty for me. Not sure, but I will keep on listening.

What I Plan to Read

I plan to read The Girl with the Red Balloon for my Monthly Motif reading challenge. This month, we were tasked with reading a book set in a different dimension or which involves time traveling. In this book, a girl time travels via a red balloon (surprise!) All kidding aside, it sound interesting, and involves helping people escape from East Berlin to West Germany, which is something my relatives were involved with back in the day.  I am looking forward to Managed, as I am a total fan of Kristen Callihan's books, and I really enjoyed the first book in this rock star series. And yes, I am going to attempt to read When Dimple Met Rishi. Hopefully I get to it this week.

Review: Secrets of a Reluctant Princess - Casey Griffin

Secrets of a Reluctant Princess
Casey Griffin
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Goodreads
Reading Challenges: #ContRom2017

ABOUT THE BOOK
At Beverly Hills High, you have to be ruthless to survive…

Adrianna Bottom always wanted to be liked. But this wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. Now, she’s in the spotlight…and out of her geeky comfort zone. She’ll do whatever it takes to turn the rumor mill in her favor—even if it means keeping secrets. So far, it’s working.

Wear the right clothes. Say the right things. Be seen with the right people.

Kevin, the adorable sketch artist who shares her love of all things nerd, isn’t exactly the right people. But that doesn’t stop Adrianna from crushing on him. The only way she can spend time with him is in disguise, as Princess Andy, the masked girl he’s been LARPing with. If he found out who she really was, though, he’d hate her.

The rules have been set. The teams have their players. Game on.

REVIEW

Adrianna thought she was getting a fresh start. A new city. A new school. A new look. She thought that if she shed the "Andy" parts of herself and played a better social game, that things could be different. As she worked harder towards avoiding becoming a social outcast, she began to lose parts of herself. Those missing parts were found every Sunday, when she would go LARPing. When Adrianna donned her mask, she became Princess Andy, and this princess was closer to her true self than the Porcelain Princess ever would be.

I found this book to be a very sweet and endearing look at how difficult it can be to be your true self. Andy's struggle was a typical one for many teens, but I appreciated that Griffin did not turn her into an angsty mess. Sometimes you want angst, sometimes you want light and breezy. I was in for some lighter fair today, and the drama level was exactly to my liking.

Griffin assembled a fine cast of supporting characters to help Adrianna find her way back to Andy. Among them was the geeky but awesome Kevin. Kevin was the opposite of "Adrianna". He unabashedly let his freak flag fly, and was a relatively happy guy. There were so many adorable interactions between Kevin and Andy, I couldn't help but jump on that ship. Another standout in the cast was Kevin's sister, Keelie. How do you not adore a girl who is true to her self, speaks her mind, and protects those she loves with the ferocity of a lion?

But alas, my favorite parts of this book were the LARPing parts. Griffin did a great job with all the LARPing sequences. She had me googling to learn more and wanting to fabricate a boffer so I could join in the fun. These scenes were so much fun to read, and added an extra element of enjoyment for me. What can I say? I love geeky things.

Overall: Super adorable and fun read which appealed to my geekier side.

Stuffed Animal Saturday: Alex, Approximately - Jenn Bennett

Stuffed Animal Saturday is a meme that we post here at We Live and Breathe Books to showcase the book we're currently reading with one of our favorite stuffed animals and discuss our stuffed animal's opinion (well, it's really our opinion, but that's besides the point). We hope you enjoy our quirky feature as much as we enjoy writing it!

We have been cleaning up around here lately in preparation for a move, and I found this box filled with these little amigurumi. I used to love to crochet these odd little dolls, but alas, my carpal tunnel has stolen that from me. Anyhow, piggy was one of my creations and this Saturday, piggy and I are reading Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett .

Blurb from Goodreads:
In this delightfully charming teen spin on You’ve Got Mail, the one guy Bailey Rydell can’t stand is actually the boy of her dreams—she just doesn’t know it yet.

Classic movie buff Bailey “Mink” Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online by “Alex.” Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush.

Faced with doubts (what if he’s a creep in real life—or worse?), Bailey doesn’t tell Alex she’s moved to his hometown. Or that she’s landed a job at the local tourist-trap museum. Or that she’s being heckled daily by the irritatingly hot museum security guard, Porter Roth—a.k.a. her new arch-nemesis. But life is whole lot messier than the movies, especially when Bailey discovers that tricky fine line between hate, love, and whatever-it-is she’s starting to feel for Porter.

And as the summer months go by, Bailey must choose whether to cling to a dreamy online fantasy in Alex or take a risk on an imperfect reality with Porter. The choice is both simpler and more complicated than she realizes, because Porter Roth is hiding a secret of his own: Porter is Alex…Approximately.

So far:

Bailey has been sharing her love of old films online with "Alex" for about a year, when he strongly encourages her to come West for a beach viewing of North by Northwest. This is not a wholly irrational request, as Bailey's dad lives in the same Cali town as her online "film-buff soul mate". As any intelligent person would, Bailey has kept some identifying details of her life secret from Alex. One big thing he doesn't know is that she moved across the country to live with her father, and is now residing in Alex's hometown. She is worried that Alex IRL is not the same as Alex online, so she is on a quest to find him before the North by Northwest viewing event.

I already love Bailey. There is just something about her personality and her voice that is perfect for me. There is also the whole evader thing that we share. I, too, abhor confrontation and love old films. Other things I like:

  • I like how every chapter wraps with part of an online chat between @mink (Bailey) and @alex. It's a little bit of a contrast to her real life persona, and can be quite revealing with respect to the story.
  • Each chapter also ends with a film quote. So far, they have all been excellent choices.
  • I am loving all the movie references in general. I love old films. AMC and TCM are two of my favorite cable stations, and if you have not seen any of the films mentioned, you may consider watching them, as they are excellent.
I should finish this book today, and keep an eye out for my review closer to the book's April 4th release date.
