My Week in Review
Happy Sunday! I hope August is off to a great start for you. The last two weeks of July were so lovely, I almost forgot it was summer....until August. I just keep thinking that there are almost 2 months of summer left. 😭
My life is dull, and my personal life was uneventful as always. It's going to be a while until I actually do anything.

Stacking the Shelves
Aside from downloading a bunch of freebies, I purchased a book from my TBR that was deeply discounted - Messenger Cat Cafe. I also downloaded a read-now book because I love Emma Lord. I got a bunch of invites that were very much outside of my reading realm except Rabbit, Rabbit but I had already been approved on Netgalley for that one (LOVE JES!).
I don't really request a lot of books any longer, but I did submit a request for the new Mallory Marlowe book. I was really disappointed to be rejected since I greatly enjoyed her previous books. I don't even try for HUGE authors, but now, I am not even getting the smaller authors. *ho, hum*

Read Last Week
I think I mentioned on my midyear tag that I might not do July's Easy Reading Challenge prompt. The prompt was to give an author a second chance, and I am super unforgiving it seems. Well, I was scrolling through Goodreads, and saw that my daughter added a book to her TBR. I asked her about it, and she thought it looked good. I had a widget for the book but was not going to download because I had read the author's debut which was fine but nothing out of this world for me. With my daughter's endorsement, I downloaded Fossil Feud, and it was one of my highest rated books this week.
As a STEM girl, I love books that feature science, and this one actually had quite a bit. It was paleontology which is not my area of expertise but still very interesting to read about. I thought the hero was fantastic, and I appreciated the heroine's drive and grit. Really liked it!
I also enjoyed Now Is Not the Time to Panic. This is my third book by Wilson which I have enjoyed. His stories are always a little weird but contain so much keen insight.

I'm so glad that little fluffball found a home despite his health issues. If only we were as much willing to welcome our fellow humans when they have a disability.

It's a mystery...I'm not even sure we can blame BookTok at this point. One year I got ALL the Seanan McGuire ARCs, the year after I went back to being unworthy. Then again, NG UK is often kind to me, like when they approved me for the latest Courtney Gould...Also, despite my blog's name, it seems to me that I tend to be approved for adult books more than I do for YA ones.
When I was reading young adult almost exclusively, I couldn't get any invites. Now, I get plenty, but I don't want them. LOL! I honestly don't request many books because I hate rejection. Always stings, but I am happy when I can get a book I really want.

ReplyDeleteWe have had plenty of rain, but I am hoping we don't get any more really hot days. It's 80s with one or two days in the low 90s (which is expected in these parts). The last two weeks were such a lovely gift.

ReplyDeleteMessenger Cat Cafe sounds interesting. I seem to read a lot of cozy/Japanese books and find them disappointing. But I'm willing to try them as long as they are available at my library.

I vibe well with the Japanese lit. I am good with a quiet slice of life story that is cozy and character driven. I have been loving all the translated works. But, yeah, at least I have books, and I have been finding some great ones too.
Deleteit's going to be hot here until October. I don't request a lot of books anymore either. Some I get and some I don't.
ReplyDeleteI would not be able to live out west with you. I am not built for a desert climate. Though, I am not built for winter in the NE either. LOL
DeleteLOL I always feel like as soon as September 1 hits, summer is over! Uneventful can be good sometimes, but I do hope you find something fun to do, if you want!
ReplyDeleteI think we tend to mark the end and beginning of the school year as summer, but I got by the seasonal calendar which has summer until almost the end of Sept. UGH!!
DeleteI can't believe we're not halfway through summer. I'm already eager for fall. I don't request very often anymore either, but I get rejected here and there, too. It does smart but then I remind myself that I'll just request from the library and I don't have to write a review! Win!
ReplyDeleteI am ok with being halfway through the summer 😂 I have been reading some great fall books, and they are getting me excited. I can get most of the books I want to read from the library but not all. Sometimes I watch for sales, and then maybe I will buy the ebook.
DeleteI rescued all my dogs and I feel very passionate about rescues!! My parents only got dogs from breeders, and as a kid, I didn't know how bad it was. August and September are usually so miserable. Its hot and dry so everything just feels like an oven.
