Top Ten Tuesday - Outside My Comfort Zone

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Outside My Comfort Zone!

Happy Tuesday! Today we are talking about going outside our reading comfort zone. I must admit, I really don't like to do this because time is so precious to me. I hate to waste it on books that could be total stinkers. I wouldn't say these books were 100% outside my zone, but they did have some element that I normally would avoid because those types of books do not typically work for me.

The books below had the following elements that I struggle with, but the authors did a great job and posed no issue to me in these instances.
  • Historical fiction
  • Dark subject matter
  • Political storyline
  • Literary fiction
  • Middle grades (not an age group I read much of)
  • Heavy subject matter
  • A LOT of drama

  1. The Library of Lost Dollhouses by Elise Hooper
  2. Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
  3. The Summer We Ran by Audrey Ingram
  4. Zorrie by Laird Hunt
  5. Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts
  1. Half a Chance by Cynthia Lord
  2. The Bright Years by Sarah Damoff
  3. A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote
  4. The Favorites by Layne Fargo
  5. Life Hacks for a Little Alien by Alice Franklin

  1. I feel like there's not much outside my comfort zone? I'll read almost anything, if it sounds interesting! The Favorites is one I want to get to soon.

    1. That book was compulsively readable. High drama with a great format. I hope you get a chance to check it out.

  3. Yes, I don’t like to waste my time on something I may not like either. Assistant to the Villain is one I’d like to read, but I don’t think it’s outside of my comfort zone.

    1. It was funny. My daughter kept updating me on how far she was in the story and they still hadn't kissed. HA!

  4. I don't know why I keep forgetting about The Favorites cos it was a title that I was really keen to get my hands on! Perhaps cos I still haven't got my hands on a copy yet 🤭 I've also heard a lot about The Bright Years and I think I'd like to give it a try :) Great list, Sam!

    1. The Favorites was so good. I am always excited for a mixed format kind of book, and I loved the docu-style. I listened to the audio and it was great. The Bright Years is heartbreaking but wonderful.
