It's the end of the year, and that means BEST OF lists! I find this task difficult, but I enjoy it so much.

Cover Love!
I have always been upfront about what a cover-ho I am. The cover of a book is so important to me, and will be one of the things, that make me take a closer look. This was illustrated covers were EVERYWHERE! And, I found my favorite covers all seemed to fall into this category, but they also did a nice job of capturing the tone of the story or actually featuring something of significance to the book. And, not only did I love the covers, I loved these books!
- Our Wayward Fate by Gloria Chao
- Color Me In by Natasha Diaz
- The Beauty of the Moment by Tanaz Bhathena
- Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E. Smith
- Like a Love Story by Abdi Nazemian
- Technically, You Started It by Lana Wood Johnson
- A Constellation of Roses by Miranda Asebedo
- Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz
- Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan
- Lucky Caller by Emma Mills

So many gorgeous covers! I really like Our Wayward Fate and A Constellation of Roses.
ReplyDeleteThose two are probably the most different, since almost all are illustrated, as the trend dictates, and maybe that's what made them stand out
DeleteThere is nothing better than a gorgeous cover for a book that is a great read!
ReplyDeleteI will admit, I am a cover snob, and it's shallow, but I have been known to pass over books with bad covers, unless a trusted source urged me to give it a try
DeleteYou're right, illustrated covers were everywhere and are gorgeous -- I can't take my eyes off Colour me In -- i love that!
ReplyDeleteI won't say I don't like them, but they first started being used for lighter, rom-coms, and now, they are every where, and they don't necessarily "fit" the weight of the story. Maybe it's me. That cover for Color Me In is a great representation of the story, so it really appealed to me too
DeleteCover Ho's united!
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely the year of illustrated covers.
I love Sick Kids in Love, Lucky Caller, and A Constellation of Roses!
*high five* I didn't realize how many books with Illustrated covers I read, until I was putting this post together. When I saw the cover for Lucky Caller, I was thrown, because all Emma Mills' books had covers with the same sort of feel, but then, they redid all her covers to be illustrated. Same with Katie Cotugno and SK Ali. I like the new covers, but I liked the old ones too.
DeleteI love the cover of Hot Dog Girl. I’m considering reading that book just because the cover makes me laugh.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
When I first saw the cover for Hot Dog Girl, it made me smile. It shows the park, which is central to the story, as well as the different characters, who play roles in the tale. I liked the book. I found the MC amusing. She was little self-centered, but she grew, and it had a very sweet romance too.
Deletehot dog girl...lol what a great title and cover

I had a great time reading that book. The theme park setting was used really well.
DeleteI like the Lucky Caller cover, but I'm sad she deviated from the style of her past covers.
ReplyDeleteDid you see, they redid ALL her covers to be illustrated.
DeleteColor Me In almost made it on my list as well! Great picks!

It's a really beautiful cover. Both literal and abstract, while still being tied to the actual story
DeleteI agree that illustrated covers are becoming really popular, but I also really like them!
ReplyDeleteSo popular! I do like them too, but they feel odd to me, when they are used for weightier books. They seem too whimsical for that
DeleteI'm a cover-ho too in the worst way, and I do like a good illustrated cover, I must say. Our Wayward Fate is nice, and that Hot Dog Girl cover is fun!
ReplyDeleteWayward Fate was just a nice cover until I read the story, and then recognized the background as the park which played a big role in the story. It's also beautiful with the lighting and framing. Hot Dog Girl really did it's job, because I get such a sense of Lou's (hot dog girl) personality via that cover
DeleteI haven't read any of these books but have to admit that the covers are awesome!
ReplyDeleteAll very lovely and eye catching, and I am glad the stories within lived up to the wonderful covers
DeleteI see your jam is typography Sam!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely an important part of it, but I also like when the covers have something to do with the actual story. I think I read too much romance, where they just tend to slap a fitness model or couple on the cover, so I really enjoy figuring out the connection of the cover elements to the story
DeleteI love the illustrated cover trend, and a good cover really is important. I still need to read Sick Kids in Love!

Same. I think they are lovely, though, I don't like when they are used for weightier books. Those covers say light and fluffy to me. If you can get access to Sick Kids - read it. You will not be disappointed. I did hear the audio is a bit confusing, when it switches to the Sick Girl column, if you elect to listen vs. read.
DeleteI love the illustrated covers too. They are just always so eye catching. Color Me In is fantastic and I also really love Like a Love Story.
ReplyDeleteLike a Love Story is so beautiful, and I love that it features NYC and the three MCs, and the colors the artist chose to highlight were relevant in the story too
DeleteThese are all SO pretty! Lucky Caller, Color Me In, and A Constellation of Roses are my favorites but they're all fabulous picks!
ReplyDeleteDid you see all the Emma Mills covers have been redone to match Lucky Caller. I always loved her covers, but the new ones are great too
DeleteYes, I really like the cover of Technically, You Started It. It was a pretty cute read too. :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed that book so much more than I expected. I started reading and just could not stop.
DeleteI think Like a Love Story is my favourite cover of your favourites! The covers I am really loving lately are the illustrated fantasy YA covers we are generally getting these days :D
ReplyDeleteThere are some really good fantasy covers out there. I love the ones for The Blood of Stars series. They are stunning, and I like the way the two books look together too.
