Book Besties!
I have read many books and "met" many characters, some of whom, I would love as a friend. A few qualities I look for in a friend are: loyalty, generosity, and a good sense of humor. Many of my favorite characters possess these qualities, and below are a few I would be honored to have as a friend. I am trying to focus on newer books, but there are a few oldies in there, because I adore them too much to leave them out.
- Lara Jean from To All the Boys I've Loved Before - LJ is one of my all-time favorites. She was just so real and grounded. She loved her family with all her heart, and would keep me in baked goods.
- Weston from 100 Days of Sunlight by Abbie Emmons - Weston was just so optimistic, and that's something I need more of in my life. He was all about seeing the glass half full, and he also was all about being the best brother he could be.
- Oscar from Night Music by Jenn Marie Thorne - I took an instant liking to Oscar from his first on page appearance, and my fondness for him only grew throughout the book. He was fun and witty and wildly talented. I just wanted to bask in his greatness.
- Sweetie from There's Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon - Sweetie was fab-u-lous! She was a dutiful daughter, straight A student, star athlete, amazing singer, and loyal friend. She was, in a word, effervescent, and I loved getting to know her.
- Aphra from We Are the Perfect Girl by Ariel Kaplan - Aphra, how I adored thee! I loved her bravado and her can do attitude. She was smart, witty, and funny, and often left me in stitches. But, Aphra was also a young woman trying to not let the beauty standard get her down, and there were times it did, but she pushed through and remembered there was more to her than how she looked.
- Holland from A Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren - Here was a person, who had to put up with endless criticism just so she can play the game she loves.
- Vera from This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills - I loved Vera's lust for life and how once she claimed you, she would stand by your side and fight for you.
- Jack from Hope and Other Punch Lines by Julie Buxbaum - It's always good to have someone in your life, who supports you, but also keeps you in check. Jack was one of those friends. He was also fun and fabulous and stole every scene he was in.
- Kimi from I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn - Kimi was fantastic! She was charming, smart, funny, and talented, oh so, talented. I loved her passion for fashion, and her zeal for discovering new things.
- Zora from Truly Madly Royally by Debbie Rigaud - I sort of insta-loved Zora. She grabbed my attention with her sharp wit and humor, but kept me there with her drive, ambition, and huge giving heart. Her love and personal investment in her community was touching and inspiring, and she was someone, who could teach us all a lot about giving back.
Who is one of you book besties?

Book besties? Well I'm with you onLara Jean mostly because I want her baked goods! I always like the idea of baking but I am far too lazy so I would love a friend to do the work and share them with. I mean I struggle to remember about characters for too long after finishing a book. I would probably want all the sarcastic folks as my friend just because they are my people.
ReplyDeleteI miss my daughter for many reasons, but one big one is her cooking and baking. She enjoys doing it, and I enjoy eating all the goodies. The characters are the most important part of a book for me. I think I talk about them the most in all my reviews. A book could have zero plot, and I would love it, if the characters endeared themselves to me.
DeleteLara Jean! I love her! I've been um-ing and ah-ing about Sweetie, but I think I could definitely use some effervescence in my reading life!
ReplyDeleteSweetie ran deeper, than I originally anticipated, and I liked that she bucked the social norms.
DeleteGotta treasure Lara Jane for the baked goods. I've never read A Cold Day in the Sun but I am taking interest because Holland sounds like someone I'd give a hug to.
ReplyDeleteA Cold Day in the sun is a fantastic combination of sports and romance and just plain YA goodness. It was very "feel-good", and I loved it.
DeleteI would be friends with LJ for her baking abilities! Her boy drama would probably drive me batty though. I have Sweetie on my list too! Love that girl!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, the boy drama might have gotten to me, but baked goods would keep me coming into her orbit.
DeleteI haven't read any of these! I did watch To All the Boys and I really like Lara Jean and her sister!
ReplyDeleteGenesis @ Whispering Chapters
The Covey sisters were a pretty awesome group, and the adaptation did them justice.
DeleteThe only one I've read was Sweetie and she does seem like a very sweet girl.
ReplyDeleteShe was sweet, but also strong and brilliant and kind and all sorts of awesome
DeleteI haven't read most of these books, but all of these characters sound so fun! And being friends with Lara Jean would truly be amazing :D All those baked goods would be a perk, too!!
ReplyDeleteIt's always good to have friends, who likes to bake and/or cook, especially if you're like me, and hate doing both.
Deletehaven't read any of these books. off the top of my head, i can't pick one book bestie. i am terrible at memes like these, but i enjoy what you share.
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
I thought it would be harder, than it was. I started looking at my read-shelf, and the characters flooded my memory.
DeleteOoo! Holland is an excellent choice! I wish I would have chosen her!
ReplyDeleteRight! She was amazing! Not perfect, but still amazing.
DeleteI love Lara Jean so much and would feel so lucky to be her friend.
ReplyDeleteI know. I need an LJ in my life.
DeleteNice picks! All totally new to me characters of course! Lol.
ReplyDeleteHere's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
Thanks!
DeleteYes to Jack from Hope and Other Punch Lines! He was my favorite character in that book - so funny, but also so honest.
ReplyDeleteI love when an author spends just as much time crafting a side character as a main character, and that was really shown with how fully developed Jack was
DeleteI almost put Sweetie on my list too. Love her!
ReplyDeleteShe was fabulous! More of her, please.
DeleteI haven't read any of these but I know enough about Laura Jean to know she'd be a great friend to have around!
ReplyDeleteShe was just great friend material.
DeleteWow looks like a pretty good bunch! I only know Lara Jean from the Netflix version of To All the Boys, but these all look great!
ReplyDeleteThe movie did a great job capturing, who LJ was.
DeleteI've not read any of these yet. Looks like I have some great characters to get to know:)
ReplyDeleteI adored them, and it's the characters, who really drive my love of a book
DeleteI can't believe I forgot Sweetie! She is such an awesome character!
ReplyDeleteMenon writes great characters in general. I have really loved them all
DeleteI couldn’t agree more with Jack from Hope and Other Punch Lines! He was an amazing friend. I loved the familiarity between he and Noah and the way he was so welcoming with including Abbi in their friendship.
ReplyDeleteThat's the one thing I love about Buxbaum, she crafts her side characters just as well as her MCs. I felt like every character in this book stood out, but Jack, he was special
DeleteGreat list! Such a fun topic this week.
ReplyDeleteKrystianna @ Downright Dystopian
It was a fun topic!
DeleteI love the qualities you appreciate in characters! I really appreciate loyalty a lot, and a good sense of humor is brilliant. I really want to read Night Music so I am glad to know Oscar is so likeable <3
ReplyDeleteOscar was wonderful!! I just could not resist his charm. I hope you get a chance to meet him
DeleteAphra!!!! I loved We Are the Perfect Girl so much so I'm glad this made your list! Lara Jean would definitely be one of my besties too!
ReplyDeleteBoth were too fabulous not to include.
