The critically acclaimed author of Lily and Dunkin delivers another heartfelt story that will remind readers you never know who needs a friend the most, about two imaginative tweens who help each other find new beginnings.I have been wanting to read a Donna Gephart book since Wendy's raved about one of Gephart's other books. Aside from the recommendation, I have been having a lot of luck with middle grades lately. I think I really like the MG author's handle the issues. They tend to be less preachy for some reason, and I am always more receptive to that approach.
Miles is an anxious boy who loves his family's bowling center even if though he could be killed by a bolt of lightning or a wild animal that escaped from the Philadelphia Zoo on the way there.
Amy is the new girl at school who wishes she didn't have to live above her uncle's funeral home and tries to write her way to her own happily-ever-after.
Then Miles and Amy meet in the most unexpected way . . . and that's when it all begins. . .
I am also in love with the concept of this book. An anxious boy, a new girl with a big imagination, and a bowling alley. I am just thinking of all the possibilities.
What are you waiting on?

It does sound nice, and it occurred to me that I haven't read a middle grade in ages, seems like. I used to review them somewhat regularly, but it's been a while. I should see what's out there...

DeleteI just put this on my TBR--middle grade books in the past few years have been amazing and so much fun to read.
ReplyDeleteThey really have, and I like the way MGs approaches issues too
DeleteOh, this sounds like such a sweet one. I was akind of anxious kid, too, so I feel for Miles. And I had a very active imagination so I can relate to Amy. Hope this one is as good as it sounds!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice they feature characters like these, because I bet there's a bunch of kids out there who could relate.
DeleteI really do love middle grade books, so I need to read more of them. This sounds really good! I think I'd like Miles - being super anxious myself. ;)

I hope it's as cute as the cover.
DeleteIt has been a while since I last read a middle grade novel. This does sound really good. I hope you enjoy it, Sam!
ReplyDeleteI never thought I would be into MGs. My co-bloggers are all huge Percy Jackson fans, and I kept putting them off thinking I was wayyyy to old to read MG, but these authors are just writing phenomenal books, and I really appreciate their messaging.
DeleteI've not read anything by Donna Gephart but this one sounds cute. I love the cover too.
ReplyDeleteI have heard raves about Dunkin and Lily, and the premise sounds great.
DeleteThis sounds adorable! I do think that MG books handle issues really well, and this one is sure to be a hit from the sounds of it.
ReplyDeleteIt really sounds adorable
DeleteI've been loving MG too. I think they are tackling the big issues right now with honesty and empathy. I wish I had all these books when I was young.

They really do have so many meaningful stories for that age group, and I am glad readers have them
DeleteI just love Gephart. She Skyped with my classroom last year on World Read Aloud Day, and she seems like just a lovely person. Plus yeah, I love her books! I'm so glad my enthusiasm has inspired you!
ReplyDeleteThat's so awesome that she spoke with your class. I am really excited to read this book, and I probably wouldn't have found it without you.
DeleteI think they sort of need to be less preachy because although teens have a bit more patience and might read through it, middle grade audiences tend to be more receiving of subtle messages and not ones thrown right at them as they are still looking for challenges in their reading. But I am making huge generalisations in that statement - I hope you get what I mean!
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right about that. Tweens are a tough audience, and they are in that in-between stage where they just rage a lot. It's a fine line you have to walk with them.
